An angel on the mantel
is seen every day
As I sit in silence
In the living-room
The guitar in hand
The angel is playing
Music of a song
Only he can hear

Momma's stockings she made hanged on cherry wood
Attributing back to the days that she could
Nevertheless filled them with treats as she should
Tickled us with stories by the hearth Christmas eve
Enchanting us with smiles, playing traditional "Greensleeves"
Loveable mother I sit, looking at the mantel and grieve

A stretch and yawn, upon the dawn, where golden sunlight warms
Venetian blinds, are wound with care, and opens up the morn
The early dew is drying now, and sun lies on the hills
The chill of night has disappeared, and everything is still
Two doves are strutting on the path, of cobblestone and sand
A clothesline strung across the yard, sails sheets against the wind
A quaintness of a cottage row, hangs on to yesterday
Where doves would sing a peaceful song, to welcome a new day
Inspired by a Painting... 9/1/14

Daddy had a mantel clock on that shelf above the fire.
I remember how it sometimes seemed to call my Sis a liar.
Sis would be out on a date and the wheels of time would turn
My dad, it seemed would always be awake when she returned.
Now Daddy was quite strict on Sis – at nine she must be in.
And she was in real trouble if it was as late as ten.
“Darlin’, what’s the time?” he’d yell as she slipped in..
“Daddy, it’s about nine,” she’d shout, as that old clock struck ten.

Blue velvet blanket mantel dresses
Satin lace trim daintily caresses
On border, golden twine tresses
Azure light-display luminesces
In background, silver candelabra recesses
In foreground, satin Lilies rimmed with lush cresses
Overarching, marble angel with copper harp blesses
Underpinning, tidy Spruce wreath butresses
Footstool, bronze crèche a penitent tone expresses

Christmases Past, on Mantel Hung
Three stockings line the hearth, each one a "tail"
of warm Christmas past, of love
hand-knitted, chewed by pup!
