Listening to your own poetry

Blog Posted by Barry Stebbings: 10/19/2016 4:00:00 AM

What do people think about listening to their own poetry read aloud by another person. I would appreciate hearing another voice and perhaps different interpretation. We are having this discussion at the momen at my local PoetryWriting Group. Some others would find this 'difficult'. What do people think?

Barry, it is amazing to listen to your own poetry read by another person. I get together with a friend and I will read one of my poems to her and then she reads it to me...and I am left breathless and even in shock that I wrote that poem..so my answer is definitely YES

Thank you, BW. I am trying to encourage my local Poetry Writing Group to read each other's work (for those who want to). I think it would be an interesting experience.

Barry, I have also had someone put my words to music. And for me, THAT was an amazing experience, but only because he is an amazing singer, and he created a lovely melody, and put it to awesome music. But if someone had taken my words and made a horrible song with a bad singing voice, it would not have been such a great experience LOL So I guess we have to be careful whom we allow to use our words, whether in reading or in songwriting.

I have a long answer :) ok, the first experience I had with this was when one of my poems (in the style of Poe) won a contest here and the prize was that the host (The Seeker, below me here lol) read it on his SoundCloud. At first it was weird for me to hear my poem being read by someone else... it didn't quite sound like I had imagined it in my mind … But it grew on me and I ended up loving it :) He has a very unique (cool) voice lol So then he had another contest and I was thrilled to have him read my Dr Seuss-style poem out loud, he did an amazing job :) I think to have someone else read your poem, you have to be willing to “let go” of your poem… I mean, let go of your expectations and allow someone else to read it in the way they interpret it. And yes, I think that can be hard to do, especially if it is personal to you. I was ok with letting my Poe and Seuss poems go, but my more personal ones, I want to be the one reading them, so they are heard in the way that I wrote them (if that makes sense)

Thank you for your reply Becca. I will follow up the suggestion from TS below. I agree that it is a process of letting go but I think it is the same with a song writer using an orchestra and arranger to present their songs.

I think I would not like it, as the other person wouldn't necessarily know the parts of the poem to be stressed.

Barry...You asked us "what do people think?" You did not specify that we had to have the *experience* of having our poem read by someone else.

Thank you, Julia. I know not everybody would like it and others have said the same as you. I am more interested in the experience than the performance.
