Anything Goes

Perhaps he's crackers
to embrace glitz
(to paraphrase Irving Berlin)
'Putin on the Ritz'
tho'
'Sometimes something is better than nothing'
went the writing on the wall
yet
'Too much of nothing'
(wrote the Zimmerman)
is really no good at all
and
'Everything comes to those who wait'
an optimist put in prose
but
Cole Porter said it best
when he wrote, 'Anything Goes'

His heart was black as coal a cantankerous soul
So cruel and so unkind
He was ever so clever but never would ever
Reveal what's on his mind

It was commonly known was a cad fully grown
And a savage from birth
His only decision and only one vision
Was to ravage the Earth

Then one night in a dream the most devilish scheme
Ever devised by man
On a day in December a day we'd remember
He hatched his evil plan

With his hatred alive he then took a long drive
Down to the hotel Ritz
Soon his plan implemented a bomb he invented
That would blow it to bits

As a matter of fact he thought the hotel was packed
But it was empty instead
By the light of the moon the bomb blew up way too soon
And brought it down on his head

The news got the story it was ever so gory
But we all know the rest
No longer no trouble lied dead in the rubble
The hotels only guest

Premium MemberPutin On the Ritz

Putin on the ritz -
He’s crackers,
Without pizzazz,
the cheese.

Without Putin -
Ukranians ease,
Seize the day,
Say, “Yes, please,” -
to better reality.

Baloney and Ritz

artisan bread sliced
	I baked on a stone
in a oven medium
	on a warm summer day

placed on a stoneware platter white
on a table of butcher block
with the condiments I’d need
	to prepare my noon feast

from the deli bought
	baloney fresh as can be
on a platter laid out
	slices fresh and round

to complement these
	from the grocery I got
a tin of bright red
	with Ritz crackers filled

with a butter knife spread
	mayo pure and white
mustard nice and brown
	tart as I like

round slices I did spread
	upon the white bread
and covered them all
	with crackers mirroring them

rebellion did raise
	it’s little ugly head
and swiss slices square
	on them I did spread

a second bread slice
	to top it all off
to complete my noon feast
	now ready to eat

Premium MemberGlitz Ritz Splits Blitz Mitts

If you had a little glitz
You and I could do the splits,
In front of the Hotel Ritz
Did you just call me a ditz?

Come here and put up your mitts.
Do not care if Mom has fits.
Come and show me all your grits.
I will fight you with my wits.

Oh no, do not blame your blitz.
Up to you to do the splits.
Unless you want lots of hits
Meet me at the Hotel Ritz.

Cut me up in little bits?
Witnesses will laugh with spits.
Did you just call me a ditz?
Come here and put up your mitts.

Come on grandma, use your wits.
Kidding truly little ditz.
Cannot make Mom have such fits
And there is no Hotel Ritz

Puttin On the Ritz

Kevin Solomon 9/9/2015

The Lion and the Crown
Cobalt blue goblet and the spangled gown
Black tie and high browns
Puttin on the Ritz
Flappers dancing the Charleston
Jazz by Count Basie and Duke Ellington
Crazy dance moves like the Black Bottom, the Shimmy and the Turkey Trot
And the Cake Walk
The Tango and the Bunny Hop
The Fox Trot and the Lindy Hop
Roaring cars filling the crowded streets
Zoot suits and reap pleats
Wide leg Oxford Bags and cuffed trousers
Waistcoats, suspenders, bow-ties and knickerbockers
Ladies wearing make-up, bobbed hair, short fringed skirts and drinking
Bright colored sweaters, patent-leather hair, feather head bands and smoking
The glitz of New York
Not the grime of Detroit
Superstars
Forgetting who their real friends are
Blinded by the glitter and gleam
Forgetting you are only a human being
Going where Harlem flits
No guts no grits
The fancy rich and famous showing their glitz
Forget about the misfits
And come on down to the Ritz

Putting on the Ritz

Those weird faces
below glamorous make up,
The enormous laughs
under those debts,
Show off to whom
lesser privileged than you?
As those affluents
will never look at you !

