I wonder if Ai accepts critique without becoming outraged, only time will tell. Good to see you around Roy.

Roy, you have given an interesting blend of current technology and poetry. Will it intimidate people to think that a program can write better than they? I hope not.

it's nice to see a blog on here that's actually about poetry! lol the villanelle is probably my favourite, but to me they all lack originality and imagery..how often have you read similar pieces? but then again, it's difficult at the best of times to write about love or death without falling into cliche

I would think it could do shape very well because it is structured, where Haiku would totally fail except perhaps with some lame 5-7-5 attempt without any substance.

Welcome back, Roy. Interesting blog. Some lines almost sound familiar. I wonder if AI is sourcing existing poetry lines from the millions to be found on the internet. But having said that, it's offerings sound a bit like a psychopath telling you that he loves you. Convincing in content and accurate in structure, but lacking the ache of genuine feelings. Remember the old song, Love Hurts?

Write free verse poetry Here's a free verse poem: The world is a canvas, painted with shades of light and dark. Brushstrokes of joy and sorrow, forming a masterpiece of the heart. A symphony of laughter and tears, the beat of life pulsing within. An endless rhythm, year after year, a never-ending song to begin. From the mountains to the seas, the beauty of nature all around. The colors and textures that we please, a tapestry of peace to be found. So let us dance in this work of art, with every step and every beat. For in this world, we each play a part, in this symphony of life, complete. Sorry ChatGPT, nice try, but can’t stick to it.

Roy, agreed - we are often drawn into this same black hole of boring redundancy and garden of cliche's, where we have to say STOP...!

Love it! This blog is conceptual provocation, of which we have too few. My feelings are that a computer is not ready yet to capture emotion and is only two dimentional and sophomoric. That is why it cannot do free verse well because it can't move away from mathematical structure. A computer can't "love" and that is the most important human emotion from which all others evolve. The quaterns and the villanelle are solid in form but lack that other dimension. Ironically though, with the fixed structure of the Limericks it does much better, however not perfect. It falls off the proper meter count a few times but is close enough and, truth be told, would be leading my contest right now.

I cannot disagree with that Craig. The irony is I wrote a vent on the change in writing, mine included, after spending a good portion of a day reading poems... did not post it of course.

Flo, totally agree, but then most of the population (not saying it's bad) enjoy poetry that's more like a Hallmark card. which these read like and therefore serve their purpose. The poem about death is an excellent average write and is all most desire and why it is often difficult for many of us to move away from telling to more creative showing."Don't tell me the moon is shining, show me the glint of light on broken glass" ~ Chekov (None of these do that).

Craig there is no disagreeing with your point that they cannot love, nor feel emotion of any kind, but I'm sure you've read the poetry that wins contests in different magazines, on 'writing' sites... even some that receive national accolades. And they read with less emotion and depth than the ones generated above. Hence my apprehension. I have wondered the emotional age of those judging various works of writing for a while now. Have you not?

There are no Limericks that have moved to round #2 because of improper meter or content or both, but this example would have.

I once read a theory that stated "if you place an infinite number of monkeys in front of an infinite number of typewriters(now computer keyboards) they would eventually write all the great works of literature." We've now gone one up on the monkeys.

I just tried this. Not so well. It doesn’t get free verse and made rhyming poetry.

The Fiddler and the Frog one is awesome, Roy, even the others are quite good, this is going to be quite a challenge for us poets...

Hello there old friend, it is great to see you here. Well Roy, to be honest, it is a bit disturbing how good these are. 'Cliche' or not, it is what people seem to identify with. Not only do these read as if human, but the site would likely have all the words of the English language at its disposal to fit into whatever format or meter required. How do we distinguish between a person's talent and another's ability to request a poem from the computer? How do you feel about it?

I agree Roy, especially with the importance in poetry seeming to shift more to how perfectly a poem is formatted as opposed to the content. Of course it will always be a matter of perspective. But the majority perspective feels different than it once did.

Flo, I truly don't see a challenge in these compared to quality writing. These are simple and predictable and not the least passionate - much like a cyborg might respond. I feel very confident that a computer can replicate true passion without being discovered...much like a phony lover--at least for me--yet many humans have been successful in a similar pursuit!

It’s clear that it will be hard to distinguish. I also think it likely that it will be used just as I illustrated. It’s certainly going to be a disruptive technology to creative writing.

Welcome back, Roy: That is actually amazing. Does that mean that many poets write from logic and not inspiration. What is the difference between poems that are worked on logically and poems that just come through from nowhere? I am worried this poem will win Craig’s contest LOL SuZ

Sorry. I did not enter it in the contest. I just had it write one using his rules. However, though these poems are not outstanding, I suspect that writing more sophisticated requirements would likely render much better output.
