This has has been a good day. We saw the movie La La Land. It brings back memories of the great musicals of the past.. but in a contemporary setting. The female role is certainly updated from the musicals that I watched as an impressionable teenaager. I'm talking about musicals like: Three Coins in a Fountain and Student Prince and Sound of Music and Music Man and South Pacific. The theme of what success is and isn't is an ongoing theme for both the male and female roles.
Cauthion-- There is a spoiler here. I just finished A Dogs Journey. The themes are adult in nature. What remains with me is the phrase, "Good Dog'. The hero sighs as she slips away. I am a good dog. I served my boy well. I did my best. She is content and peaceful. Being raised a Catholic, there was an emphasis on mortal and venial sins and how many of each you committed. Occasionally I bend under Catholicism's hair shirt. I couldn't help but think as I finished the book, "Perhaps dying is as simple as this. Perhaps we don't need to count and fret over each grievance and injustice received and committed. Perhaps we can simply say, I did my best. I was the best mother (father etc) that I could be. I forgive and I ask forgiveness. I love and I was loved.
