I Died
Fell in a bowl of soup
my head hangs
wet and soggy
spoon on the floor
The coroner removes my head
and stares
at the microwave.........

All Hallows Eve
In the dark of night all alone
Steps behind will chill to the bone
When hair stands on end
No need to pretend
The coroner calls that, "Frisson"...

Artichoke
The shock of the news left him numb.
He asked, "How did my friend succumb?"
The coroner joked,
"Your friend Artie choked,
He's the victim of his chewing gum."...

Wrath
The coroner did not believe.
That that fellow knew how to grieve.
Suspicious suspect.
The man lay lying on the floor.
The coroner deduced once more.
Murder I detect....

Afraid of Panty Raids
There once was a cat, a pretty young maid
Who was deathly afraid of panty raids --
She had a breathing lapse
Then completely collapsed --
The cat coroner found out she'd been spayed...

Heart Throb
Heart Throb
I slurped at the buttery sauce.
It dribbled corner to corner.
I said “Serve it at bed
With fatty pork and bread-
And hide it from the coroner!”

Certainly Not Me
everyone
said he
was always
punctual
said he
never missed
a day of work
said he
would be the
one to count
on but the
coroner
said she
didn't know
his time
of death
but she
hadn't taken
off his watch
if she
would have
would have
found
two
bites
marks...

Expansion Chamber
Fire breathing chamber of metal
Twist the wrist a fuel air mixing kettle
Dump the clutch gear on gears engage
Adrenaline pumping no time for rage
First race fast pace is to the corner
Concentrate hard or face the coroner
Second race pinned to the finish line
I hope the audience here had a great time...

Cry ‘en out
runty Court, corny core
country coon unroot.
Ornery, yet not
your crony too.
Uncute nut
one rut —or
cooter coroner.
Neo coy
Cure concert tune crooner.
Once retro eye toy,
no contour nor couture.
Enter unto none
true outer nurture.
Run or not—
yet outrun no one.

Romance
Coroner, take this blood,
all this vile redness.
Please, cut me slowly,
let me savour these wounds.
Coroner, examine my heart,
not its silent function.
I beg, destroy this brain,
let it not think again.
Coroner, deceive my kin,
let them think me dead.
Please, let me stay here,
living in this morgue.
Coroner, sew me tightly,
I hope for this to scar.
I pray, for beauty's sake,
that I'll stay this young....

Twig Beneath a Redwood Tree
Long ago I had a coroner friend.
Wasn't long before he shared his dark stories...
People passing away in strange ways-in strange places.
Distorted postures-a maggot's buffet.
People going for a bite to eat-never returning...
his confessions never leave me.
I shared my stories with him.
but they paled in comparison to his.
I doubt if he remembers any of them...
Does anybody remember a twig beneath a redwood tree....

Michigan Man, 93, Freezes To Death
Why, the old man froze to death
fingers and toes burning,
a slow, painful death, the coroner
says; the neighbors say they tried,
the city never lies, they will shut off
service of essential services,
and so life goes. Why,
the old man froze to death
huddled in double layers.
He’s not alone this season,
‘tis a freezing season, three
reports this week. I reckon
we’re not civilized enough
to have heat for everyone....

Accident
Brad
Husband
Accident
He fell asleep
While he was driving
We had an argument
I was supposed to with him
They say that he died instantly
The coroner said blunt force trauma
I had to go into the hospital
I refused to believe that he was gone
It was true, I would never see him
If I had only gone with him
He would have stayed wide awake
We'd have been arguing
There was no goodbye
Just a phone call
Accident
Husband
Brad...

Pulling the Trigger
PULLING THE TRIGGER
a centrifugal shot
captivating
officers investigating
knocking on doors
across the street
silence
until a single mother
returns
a siren screams
for two hours
the coroner
appears, placid
neighbors nudged
the mother, of one son,
outside, where oxygen
could not breathe
where a home, once stood
only walls speak
neighbors listen
tenuously

Dying In Bed
THE bed a crime scene of sorts
a passion spilled in sweat
willingly i go - to my death
He comes to me in the night
a sword sharpened by lust
and thrusts it into my soul
Mother, i'm ready to come home
but the line between pain & pleasure
is small compared to the pleasant death
The coroner will say an untimely passing
but my murderous lover knew the timing
each plunge of his knife ever deeper.

Blood Language
When the barrel speaks,
crimson thoughts
are expressed non-verbally
Scarlet tones
perforate the air
with ballistic shrieks
Coroner syntax
are arranged in morgue sentences
of alphabetical autopsies
When the barrel speaks,
violent desires
are sated in silencer reverie
Blue steel fiery emotion
be coldly exclaimed
by stained tongues trigger happy
Solemn whispers
is the universal language
spoken with rigor mortis affinity

The Fix Is In
I'll race you to the corner
Watch me do a wheelie
Want some ABC gum*
Mary is a fraidy-cat...
As we age, inevitably badly
and enter our final phases
The cruel lash of time
contorts these treasured phrases
I'll race you to the coroner
Watch me in my wheelchair
Want some more oxycontin
Mary is a vegetable...
Hate to be so grim
but when the fix is in
All we've left is words to say
'til dementia takes those away
*ABC = already been chewed...

Rhyme
Autopsy of a Glass Girl
Staining the floor with her shards
and slicing the hands of the coroner
the broken doll rests in pieces.
Her etched face glances skywards
her beaded eyes trapped staring into the sun.
“Pushed too far,” the coroner says.
Porcelain women weep at the side of the autopsy table.
“Bury the fragments,” the coroner says, the coroner says.
His words move on
but the mourners never will.
He moves on to the next case
but the mourners never will.
He moves on.
But the mourners never will....
