Today’s John Lennon’s birthday,
Which I knew from teenage days,
When I was part of what became
That magic Beatles craze.
Just yesterday, in Inverness,
I walked by a cafe
Where a sign announced the “Silver Beetles”
Played there in the day.
The year was 1960,
Their first ever on a tour,
But performing a “support act”
And their set list tells us more.
There were 7 songs in total,
Buddy Holly, Elvis, too,
Though no Lennon and McCartneys -
If their young selves only knew!
Now it’s 65 years later,
With my teenage years long gone,
As are John and George, but Paul and Ringo
Live to carry on.
Hopin' and flyin' high
Still somethin' was amiss,
Just you know why ...
It had to end like this
Not fade away a shining star
With three million records sold,
Yet, silent fell his guitar ...
And, glasses rest infold
A sound never to be heard
Soon after that final show,
Boy, give us a clue, a word
Maybe one day we'll know
What happened that dark night
Over a quiet field of corn,
Lost in a flurry of white ...
Then found early the next morn
Ever altered by what he gave
Things change and time flies,
Rock n' roll, rant and rave
And still the music never dies.

Kalamazoo kids went off to war
leaving giddy gals to go forward in fractured
factories ~from music to munitions
gay guitars would wait until battered boys
came hurriedly home...
or would they wait?
The thought was there but Gibson's gals
did not care for world war and behind
the building's walls would give guitars
attuned attention; first making munitions
then manufacturing those magical music guitars.
The Gibson Factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan is known for its iconic guitars... During World War II, many of Gibson’s competitors had switched to munition-making in an effort to support the war at home. Gibson followed suit—on the surface, at least. While it did hire more women than any other guitar-turned-munitions manufacturer, these women weren’t just making bullets—they were also making guitars. Specifically, the Kalamazoo Gals made Gibson’s Banner line of guitars, which were later used by musicians like Buddy Holly and Woody Guthrie. ~Atlas Obscura
Just best in show, moments of beauty, strong, smart,
a french bull dog, a lion dog Pekingese, and then
wonderful, dog winner Buddy Holly
mankind creating something special and fun
a release from the sadness and hunger, the fatigue
just an hour or two, something easy and sweet
a rare minute, I'll take it and pet my dog, a mix
rescued and now elderly, once he stayed by me
as I struggled with chemo
now we have a moments of ease
in a hard hard world.
Those five magic years
From when friendship started
To, friendship still intact,
Life tracks widened and parted,
You off to Manchester
In pursuit of your degree
Me to a military life
And service in Germany.
In those five magic years
We achieved so much
And through passing years
Always stayed in touch.
We discovered skiffle, had our own band,
joys of country music, the lifelong love of
Hank, saw Buddy Holly live, met so many
of our heroes, Lonnie, Sonny and Brownie,
Rambling Jack, chased the same girls,
the pleasure from a pint of beer, grew to a
stage where we both needed change from
days in humdrum office life and chose our
different paths.
And so those years ended
Our common experiences gone
But through subsequent life
That friendship carried on.
I am so sad now dementia
Is destroying you, old friend,
Understand you don’t want
Me to see your tragic end.
I think of you so much,
Often through a film of tears,
Recalling all the joys of
Those first five magic years.
he told me she was stalking him
she'd taken photos of him secretly
but i said to him, like
the Buddy Holly song says,
it's so easy to fall in love
it's so easy to fall in love
it's so easy
it seems so easy
he
thanked me
for the
wisdom
