I like others on here like to sometimes add a photo to my work, I know it does not improve the content of a poem but maybe helps with the imagery. I do avoid using pictures that are watermarked or where permission is required or even those that say this image maybe subject to copy write. But I couldn't help thinking that maybe we could be on dodgy ground. I would gladly put the photographers name against it if I knew who had taken the picture. The last thing I would do is 'steal' someone else's work. I have no problem if someone wanted to use one of my poems as long as they leave my name against it and not try and claim it as theirs. Does anyone have an understanding about what we can or can't use. Also does anyone know if its possible to put your own photos against your work as when I've tried to do it a red X comes up but that does not happen when copying the image url off the internet.

Hi Peter When you submit a poem there's a box below and what looks like a house symbol. Click that and open another tab, chose picture you want and click copy, now go back and click that symbol and another box opens, click in the box and the url ( the file name of the picture) will appear, click ok and at the bottom click update poem. Good luck. Tom

If an artist's name is given of course I add it; but, just to be safe, if it is not I just add the url to the site from which it came underneath the picture. ;)

Thank you Shadow, that is sound advice as it lets the reader know where it has originated from. Tom

I am unable to add personal photos. NO matter what I try, they either do not post or if they are from facebook, they disappear. I have to use from "images" I figure they are there for the public unless earmarked in a way we can tell we are not supposed to use them! I wish Soup made it easier for me to put my personal pictures here.

Andrea, have you tried uploading your pictures to a website and then copying the url? Facebook pics don't work for me either. Actually, it is not safe to assume that anything that comes up as "images" can be reused; but you can click on "tools" and select "usage rights" to find out.

Well said Andrea, I too would like to use personal photos and get as far as copying the picture url and then either gets red X or a small square that is about 4mm x 4mm and is blank. I'm like a dog with a bone, if I crack it I'll let you know. Others have offered suggestions so I'll try those. Tom

I always use my own photos. I upload them to my personal website and copy the url. You can also search for images and limit the search to ones that are licensed for reuse (in chrome, go to tools, usage rights). Any image that is in the public domain can be reused for non commercial use.

Thank you Agnes, that seems a very safe way as I certainly do not want to use images I'm not supposed too. Tom

Tom - The way I use my own photos is to either put them on FB or Google/Picasa first, then copy the URL As far as copyright infringement, I try to find credits with the pics I use, but they rarely have any when taken off the internet ... I know quite a bit about music copyright, (as I am a publisher with ASCAP), but not so much photos. Hope I've helped a bit.

You're right, Andrea, some of the old FB photos do disappear ... I almost always just do a Google image search and just copy and paste, (not even using the URL), but for my own photos I save them onto Google/Picasa, then copy the URL or copy and paste. Sometimes I'll edit first with Picasa Image Edit, but most of the time I just copy and paste from Image Search, and if I use gifs, then I just "Copy Image Location" then put in the URL. I love using gifs, but they take more memory, and not everyone can view them.

FB did not work for me. Over time, they vanished.

Thank you very much for your information Gregory, as you say not many have credits attached which is a shame as there are some stunning photos out there and I'd only be too happy to put their name to it. Tom
