Best Lester Poems
Looking Back Long Ago
We had been looking back long ago
While time crept by seeming so slow;
Distance between time kept spreading;
May do something they were dreading.
On a broad beach boots hit the sand,
After looking at sight of a lonely land;
On shore was blowing a light breeze;
Exposed enemy on hills and up in trees.
Explosions and bullets sounded so loud;
Later that day heads would be bowed
Thanking God that He let them survive;
Being in one piece and remaining alive.
At Normandy we each dutifully performed
When the troops on shore had all stormed
Only thing which was left that remained
Had been blown to bits or blood-stained.
PVT Lester E. Deschler Died July 12th, 1944
in a tank explosion. He is now buried at
Normandy America Cemetery and Memorial.
Am unsure if he was an uncle or great-uncle
of Ms. Kelley Deschler a Poetry Soup lover.

Get out the vote?
I can't I'm on a boat.
Mixing paints, red and blue.
My political flag is purple,
That's right,
Go 'head and sue.
Once I pull into harbor,
Sure I'll consider Obamer...
Sorry it's been awhile
Is my pronunciation vile?
Do we see the forest for the trees?
Or the humans in the parties?
I planned on throwing one once ashore.
Liberal, conservative, hippie, chiropractor--just don't be a bore!
My wet dog Lester whimpers for me to run for Senate.
I tell him I have no agenda, no ten point plan, just wanna see the Cubs win the pennant.
He paw-clatters starboard, ears turned away.
My first speech met with dogged disinterest as we floated through the bay.
"Monkeys in the zoo," I say as I zip-cast my line.
"That's all they are, Lester," and I felt to say it rather fine.
"Monkeys, may be," Lester replied as he jaw-snapped some flies.
"But the cages are open, and they've taken to the streets, all wearing ties."
We'll make it to port one day, Lester and I.
When the game is done, and the shouting has ceased
And the towns are painted purple
As the monkeys look on, in disbelief.
Ginger can't get rid of her pimp boyfriend.
Lester Diamond is his name.
He takes money from her.
based on the 1995 film "Casino"
Devil Made Lester was a crazy young guy
Insisted on this nickname, wrote it in the sky
Made his Christian mother blush,
And his sister-brother sigh.
Come out! Devil Made Lester would often said.
You have only one life, and then you’re dead.
Sister-brother was too shy.
Scared to tell she was a guy.
Weekend friends were the ones who called her Fred.
Devil Lester tried every trick
To make his brother come out quick
His sister-brother stayed in the dark.
Amazed at daring Devil Lester’s bark

Lester the lizard, was a lusty old cuss,
he laid on the lawn and licked his legs all day.
Then one day Lizzie the lizard, with her long
lanky legs, came to play.
Lester said, "Lizzie, I think I'm in love,
you are the lady lizard for me."
They laughed, licked, and loved, forever more.
The moral of this story is,
never give up your search for that special one,
he/she may be closer than you think.
If you have a puzzle to put together,
best to own a cat to paw and ponder
the jigsaw path, fur flying,
schnozes sneezing, eyes squinting,
fingers tweezing.
Separation anxiety, as you figure out
which pile, to adopt, for each piece,
wizened to the fact, they all look the same.
“Aha,” as two go together, “of course,
I should have seen that.”
The cat's purring; is that a smile -
she knew. Her partner in crime,
its criminal to be so cocky;
he walks through the leaves;
it’s like a haystack to me.
I have to cover the coveted lot, at bedtime,
or I might lose “the last piece”
to a persnickety furball of malice.
Susie and Lester could have the final laugh,
as I search high and low, even in their jaws,
for the top of the tree.
Years later, missing the menacing duo,
I find the piece of gold; its only value
in the memory of the stalking,
meowing and marvelous disappearance
of kit and kat. If I had only kept the entirety
and hadn’t snapped. Just kidding - I glued it
to the wall next to the “waste of time eternity”
spent putting this monstrosity together, its test
(of my patience and love).
And I laughed and laughed, and called,
dialed each member of the cause,
the table of mystery, solved. Tears
streaming down each face.
Like pieces of the puzzle, misplaced,
each son and daughter -
as if Susie and Lester hid them too.
Those two, under Autumn leaves, turn over
in their graves, as if dreaming of their time
with this family; pawing the dirt,
nestled next to each other,
meowing in laughter.
