Don’t let her smile fool ya, she’ll make ya crawl
If looks could kill, she’d burn a hole through y’all
She’s a fiery philly
Saloon owners aren’t silly
Cayote ugly’s bar none, warned don’t start a brawl

Met on deck at her fab watering hole
The kind who leaves ya a heartbroken soul
Stay clear, Reina's her name
If ya ain’t got no game
Ya see her gussied up courtin, cry troll!

What Discursive Poetic Theme Shall I Write About

Hmm...What Discursive Poetic Theme Shall I Write About...

Premium Member Holiday Trolls and Dragon

The Trolls that live in the Basement are having a jolly old time!
Our Hubby let them have a touch of that delish Elderberry wine.
Most then got gussied up like Santa, tho a few are now Batman.
Said they’re off, to find those big red pots, and ring those crazy bells!

Some want to volunteer at the hospital, but there’s no worry, my dear.
For none seem to be able... to open that darn basement door, this year.
Perhaps it’s for the better, for they are RATHER big and kind of tall.
Don’t want some thinking: mutant, crazy Santas are heading for the mall.

Wait a minute! What do I see? They’re out! And escaping down the street!
All but one, that is, who’s on my mower, going to town, sitting on the seat!
He didn’t get it started, so like a little kid, he’s walking it. Isn’t that sweet!
Now don’t worry, I’ll call the neighbors up, for their yearly meet and greet.

That will slow them all down, until our friendly fireman does get to arrive.
He’s their Dojo master. They’ll listen to him without any questions, derived.
Besides, they can ride on his fire truck, as he speeds the Santa’s all over town.
Until they’re all worn out, tho they are also great help to stomp out any fires!

He’s teaching some to put out Dragons’ fire, and others how to handle a hose.
And we have carpenter Trolls that can rebuild so fast, before the sun has arose.
Yeah, everybody in town knows them, and Dragon who’s the truck mascot.
Dragon does the rescues, for as you know, fires don’t bother Dragons, a lot.

When they’re done, and all worn out, Grandpa Troll will lead them to the mall.
Where they’ll sing their favorite Christmas songs, and yes, get to ring the bell.
Finally we’ll lure them back home again, with Christmas cookies, for all, do tell.
They’ll warm up before a fireplace fire, that we let Dragon, finally start, for all.

Yeah, this happens every year, just like clockwork, during the holiday time.
You see, our Trolls are bigger than life, each with special, yet simple minds.
This year we taped it for a Christmas special… these special Basement Trolls.
And with all the laughter, there won’t be, a single dry eye, left to behold.

Premium Member Joey and Dragon Graduate

Today was the day Dragon’s brother Joey graduated from Nursing School.
And yes, Dragon wanted to be there, it was, really, going to be Sooo Cool!
Parents and students gussied up in all their finery, a sight truly to behold.
The University never, truly, looked better, as future dreams began to unfold.

And Joey gave Dragon, the best-est thing ever, his very own, special invite.
Now, we all know how things go amok, when Dragon is allowed on the site.
Every-thing was truly prepared, or so they thought, as Dragon sallied forth.
His own fire retardant Cap, Gown, and tassel to be immortalized, henceforth.

He was a part of the ceremony, to light their candles, in a symbolic gesture…
Before to the world, they, go forth, Why Dragon? Cause he’s such a treasure.
Yes, He’d receive an Honorary Degree, for all the lives, from fires, he’d saved.
Grandpa Troll was on the College Board of Directors, we were all amazed!

Apparently, Grandpa Troll had donated, a burn ward to the local Hospital…
Where our son Joey, would work, jump-starting his career, just a wee, little.
All the people Dragon had saved from fires, would be there to sing their praise.
As Joey wanted to dedicate his Nursing Career to burn patients, all his days.

It’s amazing how lives change, when strangers, are first allowed, into our lives.
And the Carpenter Trolls signed up for College, Architecture, was their drive.
Such determination, from a little Dragon egg, that was brought into our lives.
It brought so much purpose, to so many, when he chose, one morning to arrive.

Dragon roared out his glee and fire, sigh, as a surprise degree, was given to him!
All agreed no one needed the curtains, podium, or stage, as all sang, their hymn!
Hundreds of ready fire extinguishers, came into view, a new tradition was formed.
3 new degrees, came to the College curriculum, as thankfully, no one was harmed.

What three new degrees were added, you ask? Fire fighting, Burn Units Nursing,
Plus a Psychology Degree of “what change can do for your lives, if you let it in”.
Yeah, we’re all nuts! But very innovative, as our son, suggested, the new degrees.
Then he and Dragon led the hat toss, before leading all, out the door, to be free…

Hillbilly Redneck Sonnet

This redneck is fixin' to go dancin'
You reckon we get gussied up and go?
I'll be a high flutin' and a prancin'
Is the honky-tonk puttin' on a show?

Shall I wear my fanciest clod hoppers?
Shall I phone all your fiddle playin' kin?
I am gonna be such a show stopper.
We shall enter the dance contest and win.

I've got a hankerin' for hot romance,
And some granny-slappin' hillbilly sex.
Bear ten younguns, live in 'ternity pants
Did you just skedaddle, my newest ex?

Dern it, Darlin', thought we were so well matched.
I counted my chickens before they hatched!

Premium Member Spontaneous Smiles

Christmas sparks spontaneous smiles
on the faces of young and old.
A family celebration,
touting brotherly love and cheer.

On the faces of young and old,
a rosy glow is clearly seen.
Children can't wait for Santa Claus,
counting down the days in their dreams.

A family celebration
where gifts are received and given.
And placed under a sparkling tree,
all gussied up with tinsel foil.

Touting brotherly love and cheer,
it's a magical time of year.
And for a brief fantastic time,
neighbors share a greeting of peace.

