ICHABOD THE TURTLE

There once was a snapping turtle named Ichabod,
An intrepid soul, his legs lightning rods.
    Rabbits, he outpaced, left them confused,
    And with his speed, they were not amused. 
Oh how all the other turtles did applaud!

“You run like a Greek god!” they said agog.
“Why do you have

Turtle Sees the Coming Storm

Turtle is ancient, he speaks now and always
for the indigenous who have lost their voices.

By day, Turtle's form embellishes,
he sits outside of a Chinese restaurant
by the side of an ornamental pond.

The traffic creates a dusty coat on his
stone shell, yet his eyes are wide open,
they capture past and future
as the present cascades along.

He remembers the

The night was as thick as melted asphalt
when her prehistoric form
emerged like a monument
in the sand
and each egg that descended
spiked the air with the scent of birth,

or perhaps the knowledge
that, in minutes, she would abandon

Ancient traveler where the ocean hides.  
With a shell like armor, so strong and wise,  
She dances through currents, beneath the wide skies.

A journey of miles, through coral and foam,  
In the heart of the sea, she finds her home.
