comma, comma, e. cumm.a, Doveglion---> (a lazy piknik blog)

Blog Posted by Kabuteng P.Ink K.: 7/26/2016 11:43:00 AM

Some have cool cafés, some have fun pubs and bars and bistros. Mine's a lazy piknik.

Although yep, I  am serious about this being a lazy blog. Since I will just be posting a link here about José Garcia Villa and his connection with e.e. cummings. I found it to be quite a fascinating read (8 pages) http://faculty.gvsu.edu/websterm/cummings/Cowen10.pdf

and another link about a commentary on the aphorisms of these 2 poets (10 pages) http://faculty.gvsu.edu/websterm/cummings/cowen17.pdf

José  Garcia Villa is known for his reversed consonance rhyme scheme (see I am really lazy, I don't even want to explain right now what it is but in his words, it is :

The last sounded consonants of the last syllable, or the last principal consonant of a word, are reversed for the corresponding rhyme. Thus, a rhyme for near would be run; or rain, green, reign.”

He is also known as the Comma Poet (hmmm to some, reading his comma poems can be quite maddening, but I have to admit, that for me, it did intrigue me to a certain extent, so as to include some wee bit of profusion of commas in a few lines of my stuff. He highlighted the importance of this punctuation mark, and even likened to his technique to Seurat's pointillism. I'm REALLY really lazy to discuss this now in my own words, so if you are intrigued by it, please do read up on it more. Thank you.

So what's the point of this 'piknik' of mine? Hmm, maybe just to sort of put a spotlight on him... eep sorry, I know I am doing a sucky job of it. But still, better now than never.

Before I forget, his penname was Doveglion (dove, eagle, lion) -- to him, the portrait of a poet is described as "gentle as a dove, free as an eagle and fierce as a lion"

Here's something from his "The Anchored Angel"

And, lay, he, down, the, golden, father,
     (Genesis', fist, all, gentle, now)
Between, the, wall, of, China, and,
The, tiger, tree, (his, centuries, his,
     Aerials, of, light) —
     Anchored, entire, angel!
He, in, his, estate, miracle, and, living, dew,
His, fuses, gold, his, cobalts, love,
     And, in, his, eyepits,
     under, the, liontelling, sun —
The, zeta, truth — the, swift, red, Christ.

     The, red-thighed, distancer, swift, saint,
     Who, made, the, flower, principle,
     The, sun, the, hermit's, seizures,
And, all, the, saults, zigzags, and,
     Sanskrit, of, love.
     Verb-verb, noun-noun:
Light's, latticer, the, angel, in, the, spiderweb:
By, whose, espials, from, the, silk, sky,
     From, his, spiritual, ropes,
     With, fatherest, fingers, lets, down,
Manfathers, the, gold, declension, of, the, soul.

Crown, Christ's, kindle, Christ! Or, any, he,
Who, builds, his, staircase, fire —
And, lays, his, bones, in, ascending,
     Fever. Verb-verb, king's, spike — who, propels,
     In, riddles! Six-turbined,
     Deadlock, prince. And, noun,
Of, all, nouns: inventor, of, great, eyes: seesawing,
Genesis — unfissured, spy: His, own, Arabian,
     his, love-flecked, eye!
The, ball, of, birth, the, selfwit, bud,
So, birthright, lanced, I, hurl, my, bloodbeat, Light.

And, watch, again, Genesis', phosphor, as,
     Blood, admires, a, man. Lightstruck,
     Lightstruck, into, the, mastertask,
No, hideout, fox, he, wheels, his, grave, of,
     Burning, and, threads, his,
     Triggers, into, flower: laired,
In, the, light's, black, branches: the, food, of,
Light, and, light's, own, rocking, milk.
     But, so, soon, a, prince,
     so, soon, a, homecoming, love,
Nativity, climbs, him, by, the, Word's, three, kings.

     — Or, there, ahead, of, love, vault, back
And, sew, the, sky, where, it, cracked!
And, rared, in, the, Christfor, night,
Lie, down, sweet, by, the, betrayer, tree,
     To-fro, angel! Hiving, verb!
First, lover, and, last, lover, grammatiq:
Where, rise, the, equitable, stars, the, roses, of, the, Zodiac,
And, rear, the, eucalypt, towns, of, love:
     — Anchored, Entire, Angel:
Through, whose, huge, discalced, arable, love,
Bloodblazes, oh, Christ's, gentle, egg: His, terrific, sperm.

and a couple of his Xocerisms (aphorisms):

To read between the lines is Logic.