Premium Member Dragons Penguins

Dragon really shouldn’t have borrowed the penguins, away from the Zoo.
Now he was their baby sitter at the lake, from morning till night, so true.
Not to mention a catasaurus was now stalking, his delightful little friends.
The Trolls volunteered their time, to help defend those cute ones, to the end.

He wanted to take them everywhere, wherever he could and had ever been.
Though most of those we’d been kicked out of… Well, here we go again.
First we passed our illustrious church, where the organ and voices rang on.
But as the penguins began to sing, it came out a screech, so I hurried them along.

Next we went to the local Ice cream Stand, where the Trolls devoured icy delights.
Brain freezes naturally ensued, so the penguins sat on their heads, what a sight!
The crowd applauded such an ingenious save, now penguin hats, are all the rage.
The Mayor gave them animal service vests, so in the news, he wouldn’t be upstaged.

This allowed them into the Mall, where lit fountains flow, a fascinating place, indeed!
Dragon became their slide, as the kids marveled at their fancy whoop-de-do deeds.
Next dragon herded them to a western shop, for sunbonnets, cowboy hats, and duds.
The mayor up for re-election, again, came along, and also got completely, gussied up.

Next was a candy store, where Dragon bought them a few, Yep, they’re like all kids.
A sugar rush ensued. Dragon reeled them in, before: who knew what, heaven forbid!
He even had to get them, out of the skylights, not easy for a bird that doesn’t fly…
But by directing them to the ice ring… he let them wear off their lengthy sugar high.

At the Mall Food Court, was sushi, and the children got to feed, the penguins they knew.
Naturally, the further they went, the more crowds ensued, until they bid the mall adieu.
But first they went to the bookstore, as yes, penguins like to read and be read to, too.
They’re now planning a penguin adventure book, ‘All the Things a Penguin Can Do’.

Then leaving the crowds, they went home on Dragon’s back, a lakeside nap, overdue.
Now I ask you very simply, if the penguins were yours to baby sit, so true…
Where, oh where, would you go… with such a precious little cargo, and you?

When Nature Gives You Porcupines

A porcupine, when threatened, will
Let loose upon his foe a quill
Or actually, I have a hunch
That he’d release a giant bunch.

I always knew about that use
But never knew that a papoose
Could find what every baby needs
Where quills are used instead of beads.

Yes, cradleboards and moccasins
And shirts or cloaks made out of skins
Were gussied up with filed-down quills
By Indians with awesome skills.

A new exhibit at the Met*
Has beadwork that I won’t forget
By Natives living on the Plains
Where porcupines shared their domains.

Or that is what I must assume
For every ornament and plume
They used to sew with (all by hand)
Was found nearby on native land.

That’s how it was in times gone by;
The local life could satisfy.
Those Indians, now mostly gone,
Today’d rely on Amazon!

A Balcony Over Venice

There’s a balcony over Venice
Somewhere outside Dallas, Texas
Through a sliding glass door

A couple sits toasting to the croons of Elvis
With paper cup chalice
Upon their European back porch

Making conversation language love
Beneath candle moon blue August
The symphony inside plays, dog barks, six children snore

“May I have this dance?”
The gussied up working stiff redneck asks
To the lady he adores

On a balcony over Venice
Two lovers sway
Hand on hand kissing even more

They dream together "moon rivers"
Between skips of old worn records
Holding on to their tender years

And tighter to homespun fantasies
More alive in the Italian Texas breeze
He twirls her on forever above smiles of gondoliers

And around their linoleum ballroom floor
Little eyes appear like starlight blinking
Twinkling out with laughter

There’s a balcony over Venice
Somewhere outside of Dallas, Texas
Where a father loves a mother, a son and five daughters

                                                                    Happily ever after

Premium Member Queen of Autumn Splendor

She stands there all summer
in everyday ordinary green,
but amid autumn's bouquet
she wears a lustrous sheen.

Her gown is splendiferous,
she's the queen of them all,
transformed like Cinderella
'gussied up' for the ball.

Glowing flaxen and scarlet,
all who view her agree,
there's nothing more radiant
than the sugar maple tree.

Southern Style

As a child, I was never bored
I spent hours gawking
going through my mother's
home decorating magazines
seeing things I'd never seen
that we could never afford

So full of spacious Southern homes
described as “gracious”
all wrapped in white porches with
white wicker chairs, clean, pristine
untouched, untainted
by 'common' people
and poverty

When they said “gracious”
they didn't mean
universally welcoming

But there were other issues
featuring “rustic” things
cabins and sheds, antique folk art
and cast iron beds
carefully curated collections
of antiquated stuff...
and these were my favorite fads by far
Yes, I thought- here was something
a style more attainable
for the likes of me

Rough, aged structures with
cracks in the walls
like my great aunt's hundred-year-old
cabin, except
theirs were prettier
than hers, all gussied up-
without the necessary utilities
utensils and ugliness
of everyday life

Theirs were not
actual homes, but mere display cases
for fancy flea-market finds
a backyard curiosity
not an actual place to live- because
Oh no- they would never consider
actually
living there

For there is nothing picturesque
about poverty

Going To a Wedding

Going to a wedding -
We will watch them tie the knot.
It’s nice to know that younger folk
Still give this thing a shot.

I’ll get myself all gussied up
(That word is proof I’m old),
Although I’m not the dress-up type
Most times, if truth be told.

The ceremony’s out of doors,
A garden the location
And then we’ll head inside to dine
And dance in celebration.

Originally weathermen
Predicted it would rain.
The sun decided otherwise,
The worries all in vain.

I’m sure it will be lovely
But the main thing that I think
Is, with all the preparation,
It’s all over in a blink.
