Moving On

Blog Posted by Craig Cornish: 8/20/2025 10:15:00 AM

Those who built buggies and those that built buggy whips could have transitioned to building cars,, instead, most of them asked congress to pass laws to make it more difficult for auto makers to compete with them - how'd that work out? We no longer write with goose quills and many don't write with anything except a keyboard and some just with spoken word. As time flies, we have a choice to fight the inevitable or travel, however reluctantly, with the future wind. AI is here to stay and grow - period. It is smarter, more dynamic, more malleable and more "perfect" than we, yet "perfect" when it comes to writing is its weakness. It is in our imperfections and flaws that we find the beauty of humanity and its art. We don't need to spend efforts to try and fool it, because it will find us hiding in predictable places. I say, be vulnerable and unpredictable - be fun and silly and then suddenly in tears, both happy and sad. Don't worry about charlatans, real or imagined, or you will accomplish their goal for them. 'Tis not form nor any complexity that will save us from it, it is simply being fragile and human. If AI writes better than us it deserves the credit for "better" and conscience and honor will be a debt to pay now or later if you present its writing as your own.. As for me, I'm totally done worrying about something I can't control and I welcome the future and put my buggies in a museum!

Rob, you hold the Soup copyright on “mic drop”. I couldn’t have carried it off with the same gravitas anyway. Should I need to push home a point in future I am leaning towards “hoo-ah” from Scent of a Woman.

Actually Mate, yes, the more we learn, the more we discover how much we don't know - too many don't/won't accept that truth, and AI never will - it's an infinite mirror?

Brandy - Keith is not used to doing mic drops, so we will have to help him. I am also waiting for AI's first mic drop.

@ Keith, your statement holds truth and you're right about the mic drop, Rob.

You should have ended that statement with a [mic drop].

Yep. I wrote a blog last year - AI poetry, much ado about nothing. Moving on....

Moving on, yes but I don't believe it's nothing - I do believe that there's nothing we can do about it but our best.

Hi Craig, just letting you know that I moved on a long time ago. ' If AI writes better than us. ' What is better ? Who determines that ? We all write differently. A few like forms and others love free verse. Is one better than the other ? A computer is gathering words to create a poem. Hmmm, words we already know and use. This is called AI . . . I could have done that. You too. Oh, we all do. It's called * Poetry *

I do believe that AI has deduced that we have to go. We will become the buggies in the museum. I see no other path unless God intervenes. Like you mentioned, it is best not to worry about it and enjoy what time we have left.

Dear Rob -- I pray we're not hopeless, yet Hal has been preordained---yes, I'm on the backside anyway but...still hope for the rest?

I admire how you have written this, Craig, and yes, AI may improve our lives in many ways. But how does this resolve the dilemma for the poetry sponsors here at Poetry Soup or any other poetry site? Or for English and other teachers who need to grade compositions for tests that ensure the students have learned something? It creates an uneven balance between human thoughts and artificial mechanical ones, being judged on the same plane. Very worrisome to me.

Sage words, Craig. Being authentic is admirable. Starting out over a decade ago, I was told that if what I am writing can't be identified per a form, I am wasting my time. Then Di11y Da11y put me on the right track: who says poetry should have a label or name, or be progressive from beginning to end with a conclusion? Her example has set me free. Yes, I had fun over the years with the forms (long before AI), but running a contest with "Any form" poses its own unique problems. Thinking of various ways of expressing ourselves is honouring the poet and each one's unique voice. At least the class is dismissed and we can let our hair down here among soup friends. Thanks for your, blog.

Nicely said. It is what it is with AI. We cannot let ourselves be consumed with worry over its being used.