Luxury of the motels
and wine in pubs,
Those night lusts
and hefty gifts,
Moving in bigger cars
owning king sized houses,
Best of attire
embellished in sapphire,
False faces of ritz
truth dumped deep within.

Whence our kids
crave for foods,
And poor naked in streets
are covered only in mist,
Longing for a meal
as hunger eats mankind.

Why can't we be modest
to accept in dignity,
When at the lounge we stand,
Counting our guests
wishing there was a miss,
Showing liberty at heart
that weeps on money shed,
Hard earnings wasted
on an imitation game,
Pocketed inside out ersatz,
Putting on the Ritz !

Puttin On the Ritz

The highest of the class with lots of flowing cash,
with gorgeous eveningball gowns and tuxes with the sash.
They come to drink and dance the night away,
And no one goes home till they see the light of day.

The expensive luxurious cars that come and go,
traveling miles from a distance to get to the show.
The men watch and admire the women on the sly,
as the ladies sashay across the room to catch a wondering eye.

The horns start to blowin and the base gets to bumpin,
And shortly after that this joint starts to jumpin.
The men grab the ladies hands and lead them to the stage,
and before you know it everyone's dancing up the latest rage.

The ladies stay cute and the men stay cool,
never lose your cool that's the golden rule.
Dancing up a storm all to the latest hits,
Now that's what's known as Puttin On The Ritz.

Putting On the Ritz

Tip- tap-tipetty to!
Swing downtown now,
Why feel so blue?
The girls are dancing high kicks phew!
Leave your top hat on the pew,
Swing-swing-sing-a-song
Let them know that you belong!
Rhythm child, one-two- three- four,
If your’e cool you’ll pass the door,
To skip and dance and drink champagne,
Don’t hold back enjoy the game!
Ginger, Fred they’ll all be there
Ostrich feathers in their hair,
At the Cotton Club…one-two-three-four
Yes the Cotton Club... Oh give me more!

Take it away Mr Bumby!...trombone shrills,
Piano spills, the notes of fifty tapping spats,
Sounds of laughter, syncopated fits..let- it- go
We’re puttin on the Ritz!

Puttin On the Ritz

Had an invite to a ball in Lake Tahoe
at the Ritz Carlton what a surprise.
To celebrate in true old fashioned style
opened a door couldn’t believe my eyes

The ballroom was all of a glitter
with walls of silk and panels of wood
Had brought in chandeliers shining like diamonds
the backdrop of Martis Valley looking good.

One whole wall was made of glass
showing a view nearly too much to bare.
I heard the sound of more guests
turned round, I couldn’t help but stare.

Here were ladies dressed in their finery
the gents in tuxedos and white starched shirts.
They gracefully walked to their tables
whilst the band tuned up ready to start.

What a night of pleasure,
we waltzed ‘til our feet were sore
Then we gathered the strength for a foxtrot,
we danced and danced even more.

Fireworks were set off in the gardens
Spiralling high in the night air
The sparkle of these were out dimmed
By the light in the eyes of folks here.

What a way to remember the old days
all dressed up, in a ballroom like this,
The last waltz is played, looked around me
We all had enjoyed Puttin on the Ritz.

Premium MemberPuttin' On the Ritz

Understated, that's the way
we put on the Ritz in country towns.
Flashing bellies, no no no.
We do the Ritz in our own way.

It's glamorous, for sure
in country towns -
but open wallets, no no no...
Not the way at all.

Our girls have stick-on hair,
but not the blue type, no no no.
They dance and sing the whole night long,
but it's the Ritz sans raz-MA-taz.

For sure, they leave their ma's at home,
for they don't - no no no.
The ma's watch Fred Astaire instead,
and do a jig before their bed.

"Razzmatazz" has two groups of "z", but I put
them as one each time, as it gives it too heavy
a tone otherwise.

'Ritz Tower, Night' 1920's Painted by Georgia O'Keefe

They closed the day behind them, and scurried to the hive
Inside a honeycomb of cells, a filing cabinet filled of lives
The night in black and blue enshrouds the city's tallest mast
As evening beckoned heads to rest, with yellow window glass
That overlooks the narrow streets, from a tower of the past
