Nothing is quite like it used to be
Not saying everything was better then
What happened to the live Christmas tree
Instead of this one, made from tin?

But we didn’t pollute everything with plastic
And, quite frankly, I can remember when
Whatever happened didn’t seem so drastic!
Back then we respected our elders, ‘tis true,
Appreciating their wisdom, no googling it
When we wondered what we should do,
Most importantly, we avoided stepping in **it.
It seems nowadays, we’ve lost commonsense
Many want to tear down instead of build up
Doing what’s morally right? We sit on the fence
Evening news is like drinking from a bitter cup.
If I sound pessimistic; no, I’m merely observing
Many changes are good, but some are not so laudable
I am concerned that we are not as conserving,
And, as to fixing our problems, largely improbable.

Weary from long and tiring quests.
A foul expression seeps like a pest.
Unwillingness to accept being ignored.
Do you give up or avoid looking forward?
A sturdy base from which to expand
These broken walls are pretty stand
This continued to stand for the test of time.
Many tales, only God can count, and sublime
The walls wound them deep inside.

Belatedly aware of no oasis ahead nor the look-alike of a river.
Water is the double assurance of life in a world unlived,

The headland bush is paradise,
especially through the week,
there's rocks to climb; a couple of caves,
and a shaded running creek.
Ron and I have found secret spots,
where we can hide our fishing poles,
and we don't need no swimming gear,
when we swim in the fishing holes.
There are no roads for cars and such,
just tracks on the forest floors,
so we seek our destinations,
on trails made by wombat paws,
And we're lucky when it's lunchtime,
for we can sit down in some glade,
then feast on oranges and apples,
after sandwiches that Mum made.
We're loving what we're doing here;
our knowledge seems to grow and grow.
We've learnt all about conserving.
We catch a fish and let it go.
We’ve been bit by angry bull-ants,
that gave us pain to send us numb.
We rub the stings with bracken fern,
because we couldn't tell no one.
We know the names of all the birds,
and the plants and pretty flowers,
or where the sun sits in the sky,
at the finish of schooling hours.
For when we're in the headland bush,
we really only break one rule;
we're learning what we want to learn -
we're just not learning in the school.
