The world too much occupied his mind
left no room for things mundane
busy with intrigues of state and such
from deep feelings he resolutely abstained
So it was on that triumphant day he’d predicted
his country’s president’s assassination
he absent-mindedly fed into the shredder
his only daughter’s wedding invitation
It was the biggest blizzard in Colorado’s history.
Roads were closed.
Guests were texting their apologies.
Samantha made it, but her wedding dress did not.
Her mother had been gone for years.
She was eagerly looking toward the door for her father.
He did not arrive to give her away.
Neither did her wedding dress.
She got married in her regular clothes.
Her groom did not care. He adores whatever she has on.
Right before the traditional daddy daughter dance the door opened.
Her father came in.
She nearly dropped to her knees in gratitude.
This was what she had been praying for.
You got here Daddy!
I would not have missed it baby, he said.
He had her wedding dress.
She wore it to her reception.
Love arrives on bluebird wings
Butterflies, strings, myriads of things,
She discovers with rapt fascination
A new world dizzy with animation.
Each day she learns as she grows
She began by fondling her little toes
Expanding her experiences bit by bit
From her big brother she learned to spit.
And before I knew it, she went away
I knew it would happen … her wedding day
Now, the grandchildren are coming to visit,
And I am learning the meaning of exquisite.
I’ll always cherish the memory, my heart sings,
Remembering how love arrived on bluebird wings.

Unsteadily he walks down the linen aisle
On his right arm the pride and joy of his life,
Proud he is, you can see it in his broad smile
A young man at the altar will make her his wife.
Sounds of the Wedding March reverberate
Around the walls of the old, ornate cathedral,
And the priest stands tall, ready to officiate
The papers have been signed, and it’s all legal.
He glances out the corner of his eye and sees
The mother-of-the-bride seated near the front,
She’s the most beautiful lady present, if you please,
Since the day they stood at the baptismal font.

I know it is my wedding day
but I need to study the sharks a bit longer
Her mother left her then.
Her sister kept harping for a bit
Eventually wandering away too
What am I getting into? She asked the sharks.
Is he a good man, or will the evil side come out?
She had a friend whose husband turned into an abuser
The sharks swam past at a leisurely pace
She stood there for a long time, communing
They answered her in the best way they could.
I am ready, she told her father.
Are we going up the aisle or out the back door? He asked.
She loved him so, he knew her better than all the others.
My daughter's ideas strange as could be
A moonscape wedding demanded from me
Would Lunar sites open June twenty-three
I checked with NASA; it wasn't to be
What now? said my daughter, awash in tears
Reliving some of her very worst fears
Earthbound doesn't cut it, she pleaded so
I had to think fast, but what did I know
Despair to my left. Disgrace on my right
I sat there a-thinking, all the long night...
Morning dawned bright, solution's clarity
A space station wedding, so easy to see
Rejoicing's at hand -- let's strike up the band
We blast off tonight, from warm desert sands
As the Djembe drum beats to the rythm of my heart,
The wedding reception is about to start.
I hear your laughter from across the room,
Wearing a gold and white dress you were in full bloom.
You were not the bride yet you stole the limelight.
The bride was beautiful sure, yet you were the cutest sight!
My hands reached towards you
"My daughter, did u loose your little gold shoe?"
Laughing you layed your head on my shoulder,
Little did we know its our last date; life is about to get alot colder...
An angry Father, that wore a frown
has watched the rise of the devil's moon
While pacing, he's worn the carpet down
They arrive at dawn, and none too soon!
Broken curfews, her virtue at stake
The stakes are high, but the daughter dared
Dad quickly plans a wedding date!
No explanation or sage to share
They are ushered in, without a sigh
Their vows would choke the most aloof
It clouds the starlight in their eyes,
and shoots the moon, un-bullet proofed!
This patriarch must take a stand
Holy wedlock was in high demand !

Please say if you have savvy
In the arts of matrimony
Wouldn't you take that step again
And avow your testimony
Of Belle and Beaux the story is
Of passion they are driven
To pen upon the book of love
Their names both new and given
Won’t it be grand to say and stand
To lead the maiden fair
With silk and lace upon her face
And flowers in her hair
To one who would to have and hold
Revoke at any claim
Speak it now or forever fold
This Belle shall bear my name
The kin shall join high on a bluff
Beneath a harvest sky
Give thanks and pray that joyous day
And never wonder why

Daddy's Little Girl
By Elaine Roy
O Daddy, how I remember how your smile, always shined down on me
How you told me, that I was the best Birthday present, you ever got, the day you adopted me
When I would drive you crazy, asking why questions. You would tell me, you had to think about it and when you found the answer; you always explain it to me.
You always made me happy, just being around you; you always filled my heart with joy!
I always enjoyed listing and learning, through the stories that you share with me!
You never stop believing in me, even when I did!
You show me, hope, when I couldn't see it!
You always, found away, to make me smile!
I remember, how we danced at my wedding, to Daddy's Little Girl!
I’m so proud of being “Daddy’s Little Girl”
Yes, I’m “Daddy’s Little Girl, cause I was born from his heart!
O Daddy, I miss you every day and I can still hear your voice, after all these years!
Now, you live here in my heart forever, reminding me why life is so beautiful and treasured
He turned away at end of day
From his promise to wed.
With loathsome smile, nothing but vile,
Denied what he had said.
“I’ll return home, from which I roam,
To wife who waits for me.
You should forget we ever met,
I’ll not your future be.”
I sadly cried, said he had lied,
He patted my bent back.
“Oh little one, it has been fun.
But you’re getting the sack.”
Feeling so bad, I called my dad,
Told him my love had lied.
He came so fast with gun to blast
The one for whom I’d sighed.
In steady voice, said, “You’ve a choice
You’ll either run or die.
No man does live, whom I’ll forgive
For making my girl cry”.
I beg young miss, take heed from this
And do not give your trust
To him who’d bed before you’re wed.
That wedding ring’s a must.
All brides are lovely on their wedding day.
But she glows with her upswept auburn hair,
and her blue eyes sparkling under her veil.
He steps back and takes a mental snapshot.
He never wants to forget this moment.
She looks one last time at her reflection,
and with a deep breath, calmly takes his hand.
He has happily awaited this day,
and he has dreaded this day since her birth.
This father is filled with mixed emotions.
He smiles at his daughter with teary eyes.
She kisses his cheek as the music starts.
"Procession of Joy" echoes in his ears.
All eyes are fixed on the beautiful bride,
but his eyes watch his future son-in-law.
He looks closely for the groom's reaction.
The nervous groom radiates with true love ~
a smile of joy as sweat beads from his brow,
and Dad smiles knowing his daughter chose well.
A father could want nothing more than this.
