chances of me leaving home
chances of me donning blues
chances of me wearing a flight suit
chances of me being chosen
to carry the sports flag
chances of me staying
what chance do I have to find love
chances of living a life apart
from what I had known
chances of being whistled at by ships
chances of the greatest adventure of my life
chances of boogie boarding the Pacific
chances of kittens
yes, kittens…mom wasn’t a fan
chances of tempura and teriyaki
chances of children in muumuus and leis
chances of sunshine and rainy season days
chances motor pedaling a bit far away
what we won’t do when we are pinch-cheek young
chances of wading, submerging, merging
with (parrot- butterfly- trigger- trumpet- ) fish; and tangs
chances of Hanauma reef and frozen peas
chances of being half a world away
chances of my son finding love in Guam
chances of my daughters marrying Southerners
chances of happiness
chances of me leaving home
Just when I think I've seen it
All throughout this land
They went and upped the anti
On the classic can of Spam
Those with the higher power
The ones that run the show
The Spam men of the hour
In a bunker buried way down low
Have added different flavors
To this meat of mystery
From Teriyaki to Tocino
That's bacon to those who don't speak Philippine
They heat it up with Jalapeno
Helps to liven up the slime
Those bunker boys as they're fondly known
Have really out done themselves this time
Aloha from Hawaii?
Imagine Spam in a Hula skirt
As they pull out the Leis and go all the way
Adding pineapple to those Spam burps
Exciting rumors have it
They're in talks with Oreo
There's no place in this universe
That a good slice of spam won't go
The only thing they need to work on
Is the dipping in the milk
They have yet to solve the problem
Of the massive oil spill
Yes they've taken what the rest of us
Never thought could be improved
Just goes to show what ingenuity
And a touch of crazy genius can do
Chipmunks roasting on an open fire,
It takes 10 to make a meal.
Grab one by the tail,
Drop him into the pan...
You can hear the little fella squeal.
A little teriyaki kills that gamey taste.
On a bed of brown rice, they're so good.
Cranberries on the side,
Open your mouth wide,
You'll want to eat more chipmunks...and you should.
Chipmunks are endangered,
but who really cares?
When they're gone, they're gone, I guess.
Even tho' there's not much meat,
They're so tasty and easy to eat
And preparation doesn't make a big mess.
So, just before Christmas, go trap a few,
Enough for you and all your friends.
Think how good your friends will feel
Eating such a good meal;
They'll be sad when Christmas dinner ends.
Merry Christmas, Alvin.
A wish for soy sauce,
What a delight it would be,
Chinese food for me.
I love poetry
I’m quite a loveable man
I do enjoy simple walks
I’m gaining knowledge
My family does come first
I love my sleek computer
I’m kind, enjoyable, full of feelings
I wear my heart on my sleeve
I’m a great friend to have
I enjoy good games
I love teriyaki steaks
I like my roses
To enter my heart, you must first love it

I love to eat; and I always wanted to learn how to cook
But mama said I wasn’t capable yet
She would always let my little sister stay in the kitchen and watch her make Sunday
dinner
I guarantee you if mama let me do that, I’d be the best cook you bet
My sister was seven and I was nine
And for some reason my mother thought females were more efficient in house labor and
cooking
But that doesn’t apply to me because I have a passion for making food and comestibles
And if I don’t become a good chef, I might end up in central bookings
So I called my aunt to see if she can teach me and she was so happy
Every Saturday, she would pick me up, put on my apron and teach me dish from dish
After she taught me everything, one day I snuck and made my way into mama’s kitchen
I decided to cook a six-cheesed lasagna and smothered teriyaki fish
Suddenly, the light flicked on and off
I turned around and saw mama there with her belt
As I trembled, she walked up to the stove and tried a piece of meat
And when she smiled and licked her fingers, I knew how proud she really felt
I felt proud that I was able to stand up for myself
And when mama had me cook on Thanksgiving I felt even better
As I built up my arrogance I went to my sister and said…..
Anything you can cook, I can cook even better
when upon grasping in the fridge
for a bottle of hot sauce
amidst the myriad of styles
collected for the taste,
her/his hand grasped hold of a
teriyaki hot sauce,
something of which s/he him/herself
thought that s/he’d created
one early eve,
upon returning from work
with a hungry stomach &
nothing but frozen potatoes to
microwave & just a little butter
to be had---
whence administering the cayenne
sauce, of which Frank’s was all
that roamed free in the vacant
box of ice,
s/he’d chosen to mix it with the soy sauce
left over from an attempt at a
Schezwan dish a few nights earlier &
in retrospect, the taste was
something that s/he swore s/he’d repeat,
given the right circumstances &
the right desire.
when s/he was younger &
tinkering in her/his dad’s garage, s/he
nailed two leather straps to two corresponding
planks of wood, then
slipping her booted feet in,
s/he got atop a snow hill & slid down
with her/his weight a few feet,
before falling face down in the snow
that had not yet really packed in &
alas,
s/he didn’t let the light bulb glow further,
instead, discovering with the rest of us later
that this invention would come to be known as
the “snowboard” &
that “snowboarding” would become a zillion dollar
industry---
so,
one can imagine that when s/he saw that
some company who makes hot sauces,
had already put two & two together,
mixing soy sauce with a cayenne based sauce,
s/he was quite dissatisfied to say the least &
after unscrewing the cap, licking the top to check
the taste,
the anger built up inside &
s/he him/herself felt that s/he was one step away
from smashing the bottle on the kitchen floor
in a fit of rage,
because s/he’d have to go on working the rest of
his/her life,
when joe/jen schmo would get to live out
the rest of their lives
sipping Mai Tais, greased up in coconut oil on
some beach---
but then that light bulb did kick in,
if not better late than never
&
s/he did not smash the bottle,
because after all,
it was goddamned tasty.

Mastications In One Movement
Lathering on the ranch dressing,
mixed with honey mustard grunting;
these inhaling engorging souls are
finding the emotional precipice,
high up and dangling,
hanging by french fried ropes,
smothered in thousand island arrhythmias.
here come the fat waiters,
pushing arteriosclerotic meat carts,
spangled in barbecued thrombosis
and chocolate-covered infarctions,
served au jus on peanut butter trays
filled with maple syrup cherries and
white-creamed heart palpitations.
You know what I mean?
You’ve smelled those words before,
tasted their glazed cordials,
licked the candy flowers
as they swayed there, and
sucked the inner pap of the sweet melon
with perspiring brow; now
having a reason to wake up, it is
time for cupcakes and cinnamon churros
with the vanilla-skirted girls,
marinating inside bacon and lettuce taxis,
dipped in onion teriyaki, sizzling
delicious smoke with au gratin effusions.

T' night after a peaceful bubbly sunset
And a well painted aftermath.
We 're about to stroll down
Alongside the Alawai Canal
Beneath aloha waving palm fronds
Carefully stepping around the biggest frogs
We've ever seen
At least twice the size of a normal bull frog
The radio station is disappearing into darkness
Lit up Kalakau boulevard replaces setting sunlight
We cross diagonally headed up from Lipipee Street
Towards our apartment home at 710 Pumehana
The cool onshore breeze ripples her mumu and my aloha shirt
The tiki bar across the bridge is as unlit as ever
The crowd and the owners discourage haolis
Enjoying the privacy of talking the kind
And the simple pleasures of neighborly friends
The pupu and beer flows freely as the night deepens
Teriyaki never tasted so good and picking lichees
on the way back over makes the night taste forever
