Premium MemberBecoming Me

Music came out of my fingers
made me dance all over the wall
My parents were askance
For I was a newborn from a small town

I was tapping my fingers on my highchair tray at one
Loving the feeling of playing my own trombone or drum
I was a musician, so they called me Table Top Joe
It was not even my name, but that’s how I evolved

Kindergarten teacher was Miss Alyson, who was pretty and quick
She let my fingers play the piano as a reward if I did my work
Work in kindergarten? That is crazy I told myself. And it was.

Every day at school was a waste of time.
How did it get me closer to fame?
Fortune?
My destiny?

I played the game as long as I could
Then I ran away to become the real me.
A musician who drums on everything he can reach.
Tabletop Joe!

Mathematics

Mathematics teacher can be romantic
and some people can be happy of his "her" romance.
When he "she" takes a piece of chalk to execute
his "her" teaching job, most people shout
"why these complicated calculations,
where will we go with these mathematics?"
it is like he "she" broke the romantic mood
with mathematics subject.
some people can think that poetry finds roots
in romance because majority people love
romantic poems.
a mathematics teacher can sing and dance
if he "she" knows more about the connection
of poetry with music.

Some calculations can be hard to solve sometimes.
Let us look in this mathematics in future marriage.
When he will marry her , they will become one.
No one will be able to divide them
But only death that will separate them.

My Wooden Casket With Strings

One might call it a 'guitar',
But, sadly, I have to call it my wooden casket with strings,
No offence to the instrument,
Its not that bad of one really,
It's just something with me,
A personal grudge,
I have been playing it for more than 3 years now,
I am not great at it,
HECK I am not even good at it!
I have an older brother, also plays guitar,
Better than me in every way possible,
Because he enjoys it, I don't!
A twin sister, a better pianist and singer,
Only because she enjoys it, I don't!
My family hired a guitar teacher, recently
And now it is too much work!
I used to love music,
Before being given this casket I hate to play!
I am just in 7th grade, but this thing comes and ruins my day!
Well, for now, I have this machine of doom,
My only wooden casket with some strings

My foreign music teacher my loins disturb,
her grammar poor but her Brazilian superb.
       She yelled “Ay, Caramba!
       Do you wanna samba?”
I do love to dance but no Miss, wrong verb!

Premium MemberPresentation Is Everything

Some say presentation is everything and more
That’s certainly important if selling is your game
I learned that while managing a piano store.

Sponsoring concerts with musicians of fame,
Selling the idea that a buyer can learn how to play
That’s certainly important if selling is your game.

We demonstrated easy piano tunes every day
Teaching buyers simple tunes anyone can learn
Selling the idea that a buyer can learn how to play.

And it is true, anyone can memorize a pattern,
Playing an uncomplicated melody with satisfaction
Teaching buyers simple tunes anyone can learn.

To say anyone can play well merits a retraction
For only the truly gifted can learn to play well
Playing an uncomplicated melody with satisfaction.

Playing a few simple ditties is certainly swell
Some say presentation is everything and more
For only the truly gifted can learn to play well
I learned that while managing a piano store.

Premium MemberWe Plan To Get Kicked Out of Music

The art substitute teacher kicked ten of the seventeen sixth graders out.
The principal was beside herself. She brought four of them to me.
Could you play a game with them or something?
These four were not kicked out.
They are usually such clowns, the teacher didn’t even “try them” with a sub.

I played three or four games with them. We had a lot of fun.
So much fun they brought me two more sixth graders.
During this game playing one of them informed me of this:
“We plan to get kicked out of music on Friday so we can come back.”

Friday might be a problem. We are using the library today.
Because the librarian only comes on Thursday and Friday.
Obviously, we cannot use it on these days.
My office only fits about two people, me and a pencil.
I rack my brain trying to figure out how I can fix this.

Miss Ruth

A God-honored teacher, Miss Ruth Vance
His gift to our town, His circumstance.
No replacing her bulging tote bag -
It was priceless, minus the Gucci tag."

and now the rest of the story....

Teacher extraordinaire, Miss Ruth Vance
taught eighth graders about life, perchance.
From first grade to twelfth, school musician.
Music was her primary mission.

For Halloween, she'd parade the whole school
round and round the gym! What a jewel!
Her eighth graders always danced the May Pole.
Pomp and Circumstance, our seniors' goal.

Christmas plays displayed her special niche;
school choirs of all ages sang without a hitch.
Our Mary Poppins with overstuffed school bag -
Miss Ruth, musician, teacher and wag.

Sundays at noon, she played the town postlude
doors thrown wide open, all ears were glued...
Baptists, Methodists going home from church
heard Miss Ruth, at her Presbyterian perch.

~ A Chopin Prelude ~

A young lass by mistake downed a Quaalude
Removed her clothes, played a Chopin prelude
   Male teacher at her peeked
Then she let out a shriek
"It's not lesson time ~ Are you ever rude!"

A Piano In My Backyard

There is a piano in my backyard,
it plays musical water to my ears,
a waterfall cascades from it old keys
into a pond with so much ease.

It came with the house and was a feature,
the real estate person said It was unique,
a piano teacher owned it at one time,
she gave lessons to children in her prime.

When I sit in the evening I am entertained
by the piano and its endless watery show
as it plays an aquatic number for me to enjoy,
pretending I am a guest at the Hotel Savoy.

Premium MemberLearn Guitar My Son

There was I in my early twenties
sitting bored on a Sunday afternoon
mu mum suggested, get a hobby
but being a loner was well out of tune

My mind was blank till mum said
learn guitar, my son, well maybe
so I bought an acoustic guitar
then got lessons to learn my key

As I started learning some real tunes
it seemed I should've begun while a teen
but some progress I was actually making
after a year thought what might have been

So gave it up, wonder why?
probably not dedicated far enough
but now really appreciate class
guitarists playing real splendid stuff

My experiences make one appreciate
the skilful play of these in master class
like Bream, Williams, Romero and the like
inspiration they do bring, pray not to pass

(I recall here my early 20s and making effort to learn guitar which was not to be but learn to appreciate those who could especially in the classical field.)

Premium MemberIn the Key of Life

Music is a window to the world
   a portal to our hearts
In its key of life, in its ebb and flow
   there beats the finest art

Inspiration for this poem flowed from
the last lines of Sunshine Smiles' poem,
'My Teacher and Professor,' posted on

Premium MemberThe Instrument

My heart is a drum,
My hands are symbols,
I have a voice like a cat
And people use thimbles.

They plug up their ears
And over the years,
All of my peers have…
Purchased from Sears.

I think I have learned,
That music is lovely,
I listen and hum,
I play on above-ly…

What does that mean, you may ask?

In heavens own orchestra,
I will be correct and on task.
The Master knows my talents
And there is no mask.

His Glory in all things,
His Grace Renown.
I wish I could play better,
If only for now.

Premium MemberThey Said I Did Not Have To Know Music

A spider a day keeps the apple away.
A spider a day makes the day oh so gray!
A spider a day, so it must be almost May!
At the top of our lungs now, everybody sing.

Spider! Spider! Spider!
Another teacher runs in. What are you doing?
Teaching them a new song.
Who are you?

I am a substitute teacher who kept trying not to take this job.
Why did you take it? They told me I did not have to know music
to be the music teacher today.

Stern look now. Where are the lesson plans?
I hand them over.
It says play this on the piano, play this on the guitar, and teach
the 6th graders how to read musical scores.

The teacher looks at me, looks at the sixth graders,
and says carry on. I think you are doing a heck of a job.
We start marching next.
