Best Contest Tanka Poems
Cold Monday morning
He mumbles under his breath
Car engine stutters
As he turns the key in vain
Temperature is rising.

Always by my side
Together seventeen years
Buried you today
Silent tears fall like raindrops
Why did my dog have to die?

through venetian blinds
slanting beams of light peep in
where she sits alone
reminiscing in silence
hoping that the bell would ring

Eyes like a clear lake,
reflections of a dreamland,
skylights for two hearts.
Walking amidst the cloud tops,
the light brightens up their day.

Lament for the Dead
buried deep beneath
Twin Towers’ bloodstained rubbles
my murdered loved one
a heartbroken heaven wept
trapping joy in a time warp…
In memory of Alva Sanchez who was killed on September 11, 2001, during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, in New York City; and dedicated to my nephew, Ryan who was left motherless.

children so carefree
laugh while sand castles
topple in the sea…
shattered dreams may bring
teardrops in maturity

You had lots of fun
At the local where drinks flowed.
Night took you away...
One last breath in mangled wreck;
My heart aches. Why can’t I cry?

everyone said
he was too small
for a good watch dog....
why did he leave
such a big hole in our hearts?

The Circle
Beginning and end
Together form full circle...
Life connects with death.
Your circle is formed…with tears
I mourn death’s painful closure.

I wept and I weep.
All my tears cried since that day,
could fill the oceans.
I counted each gasping breath;
the end came with dawn's bird song.

I took the bus mom,
h o l d i n g a bright rose for you;
clutched TIGHT in my hand . . .
I b r u s h brittle leaves away,
and lay down my w i l t e d ROSE.

I gave you my heart
and my infatuation
to ever entwine . . .
I leave you my devotion
at your stone cold tomb, engraved.
