Dr. Ivan Edwards is a medical doctor, ordained minister, writer, poet, humanitarian, and senior officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. His career spans medicine, ministry, literature, military service, and community advocacy, each role building upon the other to form a multidimensional legacy.
Medical Career
He earned his medical degree from Midwestern University after completing undergraduate studies at Rivier University. He interned at Eastern Virginia Medical School before specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and later advanced his expertise as a flight surgeon at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. Board-certified in PM&R, he is the CEO and founder of Jovana Rehabilitation Medicine & Pain in San Antonio, Texas, where his practice emphasizes neurorehabilitation, comprehensive pain management, and a holistic approach to restoring patients to optimal function and well-being.
Ministry
Dr. Edwards is also an ordained minister, having served as pastor of two churches: one in Uganda (1981–1988) and another in New Hampshire during the 1990s. His ministry background continues to inform his humanitarian work and his emphasis on resilience, healing, and cultural reflection.
Literature and Poetry
As a writer and poet, Dr. Edwards has authored numerous articles and literary works. His poetry has been featured in Words That Heal (Poets Choice), and in May 2025 he published his debut collection, Resonance of the Soul – Flowers and Harmonics. The book was met with critical acclaim, earning 4 stars from Readers’ Favorite and 5 stars from Literary Titan, and in September 2025 it received the Literary Titan Gold Book Award. The collection sold strongly and resonated widely with readers for its raw language, vivid imagery, and heartfelt authenticity. In November 2025, the Uganda Poetry Society established the Dr. Ivan Edwards Poetry Award, an annual prize named in his honor to celebrate excellence in poetry.
Military Service
Finally, Dr. Edwards is a senior officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, serving as a Lieutenant Colonel and Flight Surgeon. His military role integrates aerospace medicine with resilience-focused care, complementing his civilian medical practice.
Humanitarian and Community Engagement
Dr. Edwards is deeply engaged in humanitarian efforts, supporting educational programs for orphaned and displaced children in Uganda. He has worked extensively with veterans across hospitals in San Antonio and regularly led Resilience Symposiums (2019–2021), tying together his expertise across medicine, military service, literature, and faith.
