hens and robins warm their eggs
nesting, they cover their legs
these mothers, innate modesty display
values from yesterday ~ for today

Hens were in the spa for the third time that day
Farmer Jones was angry, for they now had a weird lay
Their eggs were hard-boiled, nothing ready to fry up.
We’ll have to throw away that spa he said to his pup.
If you throw away our spa, we will quit laying they said.
The hens loved sitting in the hot water until their bottoms were red.
Could you give us regular eggs once in a while? Asked Farmer Jones.
Rebel hens laughed, spit chicken feed at him and recited mean poems.

The chicks around here are really
Tough and mean
So mean they'd spit in your eye
Steal a babbies ice cream
And make them cry
Dressed in leathers
Riding their noisy roaring motorcycles
At speed
Terrorising the neighbourhood
With their wicked deeds
Their birds of a feather
Rebels without a cause
That stick together
Lock all your windows
And lock all your doors
People run for their lives
The outlaws frighten people all the time
I daren't tell you
What they did to my friend
It was really bad
And really sad
They may only be a mere few inches tall
And should be kept in a pen
So says their mother
Hen

The hens from our small, urban farm,
Had wild idea, caused great fright:
Escape their pen, come to no harm,
See a show, without a blight.
With feathers ruffling at benight,
They made plans and added some smarm,
Darkened room, their intended site,
The hens from our small, urban farm.
They marched single file full of charm,
Crazy chicks, on a daring plight,
Ignoring grumbles from their tharm,
Had wild idea, caused great fright.
Forged ahead and ready to fight,
Broke their fence in one clucking swarm,
Accomplished task, without desight:
Escape their pen, come to no harm.
Sodas in beaks, seated disarm,
Screen flashing, their eyes all alight,
Snacks in wings, no need for alarm,
See a show, without a blight.
A hot buttered popcorn, their right,
They'd wielded fowl mettle from dorm,
Hid their combs to avoid incite,
They also did get their wings warm,
Small, urban farm.

Span of a Hen's Life
An aged hen clucks backwards without getting choked
I still recall when she was a yolk

Have you seen what the hens and chicks have added? She asked me.
I had no idea, but I was going to be going to the succulent forest for tea.
When I arrived, I was amazed at what I found.
A mommy duck and her two ducklings swimming around.
Where did they come from? I asked the forest, but the wind laughed.
I want some too, I said to them. All I have is a stubborn giraffe!
The wind would not tell me, and the oak trees were numb.
The hens and the chicks pretended to be deaf and dumb.
Come on! I implored them. Please let me know where to find.
My own mommy duck, please have mercy; be kind.
We had her flown in from Iowa, they told me. it’s winter up there.
I asked them for the address, and boy did those hens and chicks stare.
You cannot say where you got it, they warned me with scorn.
Those farmers are tough in the land of the soybeans and corn.
They struck a hard bargain too, but I got rid of the giraffe.
So, in a way I got the very last laugh.

The hens have flown the coop
Their owner mystified
He hit them with his silver spoon
Didn't know they had pride
And now as folks leave Illinois
Governor Pritzker, take a think
From the tap of the hen-owner
You should no longer drink

A cock and hens in a cage
The cock is in it’s old age
All hens cock to manage
To live in love cock encourages
Hens are always in bandage
The cock is making them damage
The cock keeping hens engaged
The hens are taken into his salvage

Where is the new foreman I asked.
He’s down in the barn, herding the hens
I ran right down. Hens are quite a task.
He had brand new bib overalls; he fit right in
He’s a little young isn’t he? I asked my mom
You were younger, she quickly reminded me
The hens took to him like a hypnotic ‘om’.
I was the proudest parent I could ever be.

Blind date
like-minded
I asked:
... gentleman ?
Great taste ?
Did you kiss ?
- Maybe ...
Coffee or
a glass ...
of fine wine
Friendly
and open
Even
a blind hen ...
find "true" love

Such a commotion; a cackling cacophony of hens.
My neighbors chickens, trained to obey on command; colorful bevy of beauties.
Yard bird narrow-faces; never the least bit boring.
