grieving sad loss of summer
it is time of greatest joy
when old bones no longer ache
and eyes are blessed with colour
to smell crisp newly mown grass
after warm summer shower
herbaceous border delights
hollyhocks reached perfection
midnight, smell the torpid air
wisteria in moonlight
salamander on old walls
nightlight with aura sheds glow
drinking strong morning coffee
wide eyes take in this beauty
never to be forgotten
image held close to my heart

Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare's town
Where shades of the past are present each day
in daub and wattle homes there can be found
Medieval moments that are at play.
Tragedies staged with death quite violent
In his writing of revenge and torment
Shakespeare lies buried his quill now silent
He wrote of passion and evil portent.
On cobbled street where Tudor shoe did tread
Walk in the footsteps of the sonneteer
His shadow alive although bard is dead
Empathic souls adjust to yesteryear.
Enduring atmosphere Shakespeare's past
Tangible moment he holds us steadfast.

I
What does it mean if vain thoughts rise?
Long-buried people, events, may arise
Suddenly, even after forgiving an ex (wife)
II
Does it mean forgiveness is not?
I don't think so; perhaps quick fix was sought
Or new partner has connections to ones that fought (u)
III
Talking is the only way, the searing way
To expose little, un-needed lies, so u can say
Little about mistakes (sins?) that dont go away
IV
Hear how your ongoing discourse dishonor "now" relations
So "suddenly" is no surprise, respect his/ her feelings
And double standards decree: what if it happens to you?
Finally, written apologiesv(re-read) quell old emotions

you meet someone
you haven't seen for decades
what do you talk about
where do you start
right where you left off
all those years ago
if it's an old high school chum
you might recall teachers
or school plays or sports teams
if it's a college roommate
you'll probably relive a few of those
drunken bashes that you'd be ashamed
to talk about with anyone else
if it was on your first job
you'll laugh at what eager beavers
you both were, pedal to the medal
to hit those targets, to please the boss
whatever it took to move up another notch
but what if 'it' is 'a she,' an old flame of yours
an affair whose embers still burn deep in your soul

Couldn’t leave yet,
One of them that I’d met
Moaning and screaming,
It feels like they’re dreaming.
Needed again,
Glad to give a refrain
But I’m now nearly eighty,
Active still though, matey.
Couldn’t say no,
Knocked up, asked not to go,
Help this doc has displayed,
Over this whole charade.
Me retired so I’ll roam
Exhausted, I want home!

Memories surface,a requiem of
sounds,heaving emotions realign,
words recalled speak volume from
deep within , and live again on a trail
of nows then wash nostalgia’s face
with random spontaneity from
the unconscious mind.The house
full of yesterdays,books that filled
wet Wednesdays,cross-stitched hours
upon the wall.Eclectic collected
moments,sentiments,priceless,unique
and irreplaceable,this smell of love
percolating into endless tomorrows.

~ Faces recalled ~
A tear slipped down my cheek
into my heart
Good friends from whom
I've split apart
A downward gaze
a moment's reflection
Faces recalled
with teardrop's affection

Escaping into verse,
the base of the tower rumbled,
the ground beneath was shaken
with new cracks inside its walls
Escaping into verse,
all towering deception crumbled,
as the self-anointed jumped and fell
landing prostrate and so small
Escaping into verse,
the mime shouted out enabled,
his silent thunder raining down
with a message now to scald
Escaping into verse,
a new steeple built and gabled
its bell to ring a lyric toll
—new life to those recalled

In my bed, memory took fancied flight,
When I met with dear friends the other night.
Some Loved ones and Folks I’d known so well,
Stopped by to visit. Numbers more than I could tell!
Some of those seen, had long been away,
While others, were met only yesterday.
But all were welcome; they made me glad,
Though now I’ve wakened, I’m left feeling sad.
For they were Folks, of whom I’d been very fond.
Long since left for a place which lies far beyond.
All without exception, have become a vital part
Of precious moments, kept stored within my heart.
Though dreams seldom make sense - for it is their way,
It’s when thinking on them, in the cold light of day,
That I recall another time and another place,
Bringing a brief seen smile to lighten my face!
As I grow older, dreams bring their own reward,
While their very substance no longer seems untoward.
When comes that fateful day - as such that Fate will deem,
Perhaps I too, will play my part in someone’s dream?

Tenderly she picked the pink flower
day dreaming of the first flower given
wandering over to the bedecked bower
she dreamily looked at the garden
Memories of happy times came flooding in
the places they had visited together
Roma where they bathed in Turkish basins
Athens, they were victims of a flasher
Paris is the city of love and romance
here they had dallied playing some love games
time they spent alone in a loving trance
their love for each other fueled by flames
Love had bound them for all eternity
memories founded on a dynasty

RED SEA RECALLED
Perim squints in sun without relief
Through its narrow windows
Towards the mirage
Of Socotra’s pearled reef
Red and shallow sea floor
With coral islets shimmering
And rainbows of fish
Near its dusty rock shores
Crossed by the Tropic*
Crossed by dhows
Crossed by Moses
Crossroads geographic and historic
Its waters stream warm
Through the gate of tears *
A tideless desert sea
Caught in a sand storm
...............................................................................................
NOTES
Tropic of Cancer crosses the Red Sea’s mid-section.
Bab el Mandeb means Gate of Tears.
Perim and Socotra are islands in the region.

The number of us children growing up was eight.
Each Thursday night was special, for our Dad got paid,
and we would eagerly and hungrily await
his bringing Henry’s fries and burgers home. Hurray!
We weren’t allowed to pick and choose; we had to take
two burgers each with “everything” and one bag of fries.
While we grabbed our own allotment, happy to partake,
Jenny scraped off from her burgers -onions she despised!
Dori chewed so slowly, from her we all would steal.
The baby, Theadora, just sat there and played
with her food. I was strange and always made this deal:
Both my burgers for two brothers’ French fries I would trade.
And so the number of my French fries always came to three.
Even with no burgers, I loved each Thursday night.
for the Henry’s fast food and time with family.
Oh, to go back to those days with loved ones in my sight!
*Henry's Hamburgers was the name of a fast food place in my hometown

LAUGHTER RECALLED
She gives her smiles and laughter
And long the gift my spirit feels,
As wedding bells’ silver peals
Are softly felt hereafter.
