"The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." — Madeleine L'Engle

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies...The man who never reads lives only one." —George R. R. Martin

"... there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people." — Vincent van Gogh

"And that's the whole poem," he said. "Do you like it, Piglet?"
"All except the shillings," said Piglet. "I don't think they ought to be there."
"They wanted to come in after the pounds," explained Pooh, "so I let them. It's the best way to write poetry, letting things come in."
— The House at Pooh Corner, A. A. Milne

JOY

               LET a joy keep you.
Reach out your hands
And take it when it runs by,
As the Apache dancer
Clutches his woman.
I have seen them
Live long and laugh loud,
Sent on singing, singing,
Smashed to the heart
Under the ribs
With a terrible love.
Joy always,
Joy everywhere—
Let joy kill you!
Keep away from the little deaths.

            Carl Sandburg

2025 Poetry Marathon Mile 1 Has Begun!

Blog Posted by Mark Toney: 7/31/2025 10:16:00 AM

The 2025 Poetry Marathon Mile 1 Contest has begun!

Every three years I sponsor a Poetry Marathon Contest. The first was in 2019 and the second in 2022. The following links will take you to the 2019 and 2022 overall top placements:

Again, congratulations to the 2019 and 2022 winners along with a special thank you to all who participated!

Now it’s time for the 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest!

A marathon has an official distance of 42.195 kilometers or 26.219 miles. The 2025 Poetry Marathon will consist of 27 contests. I decided to use miles instead of kilometers since I didn’t want to have 43 contests! Each of the first 26 contests will represent their respective mile (mile 1, mile 2, mile 3, etc.).

Marathons are brutal by nature. This Poetry Marathon will be no different. The first 26 contests will be Premiere Contests. Yikes! These Premiere contests can be brutal since only 10 of the 35 submitted poems can place in each contest. The 27th contest will be the Qualifier’s Final Placement contest, a Standard Contest to determine the sole winner of the marathon, plus the 2nd through 15th place overall winners!

The requirements are simple. Any form, any theme, new or old will do, up to a maximum of 42 lines. Why 42 lines? Because a marathon is also 42.195 kilometers. Ahhh, there’s method to my madness! Poets who place in the top ten during each contest will accumulate points toward the final. In other words, consideration will be given to overall performance. Updated standings will be published after the completion of Miles 5, 10, 15, and 20. Please see the Contest Description for complete details.

The 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest has already begun, and poets are writing poems for the first mile. Remember, this isn’t a sprint, it's a marathon. These Premiere contests can be brutal since only 10 of the 35 submitted poems can place in the contest. Be sure to pace yourselves and have fun along the way.

And remember the #1 rule for marathoners - FINISH!

Cheers!
