A DOG'S LIFE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I reign as king in a sovereignty supreme.
I sit by your side gazing, the world whizzing by.
From a rolled down window, a kaleidoscope of colors mesmerize.
My ears flapping wildly, a joyful delight.
The rush of air, a thrill to my canine soul.
As we speed along, the highway our open road.
The engine purrs, a tranquil hum.
The sun beats down, a warm embrace.
The miles fly by, like autumn leaves dancing down a street.
I feel alive in this wild, open space.
The scent of freedom, a fragrance so sweet.
The thrill of adventure, a canine story to tell.
My tail wags freely, a happy beat.
The wind in my fur, a soothing caress.
Surely this canine has been blessed.
The sun begins to set, a fiery glow.
The stars appear, a twinkling show.
The engine slows, a gentle ease.
Our journey's come to an end.
I snuggle close, a contented sigh.
For it's a dog's life, and I am hypnotized.
Master, my eyes now have cataracts,
my bones ache and stiffen when I rise,
I cannot chase squirrels like I used to,
nor fetch a tennis ball the way I did
as a pup,
but I love living with my family,
and the gentle pats on my head.
Though the long walks have shortened,
and there's gray fur on my muzzle,
I enjoy napping more during the day.
Master, thank you for taking me to
the vet,
for my health and comfort.
The sun filters through the window warmly,
as I recall seeing the children grow up,
I have the dignity of an elder dog,
blessed by God to be with my kind
human companions,
who adopted me from an animal shelter. ~
Relaxed and warm I'm feeling
under this warm blanket,
I can sleep out from the cold.
Sometimes I wonder
if others are so lucky,
I guess many don't,
then I get upset about my luck.
A hurting winter is here.
I wish it didn't hurt so much
for the ones that don't have a blanket to sleep under.
I wish the snow fell everywhere to fill dry fountains,
to keep happy every child
making angels on the snow.
Lara I am, a humble dog
with big wishes in these difficoult times.
I don't play a balalaika,
but I can play the sound
of every mind when is knocked down or when is above the moon.
I am Lara, a dog that feels
every second of your life,
I am the one that I am,
always there for you.
A woman on her daily walk was serenaded by
a cardinal, a blue jay, and a Carolina wren—
or so she thought. Imagine how surprised she would have been
to learn it was I, a mockingbird perched on a limb up high.
I can make you think you hear a car horn or an alarm,
a barking dog, or a piano. Year-round, day or night,
I perform many charming songs, to listeners’ delight,
but I’ll attack if I think man or creature means me harm.
I am wildly popular, along with being versatile.
I am the designated state bird in five Southern states.*
Those living in the area know that in the forest waits
a concert by performers that are sure to make them smile.
Wild, old dog singing everyday
It does not have a holiday
Singing songs about other's glow
Like, it does not have gleam to show
It sings on dark and stormy night
It always sings when day is bright
It sings to halt how others shine
It's drowsed on other's own fine wine
It chatters like an old, old goat
Instead of rowing its own boat
Feels bad when pushy dogs succeed
Just like envy is its own feed
But comes a one dog with wild dream
It does not care about the scream
It only cares about its catch
That one day, its hard works will hatch
I love to tease and tear around your yard,
while happily chattering and chirping away.
I enjoy searching for acorns and other nuts,
and stuffing my cheeks full while I run and play.
I sometimes find a rare delicacy in your yard,
yummy tulip bulbs and fresh ornamental flowers.
I recently ate your huge orange hibiscus bloom,
and hope you add more, as your garden has room.
I have several shared living dens in your backyard,
and my family loves the perennial garden the best.
We love to hide among the decorative gnomes,
while chirping and teasing your huge dog on guard.
I love to tease the neighbor’s cat, chirping when he appears,
and laughing at him, as I safely scurry back under your fence.
I continue keeping busy visiting your feeders to steal seeds,
feasting and storing while preparing for my winter needs.
A park bench sits empty
Dawn dew dappled
An unseen shiver
Envious of the shaking dog
Senses a loneliness
Hinted at by Winter’s chill
Passersby now scurry
Heads down, breath steaming
The squirrels will no longer come
Nor the pigeons
Cold winds will scourge the trees
Denude them of leaf and bird.
The bench imagines the dew drops
To be its farewell tears.
In the old dark coal mine, brought cold feeling.
It was underground and very dangerous and hard work.
Wearing dark clothes, leather boots, and canvas hat
With a leather brim with metal lamp brackets to hang off a light.
My owner would carry me on his shoulder
When he walked into the tunnels of the mine.
He would hold me firmly with both hands.
Forcing hard with his body, would push my blade into the hard ground,
Rocked my handle back and forth to loosen the ground to get to the coal.
He came out dust covered black with me on his shoulder
All wore out needing to be sharpen for the next day.
