Eye twinkle, greeting dimple,
An elegant yet humble style!

More nutritious than food simple,
Your smile is fuel for a mile!
Warming hearts by friendly heat,
Shelter great, more than a mere temple,
Comforting Tom, Koneh & All as a tropic isle!

Brings joy ample,

Premium MemberDo You Like it Raw?

So how do you like your sushi
just sashimi on a plate?

or do you prefer it wrapped in nori?
decorated with microgreens and eggs?

And is there wasabi?
that heat to the tongue?
just a dash or a dab?
Does it make your nose run?

Do you dip in soy?
or is it the modern aminos?
without that salty it seems a bit drab....

Do you like your fish as an appetizer to your meal
or can it be the main course?

Do you want a bit of surf and turf
alternating between beef and fish
culinary exertion almost unreal?

Start with seaweed salad, edamame or just some simple hot green tea?

And is it chopsticks or handrolls?
or do you eat with your hands?
Are there other accompanying tricks?

I long to hear of your distinguishing traits
as you tempt me with your stories and wit

So tell me your tales of sushi
and I will tell you mine

And then perhaps we shall have some saki
and find another way to pass the time

Yeah... I am a bit salty today

Pedigree Cuisine

Perhaps for dinner you might try
A steak and veggie plate
Or some chicken wrapped in nori,
Such a treat to masticate!

At some eateries, the menus
Are creative as food gets,
Which is really a surprise because
The customers are pets.

San Francisco’s restaurant “Dogue”
And Manhattan’s “Judy Z’s”
Offer rawhide bones and cupcakes,
All with canine tastes to please.

Though I understand that owners
Love their dogs, I must admit
Fancy dog meals in a restaurant
Just seems inappropriate.

But never shirk you did, never asked for a Bid,
Never also, we would not, you be Rid,

The Rob, Brave Knave, yet 'neath a shore table Hid,

Piano Notes

Piano notes when players come to play.
So sweetly on the keys, it pleases me.
A few songs that I can teach some day.
Maybe to Wyland or Tyler who can today.

I need to learn more to open my free
Talent I had as a small child. Played
Duets with my best friend Nori for my
Dad, who listened with his open ears.

Heart and soul, his favorite to hear.
When the muse comes back around,
I'll start over again to learn for a while.
That piano smoked up with my brother.

Larry bought me another, but we gave
It to my grandson, Wyland - who played
One Christmas Eve. I listened intently.
He played ever so softly and gently.

Nori, Susan and Debbie

Met Nori on a bus on trip with
The Girl Rangers - Boy Scouts.
She was a year ahead, nothing said.
She didn't fit in, neither did I.
We became buddies, thirteen years.
We drank, smoked, got higher in rank.
My prize was being most overlooked.
One trip for being far from camp.
We were thick as thieves, friends.
She loved my dad, as I loved Susan's
Mother, both alcoholics. Susan was
Another friend, but not as close.
My brother's friend was Phil, Susan's
Brother. My third friend was Debbie.
Her mother took me under her wing.
Nori was the closest. She helped me
Leave on my journey at seventeen,
And again at twenty-seven. My dad
Kept in touch, I did not. She didn't
Change after children, I did. Her
Childen were almost same age as mine.
I've tried now to find her with no luck.

Domo Arigato

When you’re 4
Leaving a city
Age 8
Unfortunate
Many events
You forget.
Spoke fluent Japanese,
Phrases
Some words
Counting
Still do.
Cherry blossoms
Thin rice paper doors
Friends
School
Black crows
Flashbacks still view.
Kimonos
Tatami floors
Koi fish
Back then,
Looked different
And new.
Rice crackers
Nori
Dried fish
Delightful snacks
To eat,
“Stop eating that garbage”
Mom yelled
“Throw it away, close the lid!”
Many years, cities later,
Enjoying sesame flavored Jellyfish
Re-living Tokyo memories
Only in wishful dream.

Premium MemberThe Sounds of Korea-W

I hear the familiar sounds of Korea,
Of the crowing of roosters in the morning,
Of the fields, streams and marketplaces.
The tunes of shamanistic music band
The swirling of fire-lit cans of Jwibul nori,
The soup boiling sounds in a huge pot,
A crisp “tak, tak” sound of soybean burning
And the crackling sounds of dry branches.
Chanting at planting & threshing paddies
The singing of Hori and Gyeori songs
The striking of the bronze bell of Sangwonsa
Chanting-Beompae to Daeung Amitabh.

In the far-flung village of Sangyu
The flames of the daljips in the rice fields
Soars high in the sky on Jeongwol Daeboreum
Higher the flames, the greater is the harvest
Promising bounteous year and good health.
People dance Pansori at the tunes of Nongak
A feast is being prepared there,
The full moon catches people’s prayers
And spreads it to the high heaven.

Jwibul nori’-Mice burning game is on
Somewhere yet in another village.
The traditional burning of the rice paddies
To chase away the mice from the fields.
With crackling sounds of fireworks,
Warming and fertilizing the frozen fields.
