It's me, Saeed Koushan—

In the beginning, I was a voice carved from stone,
a heartbeat caught between sacred hymn and moan,
the earth that held me claimed me as its own.

Love was the ember they taught us to smother,
the hidden flame we passed to one another,
wrapped tight beneath our grandmother's cover.

I walked where cameras blinked like dying

A warrior saint came from the plains of rural France,
a beautiful maiden named Joan, dressed in simple clothes,
not of noble lineage, but of modest beginnings
her faith unmatched.  

Shielded by heavenly whispers, 
she took up a religious cause~
mounted on

snowfall

snow softly falls white
shimmering dust that coats all
glints in early moon
altering our perception
of our familiar landscapes

young tree limbs soon bend
under the weight they carry
as midnight passes
slow softening the edges
of disappearing landscapes

blanket now complete
undulating white vista
as the dawn reveals
memories we need to see
our now forgotten landscapes

Marathon of Memories

The morning fog low over the empty streets,
soft as a whispered promise.
My shoes slapped the pavement in steady rhythm--
each step a heartbeat counting the miles.
I had yet to run—and those I’d left behind.

Streetlamps stretched shadows across brick walls.
Long, crooked shapes that seemed to shiver.
A dog barked somewhere—
sharp, sudden—
and I remembered even echoes can run far.

I treasure

when I check the time
and see the diamonds on
bezel and dial, I smile

“her love stays with me all the time”

imprint 
in cement

pressed in the sidewalk
we lingered there and talked 
a thought she once gave to me

"a soul friendship will ever be"

I AM LAVENDER

I AM LAVENDER

I stroll through fields of lavender,
the air thick with the scent of memory.

I feel time unfolding like a delicate frond,
each moment wrapped in a calming lavender.

I think about the lavender colors in my heart, 
the soft bruises and the times of lavender grace. 

I take a deep breath and listen~
languid lavender speaks of

Underneath the Overpass

Underneath the overpass as I was passing by,?
Something in the shadows, a shape had caught my eye.?
I couldn’t tell just what it was—intrusive thoughts owned me,?
For once I didn’t understand the shape my mind did see.

I drove on down the interstate, the rain began to pour,?
Wipers rapping,
?Thunder clapping, ?
Storming at my door.?
Lightning struck around me—waking

X1: Memory: Child-hood

The voices i have,
screaming
in the middle
of my dreams,
The xmas trees
mean
nothing
to me,
The spirit
is not here
No joy,
plastic plates
and the deli meats
and salads
we ordered.
The food,
was premium,
succulent
was the chicken
and turkey
and the ham and
beetroot,
but empty
of his
bellow laughs
and my mother's
complaining.
Sad as never sober
on xmas day
I wish
the whole
family
was here
together.

As Idaho Leaves

For fifteen long years Idaho stayed

Like a rich tapestry laid

From Boise Mountains warm glow

To the Treasure Valley below

Memories now ghostly with edges frayed

Beauty in the Dust

Once, when I was small, 
and banished to the hall 
for something I had done that wasn't right, 
I stood awhile in shame, 
but then the sunlight came, 
and lit the dusty air with dancing light. 

I watched in wondering awe, 
as suddenly I saw, 
what, standing in the shadows, I'd not seen. 
Invisible, but

Utopia

I close my eyes and transcend to a place,
A place where there's no pressure to ace.
A place where serene waters flow,
Where moonlight glows.

A place where breeze lightly grazes my skin,
A place away from losses and wins.
A place where I run barefoot in the grass,
A place where I sit with my thoughts amassed.

A place beyond calm
