Monocrostic (Birthday of May Panganiban)
Sunlight dictates our days somehow
Evenings speak of duvets now
People begin to cough or sneeze
Trees start to dread each single breeze
E-type says there’s nowhere to park
Mornings complain about the dark
Blackberries doubt that they’ll get picked
English sheepdog begs for a stick
Radio talks of candidates
Fake news drowns out any debate
Autumn colours each working day
Leaves demand to be swept away
Last week’s paper knew it was true
September would remember you.
Silhouette of golden sun rays
Embraced by melodic moon
Pulling off this dance by day
Till seducing nights like groom
Elegant draft spilling colorful leaf
Mahogany trees bend in wind
Bathing in daily blue breeze
Eve chills that seem not to end
Ready for your pumpkin spice
Fast from summer’s abuse
Alluring amber hearts that fly
Love is a hot call for a truce
Lullaby of leaves falls from trees
September sings soft to me

Races forward, seeking Summer’s abdication.
Even as the birds plan their migration south,
Willful Summer scoffs as she stifles the wind,
Eventually losing to the tug of chill air.
Looking at scorched ground, Summer abandons
Last requests to the barren clouds for quenching rains.
Trudging toward tomorrow, Summer remembers she was
Once a grand empress, and vows she shall be again!
She sheds her ragged regal robes and crown;
Uneasy in weight of peasant’s coarse tunic.
Maybe next year when the Sun again comes ‘round,
Maybe next year when Summer defends, just then,
Essence of life will calm and steady her realm.
Restoring hope for her next auspicious reign.
ETHEREAL
‘Ethereal’ must have been invented
To describe my lady’s beauty
Hair, finespun with hint of curl;
Eyes, deepest hazel, smouldering.
Regal bearing, head held high,
Elegance epitomized.
And today I’m feeling fancy-free.
Last night I’m sure she smiled at me.

Out of the yard
daughter Bev & me
on a hot summer day
of Eighty-three
Hastoe to Cadsden,
there and back
eight hours in the saddle..
for our first all-day
hack
Onto the canter path
down to Paines End
through Fox Lane
our route did wend
into a copse missing branches low
keeping the pace
to an even flow
Up to Dunsmore
by the Black Horse
via Little Hampden
we followed the course
down to
Chequers &
into Pondswood
up the hill
as ast as we cpuld
At to the Plough pub
tethered the horses
to the garden trees
ordered a ploughmans
with pickle&cheese
feet up awhile
for a long rest
enjoying a pint
of the landlord's best
then
into the saddle
no more time to laze
off at a canter
in the afternoon haze
Back in Hastoe
as the clock struck four
to stack the tack
on the stable door

After the rains disappear and summer heat dissolves
Under sapphire sky soft breeze ripples and revolves
Trees lining the garden path prepare to face the fall
Umber leaves wilt slow and wait for the winter’s call
Morning dew clings to the ochre grass as silver crown
Northern winds will spray opaque mist in the air soon.
Canopy of auburn forest observes the birds fly away
On the fallen rustling foliage mystique spectrums play
Last few days before the winter brings the frost along
On blue hills clouds waltz and wind sings autumn song
Rhythm resonates in my merry mind in words of rhyme
Spreads on my poem the sunset colors of autumn time.

Obsidian hearts – no longer beating -
Buried under magna and turned to stone.
Lodged in stupor – consciousness deleting -
In a state where the sun has never shone.
Vast emptiness surrounds them now like outer space.
Infinitude of blackness . . . is this hell?
Obtuseness overwhelmed them and stole their grace.
Never-ending nothingness – it serves them well.
