Book of Matches and Phone Number
If you put a
book of matches and
your phone number on a
slip of
cardboard (lined and sickly yellow) on
your mantelshelf in relation to
each other they’ll
mull over the
best way to
stop forever the
fierce growl of
animals. And too
butcher glove stench
will go.
The phone number of death we dial,
When we near a poisoned phial
To rashly swallow its content,
And actualize a suicidal intent:
Our breathing soon in wheezes,
What the cemetery richly pleases,
A gripping of our tummies in feeble resistance
Every offered revival, vain assistance
Others to start rehearsing their goodbye
To us on a wished hearse lie
And the same phone number we try,
As we enrage folks that skin fry
Before advancing cops of pity dry
And into claims of being surrounded not pry
To pick their life sentence with smiles wry…
Now that I’ve said so I shan’t cry.

I found your phone number today.
Guess you thought I've thrown it away.
Guess I let other things get in the way.
So many times,
thoughts of you are on my mine.
Thousands of times,
I've asked myself, "Why?"
only to hear myself, sigh.
Million and one tears I've cried,
when I should of swallowed my pride.
When all I had to do,
was pick up the phone and call you.
Guess you think I've thrown you away,
guess I let other things stand in the way.
If only you knew, you're here in my heart to stay.
Along with your memories,
that will never set me free.
I found your phone number today,
I could never throw it away.
I'm thinking of giving you a call,
because after all,
I don't want another day to go by
without hearing your charming voice, say, "Hi"

I think it’s funny when in the thrift store I see
An Alcoholics Anonymous handbook donated to charity
With the former owner’s full name on the front, page sides, and spine
And even a return address label on the front page inside,
So much for anonymity!
I smile and think, “How cute!”
But I guess if you were in a room where everyone has the same book as you do
You have to label yours clearly to avoid it getting confused
With those of others who have highlighted different passages than you.
So as I take donations at the thrift store door I think, “Here’s another one!”
And if this one has an address label, too, I may just for kicks and giggles send the former owner a postcard saying, “Thank you for the donation . . .
How are you? Still on the wagon?”
So I peer inside
Let’s see . . .
Hey wait – that name - and phone number- is mine!!
After thinking on it, it’s possible that I donated it a couple years ago
And someone bought it, even with my name on it, then they, too, let it go.
For better or worse those memories we throw out always resurface
Hopefully in time to help us realize we are all far from perfect.