To read between the lines when there are no lines is Imagination

[and] Reason is merely connecting the dots but intelligence is the creation of those dots

he has a Twitter page (I have NO idea who created it)

Since again, this is my lazy blog, I won't even say right now my thoughts on this. But in any case any of you would want to give your thoughts on this particular poem, please feel free to discuss. Thank you. Hopefully, I can drop by and join in the discussion. This blog of mine is turning out to be soo promising :p ---- .

On the other hand, I think I would also understand if nobody comments or would want to discuss it, given how lazy I've been here. Oops. I'm just being kinda weird, posting this now. I kind of hate myself for some reason for not expounding too much about this (haha imagine how loong this would be if I actually did!!), knowing how I could maybe do a more in-depth discussion, but yes I am lazy (insert your sigh of mega-relief here).

Also just putting it out there-- next time I want to blog about commas again,,,,,,,,

Corny me also of course had to put this (for those checking out this blog, some of you prolly saw this coming, me including this?) Of course, I had to put this in!! Presenting--- Culture Club's Karma Chameleon :D

Well I finally made it all the way through his poem and I have to say it was a tedious process doing so. I do admit, I like his idea of the comma usage but only to a point. Not after every word. Phrases, such as "the wall of China", I believe, should be kept together. I am off to read his bio. Thanks Nikko for the blog.

You honed in on something that struck me as well when I read that part, Tim. Thank you for highlighting that here.

The poet, for Cummings, is merely the type of the true man, and all true men are poets: men who can see with clear eyes, feel with unconditioned emotions, and love without fear; men who are whole, entire, and alive . . . . As the world goes, he and such like are ‘anyones’ and ‘noones’ as opposed to the important ‘someones’ and ‘everyones’”

Hi again Tim :)! I agree with you about liking his idea of using the comma, but yes, only to a certain extent. That's cool though how you really tried to read through the entire poem, thank you! I'm glad though that this blog was able to pique some interest in Jose Garcia Villa and his poetry. Thank you very much for reading!

Hi Charma :)! I am glad that you enjoyed reading his bio and it's so nice to know that you have...Admittedly, the profusion of commas can be off-putting, but then again for me, it did somehow truly made me think and pause to a certain extent... I think you got it right about what you say about his comma usage,-- there is a certain deeper meaning to it methinks, and I love what you say about pausing again and again to feel the words. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank, you, karam, for, passing, by :) and also for sharing what you feel about Jose Garcia Villa. I think I read somewhere how it's either you love him or you hate him...his use of commas sure can be overwhelming!

I'm sorry, nikko, I could not even finish reading his poem. Such butchery with punctuation is a really big turn off for me!! Kind of makes me throw up in my mouth a little!! you like that kind of stuff? I love you anyway, my sweet friend!!

Thank you for coming back here, Andrea :)! That's ok if you didn't finish his poem--I really just wanted to give him some attention in a blog. Admittedly, I didn't also finish reading some his poems the first time I tried reading them. But I kind of forced myself to, and when I did, somehow, I got around it. It's kind of an enigma and for me, it intrigues me how he thought of it, and his mindset. Oddly, and I have to agree to a certain extent, (sorry rambling here)-- if one were to take away some of the commas in some of the lines, it actually would make less sense! Amazingly, somehow the commas , in some weird way help to give more sense to the lines. Sorry am I making sense? Haha, I love your honesty though, oopsy I didn't mean for you to throw up :P.

As soon as I saw your blog title that song jumped into my mind. Very interesting this comma, dare I say, phenomenon. I read the first verse and had a hard time trying to figure out if he wanted us to pause after each word. I will come back in a bit to delve more into this.

Hi Tim :)! Thanks for passing by and for planning to come back...in answer to your question, yes I believe that was part his intent, to allow for further digestion of each word, to slow down the pace of the poem. OK, admittedly, my title is a spin-off of that lyric...