I pondered about winter; it would come, and snow would fall.
He'd get me out of the shed, cold chill I would be to the touch,
And shovel the soft fallen snow of the sidewalk.
Years have passed and also my owner.
Now I hang of the wall with my blade painted.
His daughter in tribute, painted a winter scene.
An endless breadth curtain of a blue sky
As it closes the sun's view going down.
Patches of snow on the ground and bare limbs on the trees
My owner walks down a path with his dog.
As he had walked that path so many times.
As pet dog in the Tropics
Blessed am I by God to enjoy life
Clothed with two seasons:
Dry or summer months, and wet or rainy days…
Exposed to this goodness
Freely I’m exempted from Winter blight
Grief of cold weather I haven’t experienced
Happy always for great adventure…
I wish you well, fellow puppies, in the Northern Hemisphere
Just bear in mind that “Winter is not forever”
Kindness of the Sovereign has planned it so
Live with your climate by the grace of the Almighty…
Maximize adventures that Winter offers
Never lose hope* since another season is near
Opening avenues for greater pursuits
Press on still, and grow to be your owners’ pride...
Quietly wait for your time to scamper outside with delight
Ready yourselves to behold blooming wonders
Stay serene while snuggling in your comfort zones
Temperature will soon tell that now is Spring time!
*Psalm 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
I love being bouncy, being green, being fun!
I jump and I hop, and I dance all around.
Being chased by children from two to a hundred and one.
I am the happiest tennis ball, easily found.
I have a sweet squeak when I hit the concrete.
There are squeals of laughter as I am being chased.
A dog has me in her mouth, so I give a quick squeak.
Hoping she will spare me, giving a lot of grace.
I am bouncing now, and excited. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce.
I am enthusiastic about being me in rain, wind, black ice and snow.
I would like a little drink of water, but I do not whine or flounce.
This is the best life I have ever had, for sure. I love it so!
From a cat's perspective ...
I got a little cat brain
And it’s driving dogs insane
They say dogs are smarter
That they try a little harder
But I really don’t know
Though I think it’s all for show
Dogs aren’t man’s best friend
When the cat fun never ends!
From a dog's perspective …
I’ve got a big dog brain
And it’s driving cats insane
Cats know dogs are smarter
Dogs work a whole lot harder
Cat’s are fun? No way!
They just sleep away the day
Dogs are man’s best friend
On your dog you can depend!
I might feel stuck, unable to escape, waiting to die,
But I know that it is not you, holding me still.
Sand in the hourglass flows over my eyes,
Not yet buried, just assumed to fulfill.
The strength of your love takes my pain away,
As it gets harder for me to breathe.
Always being good, making sure I obey,
Alas, my stay was not meant to be.
As my tail stops wagging,
My heart stops beating,
No more life,
Nothing left,
Only thoughts as bright as the dawn
Helping my spirit, not live
But for yours to carry on.
I love being man's best friend, but I'm more than just a friend,
I'm family all the way to the end.
I'm affectionate, loving, and also content, the time spent with me.
My unwavering devotion and loyalty for you, my master.
A devotion to help you live a life full of joy.
I walk and investigate by sniffing the grass, fence,
and underneath the trees when you take me for our walks in the park.
You trust me to stay close, but my attention is caught so easily
when I see a squirrel out gathering nuts.
I run after it as it taunts me by imitating my bark,
then runs up the tree.
There on top just far enough that I cannot reach,
it looks down at me and laughs.
At the end of the day, you pat my head, and give me a belly rub,
and I nestle close to keep you safe.
You have to add kibble and mice and things that have fur,
This was added by my cat friend, Mrs. Not So Demure.
And we have to have feathers, don’t forget that!
This was said by her persnickety friend, Mr. All About Cat.
I am a dog, and do not take my orders from the like.
I ran down the street and chased a boy on a bike.
I would add a bone to my poem, and something to chew.
Yes, my poem would have something fun to bite my teeth into.
A skunk came out of nowhere and gave me a flash.
My eyes are now all watery, and the stench is so brash!
I cannot see the paper, so cannot write anything at all.
I guess I’ll leave it to the cats; this skunk sure had some gall!
Thank you for being there, dear friend, dear one.
Thank you for holding the giant dog on your uplift.
I am sorry about his weight, but we have to feed him.
Thank you for not breaking yet, I feel you will eventually.
But for now, you are perfect for this big galoot and me.
We love sitting on you to play word games or to draw.
We are keeping our paints and glitter glues in the studio.
So you can breathe easy about that unfounded fear.
We love it when you soak up the sunrays from the window.
When you are toasty warm and cushy when we sit.
You are an amazing friend, and we love you – the dog and me.
Thank you for being there, dear friend, dear one.
