Old Ironsides

massive oak timbers
hearty men piped to action
mighty war machine
planks resisted cannonballs
like our nation, still afloat

Big Apple Eve

I pictured her milking an udder
And it made my whole body shudder
Then mum piped up,
"Forget her, pup!
She's bound to be some buddy's mudder!"

I Have Dog Ears

dog ears I have
loud sounds are hell
heating duct blowers distract me
Ouch! Is that the sound of a bell?
music piped in puts me over the edge.
I am barely hanging onto insanity’s ledge.

Here Lies Timmy

Here lies Timmy, who loved shows on TV. Hear one right now being played. They are not being piped in for free. He had an eternity's worth prepaid. Sept. 16, 2018 for Jessie Rowe's "A Funny Epitaph" Poetry Contest

Christmas Has Arrived

Garlands at windows
American flay blowing softly
Giant bell with slick red bow
A lighted Christmas tree on the lawn
Snow on the roof waiting for Santa
Mistletoe over the door for Daddy
Silent night piped in softly
Christmas has arrived in all her splendor.

Cherished Moments

Destiny brought them extremely close,
Emotional flame highest arose,
Big tummies failed to kiss,
Cherished moments piped hiss,
Better obese as appetite froze !

Sunday

He reached out and took my hand.
Lingering warmth from the early morning
Flowed between us,
Bird song piped and twittered,
Gentle spring sunshine
Broke through the chill March wind.
By the edge of the canal
I placed one foot in front of the other
And my heart smiled.

Good Advice

She intended to have a face lift
on her wrinkled face,
because when she'd look in the mirror,
would frown and feel disgraced,
She just wanted to feel and look
more youthful and vibrant again,
when her husband suddenly
piped up and said,
"Well all's you have to do is grin!"

Dancing Ghost of a Curtain

delicate gauzy organza sheers
window dressing dancing in the bedroom
blown gently by forced air heat
piped in by silver register on floor
moving softly in a sensuous way
erotic dance of cosmic feelings
my wide awake eyes
overwhelmed by imagination
conjures up a dancing ghost

Old Elms In the Snow

Old Elms in the Snow

It snows this day
upon Your work.
The elms seem sad,
their bark wrinkled fingers
aimlessly appoint.

Piped in ermine, winter
ballerina limbs
take permanent position,
frozen supplicant or
petrified pirouette.

Winter grows still
my God.

The Hylander Way

One bonny day
I kilt me chicken,
Stirred eem inta me pot
For me soup to thicken.

I ate me some Haggis
An a scone or two,
After I kilt me cow
Ta make me stew.

Had ta put down me ol dog
Cause he kilt me ol cat,
Then I dug heem a hole
Way off in da back.

Den I picked up me pipes
And piped a sad lilt,
Wearing me ragged ol Tam
And me dusty ol kilt.

Lonely Hearts Cafe

She rounded up the lonely ladies from the building
Drove them for lunch at an outdoor terrasse
Dropped them at the entrance then circled and circled
Finally finding parking before rejoining the group
As she finally dropped in her seat letting out a sigh of joy

“What a most magnificent day!”

The old miserable bitties piped up in unison... “not bad”

All That Tinsel

Colored lights draped over elaborate wire trees
Festive wreaths dressed in ornaments to please
Christmas songs piped in, one after another
Outside a bell-ringer chirps, Merry Xmas, brother

Yet nearly every guest room's empty
Seems no one's checking in or out
No line at the front desk either
   There's hardly a soul about...

A hotel lobby's a lonely place Christmas Eve
   All that tinsel's a harlot's make-up, disbelieved

Is She a We a He Or a What

She came in loud and she came in strong.
How in the world could it be upsetting or wrong?
She’s a little strange one of the braver boys piped up.
I noted there was a photo of a steak on her coffee cup.

Carnivore was written in big red letters across her vest.
Besides a lion’s mane, she wore a dress across her chest.
Is she a he or a she or a we or a what? We wondered silently.
She was a stern teacher with no tolerance for laughter or glee

Grinding Start

I turned the key,
pressed the gas pedal.
The motor belched
the starter grated.

“No. Not today!
I can’t be late.
I’m teaching the class.
I have to be there!”

Our three-year-old
piped up from the back seat,

“Try it again, Mom.”

The motor coughed, caught,
settled to a steady purr.
My little two-cylinder Fiat,
slow, but steady as she goes,
took me everywhere.

Again, from the back seat,

“I knew it would start, Mom.
I prayed.”

Aloneness of Fire

He was asking for, at least,
a passive euthanasia.

Rage or hostility
was giving pain to phantom limbs.
Race puts forth,
a trembling version
of ethnic choice.
A piped dream
which never took off.

On middle of the road
a dragon rumbles,
hissing flames.
Something not on the left
not on the right.
Cannot keep the sky open.
Nothing moves now,
not even leaves of a lone tree.

There was a random cry
unheard in the aloneness of fire.

The Piper

the piper piped for African fox
it danced lightning strokes
rhythms and tones were loud
but refused to follow dance law

he sang music to snake
it opened its fangs instead
venom was sprayed in his eyes
divine grace made him see again

the piper in his amusement
never ever learned to think
he invited cranes for tea
they remained on the trees

He tried his luck with the hare
it came and sat on his laps
dancing and wriggling in joy
at the end all his estates went

What Is This Halloween Thing

I love your Halloween costumes! A little boy piped up.
Iggy laughed, and coffee spilled out of Giggy’s cup.
What is this Halloween thing? Giggy asked, wondering true.
They were aliens from Planet X6, these odd little two.

Halloween! You know! The child said with a laugh.
This kid is as funny as the animals we saw yesterday – a pink giraffe!
You saw a pink giraffe! The child said You two are funny!
Until this, the aliens thought the oddest earth idea was the concept of money.

Thru the Eyes of a Child

Thru the eyes of a child where newness abounds,
the magical lure of the merry go round..
It's piped in repetitious sound entices
spectators all around..
"Choose your seat" says a ticketer at the gate.
Large steel poles anchor in the animals fate.
Painted horses methodically go up and down
with hoofs that never meet the ground..
Mermaids, tigers, and other beasts, co-exist
here, all in peace..
Thru the eyes of a child what a fantasy feast.
"Let's go one more time at least?"
