WHO REALLY DISCOVERED AMERICA? - Keith Trestrail's Blog

I am an International Man of Mystery - born in Trinidad, raised in New Zealand, and living in Australia. My earliest influences lyrically were those of the Calypsonians of the 1960s, the greatest being old Birdie himself the Mighty Sparrow as well as the joyful songs of The Merrymen. Later in my teens I was struck by the power of words and language from the mercurial pen of Bob Dylan. The first poem I ever wrote was in 1975 at the age of 14 for a class assignment. I copied the lyrics from the Pink Floyd song "Money" and got a great mark from my teacher, Mrs Laird. She congratulated me on my effort and creativity (something I possessed very little of in school) and so I eventually came clean and had to re-write it. She did commend me on my honesty and choice of lyric though and did what good teachers do...engage and encourage. It could have been worse - I nearly chose a Frank Zappa song that would have been highly inappropriate! My poetry is very much like me - a work in progress! I often revisit and revise my catalogue as I grow as a writer and am grateful for any constructive advice. The real writer and talent in my family is my wife who is more an author than a poet, but she is far too sensible to bare her soul to the world. I, however, am not! I love my golf, my cricket and my Rugby League (that's a similar sport to Rugby for all my non-European/Australasian readers) and support Russell Crowe's team, the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian NRL (National Rugby League). Go the Bunnies and go the Cowboys!

WHO REALLY DISCOVERED AMERICA?

Blog Posted:1/26/2020 6:25:00 AM

CALLING ALL AMERICANS AND HISTORY ENTHUSIASTS.

WHAT WERE YOU TAUGHT IN SCHOOL?

I was having a discussion with my son who is a history buff over a wee dram. When I posed the question who was the first non-indigenous person credited with having discovered America we kinda hit a wall. I was taught at school many years ago now that Columbus discovered the New World which I assumed meant he landed and went ashore somewhere on mainland USA but there seems to be some doubt surrounding that. I know Columbus is credited as the first European to discover islands in the Caribbean (including my own of Trinidad & Tobago on his 3rd voyage) but surely those islands can't be considered the New World? My son suggested perhaps the Vikings (I know they had settlements in Newfoundland) but not in the US. I believe Cortez discovered Mexico and Cartier discovered Canada but did Columbus actually discover mainland USA or not? If so, where did he land? If not, then who did?

Okay, thank you all. I think it's pretty clear Columbus never set foot on US soil or anywhere else on the North American continent other than Honduras and Nicaragua so I guess that is considered the New World. Okay, not fake news but he sure as hell didn't discover America - he discovered the Americas. I shouldn't be surprised at written records - the pages of history are littered with fake news!

Columbus, never set foot on US soil...Ponce de Leon, Florida, circa 1513.

I'd never heard of him but he seems to have as much claim as the next - certainly more than Columbus.

History says Christopher Columbus, but is that an absolute certainty? It's a really difficult question to answer accurately. I do know that America was named after the Italian explorer and navigator, Amerigo Vespucci

The mystery continues...
Date: 1/26/2020 6:00:00 PM
this argument could go on and on but what I find really funny is there are a few islands within 90 to 120 miles off the coast of Florida and the people living there never knew there was a land mass which is now called North and South America so close...until some dudes from Europe showed up in a boat...which tends to explain the anthropological mindset of their current group thinking...some believe the Clovis people crossed across from Europe using the ice packs from 12 to 13 thousand years ago...they have found Clovis arrow heads dating from that period in the US and they are the only ones who made this particular arrow head...

Yeah, and there's some suggestion the Chinese did as well but it's hard to seperate fact from fiction.

I always heard the vikings had come upon it long ago. The Book of Mormon tells a story I'm not sure many are aware of! I think Columbus landed in other parts of the new world. Just saw google, it was the Bahamas. He opened the door to other Europeans of his time exploring the many other parts of the Americas.

he accidentally stumbled upon it on his way to India, which is why they started referring to native americans as Indians. Whether or not he set foot on Florida (which is near Bahamas) I am not sure. but I suppose that Europeans started getting interest because of his having stumbled onto something that was new to them at that time.

