Off the bat, I’m not a writer who follows form. I find other forms ridiculous at some moments. I do free verse, most of the time. Sometimes I dabble on other types but this is what I’m really asking myself:

Why would you restrict yourself to form?

Doesn’t that really hinder the message of your poem?

I understand the concepts of certain types of poetry like didactic, or classical and things of that nature. But what I don’t understand is the A-B-B-A, 5 syllables in every other line or the poem has to end in one syllable. I just don’t get it.

I was thinking, well perhaps people write in strict forms because of the discipline and the difficulty of it all. Or maybe some people like structure. Who knows?

Take for example, Alliteration. Granted, I’ve seen some good ones, but most of the time it rarely makes sense.

Rhyme sometimes detracts from the power of the poem. I understand if it’s just a light poem, then whatever, it’s cute sometimes. Maybe limericks or something. But when I see it in serious poetry, it sometimes makes it not so formidable.

I should be more open, but it’s not like I HAVEN’T tried other forms. I just prefer free verse. The point of this blog though, is for my fellow Soupers to show me the light.

If you DO write in forms like a Fibonacci or a double dactyl, please tell me why. I’m serious, I want to know why. Does it give you a special satisfaction that you could fill in the blank? I’m not being malicious, I just honestly want to know why.

I'm like you Bella...I prefer free verse. I just let it flow over the page and see what appears. But I admit I also like to challenge myself and write particular styles. I find haiku & senryu fascinating works. There are times I will write something freely only to discover I have written it in style. All beauty is in the eye of the beholder...including poetry. Peace!

Hey Bella, for me it's kind of like an artist who paints, choosing between oils, watercolor, or line drawings. It has nothing to do with being flamboyant, but gives an additional way to add substance and depth to poetry. Syllable counts and rhymes in poetry is like brush strokes in painting. I enjoy all kinds. Cheerio, Ruby

I don't want to become to predictable with my writing so I like to shake things up once in awhile....sometimes it works and other times it does not. How are we to grow as writers if we do not constantly challenge ourselves and our styles? Great blog Bella, take care Crystal

I have been a free verse writer almost exclusively. Until recently when I discovered Diminished Hexaverse, I love the tight format.....it eleminates "filler" words and it delivers a more powerful message. I rarely rhyme as it has to be perfect to my ears or else I just think its sounds forced and will leave the reader chuckling at my writing (which most of the time is not the affect I am going for) It is a personal preference mostly, I have tried Haiku's, senryu's, it all depends on my mood.

I never heard of free verse until I joined poetry soup. I wrote poetry in form just because that was what I was taught. I was impressed by some of the free verse which I read and decided to try it. I always was part rebel in school (they did have schools when I was a kid, a large cave) and I really enjoy the fre in free verse. Besides we have such talented young ladies to inspire us. Have a great day, Bella. Vince

Honestly, for me Bella, it is simply fun to try and do different forms of poetry. It is sometimes difficult to get your emotions into a strict structure I agree, but I look at it this way, if I don't enjoy trying, I don't do it. I also see it as a challenge and a brain exercise, if you know what I mean. I enjoy and respect all forms of poetry, and I say do what ever makes you happy, and respect those who do the same. Love, Shar

bella...i'm like you,as i always stick to free flow, and will attempt some shorty forms at times...but,for me,as i can't say for others, forms can become restricting to the process of the thought portrayed...but,everything that surrounds us is mathematical and geometric in nature,so in "form" poetry, the written verse is a reflection of nature,in form and in sound....with me...i feel,so i write what i feel as i see it within and the outer world......peace bella girl , jay
