Best Wang Poems

To You, Tainan-I

In the beginning it was just a smell
a smell i could not quite make sense of
a smell that the city was, a smell that the people in it were

in the beginning it was just a smell
a smell that dragged swarms of people of their homes
onto the streets, into the trains, into the strangers’ eyes and their uncharted territories

slowly i realised
all cities are, first, smells to the outsiders
and Tainan was smell sound taste touch to me

there were moments when i felt
this city is just people, so many of them; how beautiful
that i do not know any of them, yet i know them all

sometimes i would think if i emptied the city of all these countless faces
and bodies jostling with each other, what would remain of the city? would it still beat if i put my ears into the hearts of the depeopled Shennong Street
at the dead of night?

i came to Taiwan for the same reason
that a Vietnamese, an Indonesian, or an American comes for,
to chase my dreams, to become more of me,

instead I became it

it wasn’t as easy and quick as they make it out to be;
it took time, for love has its own mysterious ways

i started to embrace Taiwan and its culture
huge numbers of scooters and cars
Everyone follows the traffic rules
wait patiently for the green signals
one in Tainan city never feels pity
city buses and t-bikes are the best friends of a wanderer in the city
people are always helpful,
they adore you as they adore ‘hello kitty’;

small parks almost at every half a kilometer
elderly people like Mr. and Mrs. Wang use them for exercise
sometimes the parks provide sweet beds to the homeless;
i often use the underground passage of the Tainan train station
i look at the people sleeping there
they have made their small worlds in the underpass
they eat, they sleep, they chat with their neighbours
people look quite strange and funny without boundaries around them

their small worlds haven’t yet known the ways of the boundaries, the frontiers; these people are happy in heavy rains and in extreme cold, are they happy?
Tainan has a home for everyone, i guess

when I feel bored, i go to the sea
and bathe in the sounds of its waves lapping against the shores
sunset-platform lets you enjoy the majestic sunset and calming breeze born of the boundless deep

disappearing book sellers in the south
Chinese spies hunt one and all
Army of thieves , worldwide

Zhao Ziyang, where is he?
erased from Chinese history
where is the brave young man
who battled one thousand tanks?

Xu Jiatun, where is he?

truth has no play in China today
only death and propaganda reign

Xi Jinping, crimes against humanity
Lu Shaye, propogandist to the core
Leaders of a revolution long dead

Here is the love story of Zhi Nu and Niu Lang
A romantic ancient Chinese tale of very long
Zhi was a nymph and Niu Lang was a cowherd
Cowherd-nymph love forbidden,secretly wedded.

Had two children, but their happy life ended.
As by the goddess Wang they were detected.
The goddess took Zhi Nu back to the heaven
Niu Lang chased them with his two children.

They were blocked by the milky way- sky river
And the children kept crying for their mother,
Shouting her name, Niu and children wandered
By their pain and grief, the goddess was moved.

She allowed them to meet one day in a year
Could be seen in the sky as Altair and Vega star
They meet and live happily ever after for a day.
Day celebrated as Qixi- Chinese valentine day.

Wish I had a beloved like the nymph Zhi Nu fair
So that I can live in the sky with immortal affair.
Like William Blake would say "Death be not proud"
I would have said unlike Blake "Life be proud".

II
Yet another story of Yeh-Shen, the orphan girl
A Chinese Cinderella living with stepmother cruel
She had a friend, a fish living in a nearby river
Once the fish was killed by her cruel stepmother.

Yeh-Shen was very unhappy for of her friend dead.
An old man told her that bones of fish were powered
One day she talked to the bones of her fish friend
Then eventually Yeh-Shen in a beauty transformed.

Once she visited the king’s palace, the king saw her
They were married soon, lived happily ever after.

Wish I was tiger as friend with cruel stepmother
So I could enjoy good things at this age forever.
Wish I was a sculptor like Pygmalion, not a poet
Make alive ivory Galatea by grace of Aphrodite
Married her blessed with the happiness and love
And to have enjoyed long and blissful life to live
                         **********

*Based on Greek and Chinese fairy tales of Pygmalion-Galatea, Zhi Nu and Niu Lang
and Yeh-Shen

Goodnight My Beloved Grandma

Goodnight My Beloved Grandma (for Elizabeth Ugoeze Nwadinobi)

By Izunna Okafor

As an ocean bleeds unbounded
Troubling the sons it founded
In pathing the ways with tracks
Tears have bathed my wang with marks

What a world !