So did Columbus actually ever set foot in America or did he just prove the existence of a New World for others to explore?
Date: 1/26/2020 5:06:00 PM
I need another dram! I'm still in the dark. Forget about indigenous peoples, that's not my question. Why is Columbus credited as having been the first European to discover America? And what evidence is there to support that claim?

CC is credited cos he had the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria which was easy for school kids to remember and apparently the Spanish were better at promoting their written history.

You don't discover something if you're already there. Discover means to find something by searching or in the process of searching something else. Who owns or has the right to something is a totally separate issue that could actually be argued to infinity without an answer including those called "native". Some sad soul discovered Niagara Falls because he/she was paddling down the wrong river. No one truly knows who was "where" first because prehistoric is exactly that (no one knows). There was no morality in the "survival of the fittest" days and each evolution is no more or less blameless than its predecessor except for our more "civilized" moral conscience - guilt be damned - Eric the Red

It seems Cabot landed somewhere on the east coast believed to be in Canada which he claimed for the British crown that sanctioned his expedition.

Forget the word "discover". Who was the first white dude to set foot on American soil?
Date: 1/26/2020 1:40:00 PM
Keith, I do not know about the USA but in Canada, in my opinion the Aboriginal people discovered Canada, how they actually got here is very fuzzy but they were here long before any European set foot on this so called new land (to steal, and starve them, kill them off with small poxes and put them in reservations where many still live) _Constance

Agreed, there was killing on both sides, but the Aboriginal first nation people were just trying to save their land, defend their people, and keep the right to hunt and live in peace- just my opinion _Constance

All true, Constance, but as my son pointed out, the native tribes used to steal and starve and raid and kill each other as well. It wasn't all peace and harmony before European settlement.

wow! Dundee has become an archaeological blogger! I am currently working on a new hypothesis I have submitted in poetry form to the educational institutionalized powers that be...if I get funded, promise you'll come along as my main grave digger? "There once was a Japanese dude, who felt the samurais were so rude, he fashioned a boat, paddled the great moat..He never ran out of seafood!" What do you think? Should we go ahead and take applications for the main paddler? I am very hopeful we will get funded by Japan. They pay better than any other countries out there trying to lay claim to that historical fame. Ok, now back to what I should have been doing until you distracted me! Darn it Flashy!

Seems a bit extreme. Don't you have death duties? The government will tax you whether you are dead or alive. Don't forget to say goodbye before you head off to the South Seas. Funny thing, I was just watching Castaway last night. You're not flying FedEx I hope? Better take a volleyball just in case! Lol

Hi

My son also mentioned that two Spanish conquistadors by the name of Vasquez Coronado and Hernando de Soto can be credited as having led the first expeditions through what is now the United States (up to what is now Kansas and Nebraska) from colonial Mexico in the early 16th century. Any thoughts?

I don't think it was ever "discovered", (just my bizarre personal perspective) - there have been indigenous peoples here since about 40,000 years ago, (evidence gets sketchier from there), so was that population from elsewhere, or do we just lose track then? And if it's referring to "civilization", what exactly defines that word? I'd say it's probably a moot point and beyond any exacting conclusion, but it's ALWAYS fun to conjecture, of course! ;o)

Most scientific evidence (and books) trace humanity back about 40K on this continent, so I guess "discovered" is a matter of perspective. There may have been other cultures who came here via sailing craft in the "modern" age of man, but there were already humans here. Semantics, I guess ... like most things. ;-)

But the history books tell us different.
Date: 1/26/2020 7:24:00 AM
Modern wisdom (whatever that means nowadays :)) ) holds with the Viking-theory. Those days, it might have been more a case of crop failures due to 'climate changes' which motivated people like the Vikings to look for greener pastures (as they did when they invaded England in waves - even during the Roman occupation). But, when it came to occupation with the eye on plundering ... various countries sponsored the expiditions, eg Raleigh ... ...
