L. Milton Hankins R.I.P.

Blog Posted by Tom Cunningham: 12/28/2022 4:13:00 AM

I'm sorry to be the bearer of sad news but I've just found out that our good friend L. Milton Hankins has passed away. I know he made many friends on here and was very supportive to others.

He died on the 22nd December 2022 in a hospital in West Virginia where he was originally from .

May He Rest In Peace.

I've found the link to the funeral home who are taking care of funeral arrangements for Milton's family.

There you can leave a personal message for the family and I'm sure it would bring them some comfort knowing how much he was liked and admired and what a warm and friendly man Milton was.

Tom I learnt about his passing this morning and was deeply saddened and shocked! I only know Milton through these pages but I feel I knew him personally for many years! He always read and would share his views and compliment poets. I had a message from him not so long back! This is so unexpected and sad! But his last poem says a final good bye! Perhaps he knew!! Rest in peace friend Milton! You will be remembered by many for many years!

Milton in my mind was a happy whale because he was enormous and had an admiring presence, and it tears me apart when I imagine looking out in the horizon he's no longer there. I join with others here at soup in offering my deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and friends.

Milt, My Friend - You were one of the first people to ever encourage me here, and you were always supportive and kind - I will not forget that, your irrepressible spirit, or your uniquely descriptive poems. You will be missed, my friend … may angels’ wings carry you peacefully to slumber. Much Love & Respect, Gregory Richard Barden - “the bard”

Hello Tom, Milton passed away!? He never said he was sick. Did he suffer from cancer? A bad heart? Or was it just his time to go? I am shocked! Thank you for letting us know Tom. It is sad news.

Once again, a very sad bit of news from the Soup! So soon after his celebration of his 81st birthday and the vacation he was so looking forward to. He was such a supportive force on the site and there was so much wisdom in his poetry. I noticed his absence but assumed that he was still away and maybe not able to post. I’m still reeling from Rico’s passing and this just makes me feel even sadder. Thank you for posting this, Tom…

Milt was a fine, fine man who supported and encouraged so many poets at this site. His tent was big, and he welcomed those from all cultures, belief systems, and walks of life into his circle of friends and poetry mates. He truly enjoyed the camaraderie at PS and passionately immersed himself into all aspects of our poetry family: writing, commenting, posting blogs, sponsoring contests; always encouraging others to write their stories. For all this, I salute him and mourn his passing. Tom, though the news is sad, we appreciate your post so we can grieve and honor the memory of Milt.

Awful, awful news. I see Milt as one of the best friends I never met. I always knew when something I wrote would appeal to Milt, and he was always gracious enough to say so when it did. Im struggling with that last poem ‘I Need A Vacation’, with hindsight, it ends almost as (and has become) a final farewell. Can’t help asking myself if that’s simply sheer coincidence or something deeper. Will miss his presence, his comments and his poetry. Sleep well, Milt.