The wave blew aloud like a ruse
Kidnapping attentions as a tale
Only to jail some minds in her rue
Blinking as sorrow in the eyes of men

What a world !!

We never expected an untimely departure
But that has reposed our own to her home
For the time of men is tied to the nature
And our tears for the dead a show of sorrow

Death has seized the noble hen
And the chicks abandoned in the dusky earth
We cry not because we need a sympathetic help
But to cough sorrow off our heavy heart

Death is wicked
And the world a tricketh
But we'll forever remember you as a mother
Farewell and goodbye our dear grandmother

Good night !

Good night !!

Good night !!!

(Your Grandson)

Who staggered down the road feeling merry
Along came a man
With a two metre wang
He bumped into her and popped her cherry

Premium Member Wang's Cousin

I go to a restaurant owned by Wang Chung.
His specialty dish is shrimp egg foo young.
The food is the best in town without a doubt.
I usually go there when I want some takeout.
Wang is just too generous with the gravy.
It’s the most I’ve ever seen, and I don’t mean maybe!
Well, he didn’t put the lid on tight enough.
I had an experience that was plenty rough.
The lid opened and gravy was all over my shirt.
How do I get the stain out? It’s tougher than dirt.

Wang Chung sent me to his cousin who owns a laundry.
Wang told me that he was the one to see.
“My cousin can get your shirt whiter than white.
The first time only, he gets things right.”
I left the shirt at the laundry and departed in a spurt.
However, the ticket remained in the pocket of the shirt.
The next day, Wang’s cousin said this to me:
“So solly cholly! No tickee, no washee!”

The Village Fete

A glorious azure summer sky,
Triumphant with its blazing sun
Bestows the land with warmth and life
And lifts the hearts of everyone.

The Village fete is on today!
Come young and old, come rich and poor
To hear excited children laugh
To see old friends; perhaps make more…

Bright bunting in a breezy dance
Adorns each stall, gazebo, tent
And - while young Alice hooks her duck -
Delights in tickling Grandad’s head.

A glance beyond the Pivy doors
Reveals mouth-watering history
Through cakes and treats Great-Nan lives on
This recipe, her legacy.

Tradition swells – its Best in Show!
With pride and honour both at stake
Who’s miniature garden is the best?
Who’s bread will win the ‘Boys that Bake’?

There’s Wang the Welly, Splat the Rat
A barbecue to satisfy
There’s Guess the Weight and Lucky Dip
And Pimms and Beer, should you feel dry

The smiles and laughter fill the air
And filter up into the blue
And somewhere maybe, reach Great-Nan
Who sees her cake - and smiles with you.

IF YOU PULL A LONG FACE : Part XXXVII

IF you pull a long repentant face
It avails you to pull it where no one sees you pray
For forgiveness though not after being caught outright losing face
A stricken conscience e'en coached by counsel may not pardon parley

If you pull a fresh Wu Wang face
Better pawn it to those who would the right price pay
Such as a plea-bargain reduction in sentence
Which could pave the way to a bestseller screen play

But if you pull a long mea culpa earnest face
Just when the Eldest Son Zhen spring awakens the Lunar Year
The noble Fa-Ling lined Ganesha " A Daniel come to Judgment " may take offence
And thunder quake : " I'll nail you to the Cross " if you lie this cleansing day

If you yet could pull a long masked vengeful face
For slights or stings being overlooked by the Master riding high in clover
Then all exceptions undeleted none may plan to profit from this case
Might not things right themselves before the year runs out and make villains pay

If you must then pull a long Sacrificial Lamb face
Note how even the Mid-East Patriarch's foundations tremble on the very same day
No Saviour may lead his flock thrice out of the Walled Wilderness e'en into Outer Space
For he " who comes to Equity must come with clean hands " or else the ultimate price pay

