Di Mango Tree's Lament

Di mango tree deh pon di hilltop, high an' grand!
Mango dem a dangle ripe an' sweet and in demand.
Mango season come- di time when mi shine-
People come from all 'round fi taste how mi juice fine!

COCONUT OF THE CARIBBEAN

Fish a floating coconut from edge of the Caribbean Sea
Hux the outermost part with a machete
See its brown hairy shell hard as a rock,
Pierce its eyes, which will rain healing waters.
Cut out the white meat for lunch or dessert!
Create some ornament from its polished shell.

A Caribbean Dream

I’m sure I was dreaming.
I could never afford to travel
To the most beautiful island
The world could provide.

Yet there I was swimming 
In warm clear aquamarine seas.
Out on the sand the view was stunning.
Houses built on the sea itself,
An aroma of shellfish and chicken
Filled the pure air.  I was hungry.

A schooner swoons over sapphire sea,
Eager the look in your eye, 
She leans to the wind as you lean to me,
There are no dark clouds in the sky,
     Oh the easy breezes gentling skin
     Tomorrow moves like the horizon

Port Royal

PORT ROYAL 
You want to see the fate that was Port Royal’s?
Then let me flyyou back three hundred years:
look in this tavern, see those buccaneers,
flushed more from fiery grog than honest toils,
who soon would dice away their ill-won spoils;
then hear the thunder roaring in their ears
as underfoot all firmness disappears
and round their throats the rising

Two, perhaps three miles out to sea, beyond the reef to Zapatillas,
Bocas’ dual sand-edged footprint jewels with jungle centre trees, 
Francesco’s outboard boat heads out to Caribbean’s deeper blue.

Ah, you painted the snail! I said, in an ignorant way.
No, she replied. She was born like that in the Caribbean.
But I am not used to snails from anywhere other than Canada Bay.
