ABOUT ME : Late babyboomer Canadian born in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec, and raised in Northern Ontario. Fell in love with Ottawa where I received my B.A. with a major in french literature. Still living in Ottawa, I'm finding out that oncoming golden years offer a very rich perspective on life and beauty.

The themes of my poetry are found in everyday life. I write mostly free verse but I'm also a member of Haiku Canada and have had haiku published in various anthologies.

Please visit often my growing collection of poems and I hope you find many will resonate with you. I'd love to hear your comments.

By the way, my name is pronounced Lynn, and my avatar is an ink painting I created on rice paper years ago. The symbol means PLAY - something I have finally learned to do in later years and poetry is definitely my favorite form of play.

TOP TEN - A CHALLENGE

Blog Posted by Line Gauthier: 4/7/2020 10:07:00 AM

Hello everyone ~

First of all, I’d like to attribute this idea to John Watt. He proposed that it would be interesting to read every poet's 10 poems that most represent them or the 10 top poems they are the proudest of.

I wanted to give you a heads up that my next contest will be a challenge to come up with this list of 10 most representative poems. I will probably ask for a short comment (20 words max) as to why each is defining.

If you come up with your own list, it would make sense that you include it on your PoetrySoup bio page as you introduce yourself.

Many of us have been prolific and may in fact may have 50 or 100 defining poems ~ and from these you can narrow it down to the top ten. So you could in fact come up with a long list and a short list ~ wouldn’t it be meaningful to gather these for our own satisfaction and for posterity.

Hopefully this will keep your mind busy ~

Line, I finally finished my bio and took your advice to include my "representative poems" for those wishing to know where to start. Couldn't narrow it down to 10, but I selected 8 categories and chose 2 poems to represent each category. I will endeavor to pare that down to 10 if you still plan on creating that challenge. Thanks again for this blog and challenge!

Line, I love this idea! That being said with all of the enthusiasm of a December child. Looking forward to this contest. It will be quite an undertaking for you. Thank you for your willingness to propose this idea.

Even Libra poets? A Libra making a ten poem final decision - huh ... and wow to the how. I'll start pondering and balancing all fav ten factors now, well, after I conclude what those factors are, but you said your next contest? This is going to be sooooo challenging. Maybe I should bow out, or give it a go - I'll have to decide in order to know. Despite my issues this is a very generous, sweet and selfless undertaking, Line - I need not ponder thanking you, I know I am grateful. CayCay

I'll help you pick, Caycay. I'll give you a list of my fave poems of yours!! Even then, I'd have to narrow them down!!

The trouble is Line,my poetic development is ongoing, and what I would have chosen previously seems just a milestone on my journey.A bit like looking back to the 70's pics of my long hair, flower power ties and flares!

Sounds very interesting, Line! What a chore to narrow down all my poems to only ten!!! I can't even narrow down my top foods. heehee.

It's a huge job... but the benefits could be worth it.

I think this is a great idea. For me, one of Poetry Soup's strengths is also one of its weaknesses in that there are too many poems to choose from. Linking your defining Top 10 (or even Top 5) poems from your own bio and giving short reasons why you have chosen them, would be an excellent way of introducing people to your poetry. I'll hold my hand up and admit that I tend to read first those poems from people's lists that have had the most views - but this doesn't always provide a true reflection of their work.

So true - there are many buried treasures waiting to be discovered.

Wow Line, I'm so tickled that you would give me a shout out for this idea - though I imagine other poets have thought of it before me. How daunting it can feel when you go to a poet's homepage to check out a few of their writings, only to find out there are thousands to choose from! Great to see you posted this blog... looking forward to seeing your contest and hearing from other interested folks!