Anger Mismanagement

I
want
to
undress
you
and
leave
you
dressed,
I
want
to
exhume
the
scum
that
lies
trapped
deep
down
the
mines
of
your
shallow
brain,
I
want
to
slice
you
open
with
screaming
double
edged
whispers,
Buy
spectacles
for
your
blurred
vision,
So
that
you
can
see
the
shine
i
am
pointing
at,
That
you
are
mocking
with
your
behind,
I
want
to
eavesdrop
into
the
conversation
of
your
mind
and
heart,
I
want
to
cross
examine
both
your
heart
and
mind,
Try
to
find
out
what
they
did
when
this
whirlwind
came
running,
I
wang
to
be
mean
and
be
the
words
that
i'm
speaking,
Rain
down
on
you
heavily,
Till
you
drown,
I
want
to
push
you
down
the
abyss
that
you
dug
for
yourself
and
watch
as
you
go
down,down
and
down,
Then
i
will
unleash
every
bit
of
dirt
upon
your
sorry
being,
Letting
it
follow
you
down
your
doomed
path,
Forever.

Twintig Tien Tot Nou

Twintig tien tot nou

So vinnig soos jy inwurm… in troosprys vlees-genot
..en dink dat dit so lank sal hou; Pasop vir toekoms lot!
En as ek dan verkeerd mag wees – bewys dit dat jy het
presies gedoen wat ek kon sien; Die fout was niè ons bed!

As ek die feite reg verstaan; en my gedagtes dwaal
na daardie tyd toe hy besluit; my by my werk kom haal –

Twee jaar later, facebook wys…, jul foto amper naak!

Nou sê jy my dat ek verbrou en jou wou agterlaat?
Terwyl die laaste legkaartstuk jou sondes teen my haat
wil ek probeer om aan te gaan…; my lewe op te bou
in plaas daarvan om blindelings my drang te onderhou.

Ek draai my rug finaal op jou, maak jy maar soos jy moet.
Mag hy jou gelukkig maak. Mag jy hom alles gee.
Ek was my hand onskuldig met - my vredevol’ gemoed
terwyl ek dan die laaste traan…; hier van my wang af vee.

Gonna Be a Redneck Wedding

Our family got the news today
Our bubba's gettin' hitched
Young Daisy Mae, she's near fourteen
Got our boy bewitched
He's sayin' that he loves her
He's making her his bride
She's the first to get him this close
Though not too many tried

We've got to get things ready
Send invitations and make candles
We've got to get the good jars out
The one's that still have handles
The minister is on alert
We've got to make some shine
Grandpa says he'll make some up
But, it will not all be mine

Gonna have a wedding, a real old fashioned bash
With all sorts of kissin cousins drinkin from their secret stash
The food will be impressive, there'll be turkey, pig and cow
The family won't get bigger, since we're related anyhow

This time there'll be no shotgun
Like the last time for old Ben
This time the guns are empty
Not the way they were back then
The banjos will be tuned up
There'll be music in the air
The cops won't try to stop it
I think most will all be there

The ladies will be planning
Just how to serve up all the grub
While Bubba has to find a suit
And therein lies the rub
He's never worn a suit at all
Not even for a day
He's only dressed in coveralls
And that's how he's gonna stay

Gonna have a wedding, a real old fashioned bash
With all sorts of kissin cousins drinkin from their secret stash
The food will be impressive, there'll be turkey, pig and cow
The family won't get bigger, since we're related anyhow

It'll be a wang dang doodle
A hell of a good time
It'll only be completed
When they run out of the shine
there'll be singing and some dancing
Underneath the harvest moon
We can't wait for it to happen
It cannot come too soon

There'll be readings from the bible
Which the minister will read
And as good holy Christians
Everyone will heed
There's sure to be some fighting
Before the couple say "I do"
I mean, they are both cousins
I'm gonna go...aren't you?

Gonna have a wedding, a real old fashioned bash
With all sorts of kissin cousins drinkin from their secret stash
The food will be impressive, there'll be turkey, pig and cow
The family won't get bigger, since we're related anyhow

Translation of Song Dynasty Poem: Plum Trees

Plum trees by the corner,
Sole bloom of winter;
With faint fragrance
Adorning the frost.
