PICKINGS

I’m not a dwarf or a giant
But the male version of petite
I’m the right size and defiant
And not so easy to defeat
That bitesize word is horrible
But you know, I’m a cannibal

Untitled
Slim pickings are there when
Untruths speak with delicate
Tongues and that is when
Grace escapes me.

Entering every orifice is an
Unsacred vibration
Grotesque in nature.

Like a vacuum it seems
Escape is impossible.

Oh, tempter, displaying your unripe ruby fruit,
Easy pickings for the lazy, raffish masses
While staying your ripe royal lushness out of reach
Behind thorn barriers to tear the hides of men
Greedy to press their lips against your swollen skin,
Then gentle bite, receive your bitter-sweet reward....

one freshly killed prey
          sparks a feeding frenzy as...
                    lions fight for scraps

hyenas steal some
          vultures wait for slim pickings
                    spoils of war are theirs

The Pick
This is it
The perfect pick
But where in the world do I flick it

Thought I had
This habit kicked
Here is proof I didn't

Maybe if
I wear oven mitts
Then pointer finger would listen

Lately it's
Been hit and miss
With my daily pickings

Guess this is
Just what it is
As I go back to digging...

Northern Winds
Roses bleed
their petals bare
Thorns gone missing
pickings rare

Crimson anguish
garden sown
Season desperate
roots bemoan

Roses bleed
their fragrance spoiled
 Lovers search
as stems recoil

Cold breaths gather
 northern winds
 Seeds of hope
—to plant again

A waning moon hangs
under an obsidian sky
as I walk through a
the dark scrub forest
past stumps of giants
felled long ago.

The river‘s low
few salmon in the pools
and none flounder
on the gravel banks.
Eagles and ravens
are not to be seen
though the signs say
bears have been
sighted.

Once this river sustained
an autumn feast but
now pickings
are pretty
slim....

What's and What's Not
Poetry pace are not blind
Nor are they cripple.
Like sediment, they have origins
From verbitims, beyond and multiple.

Poetic vibes are not spooks
Therefore, their words are hardly lose.
Their notions aren't pickings
And so their lines aren't loose.

For their being is like Rome
So classically inspires by circumstances,
Utterances amid many waggle nature.
These burdens are bodies and substances....

Off to the races, running...
from pillar to post,
from store A to Z.

a mad dash for...
sweet deals; the bright light
of sheer excitement...

grace the faces
of early shoppers.
'Tis that time again...

for bargain-hunting.
So good luck, if it's your thing.
Don't be left with slim pickings!

New Twist On Peter Piper
If Peter Piper got tired of picking pecks of pickled peppers,
and packed his jars of peppers, pickled, in boxes of newspaper,
placing them in a place that was picked for putting his peppers,
then returned to a different place of picking, to pick;
What, perchance, would Peter Piper pick, to pick,
in place of pickled peppers like the peppers he packed away,
and in what place would he put all his new pickings,
if his pickled pepper place was packed?...

Slim Pickings
Went with the kids to the blueberry farm,
Everyone ready to pick.
Armed with a bucket, we wandered the rows
But somehow our luck ran out quick.

For nary a berry on nary a bush,
Except some real tiny and tart.
The kids pulled a few, they went plunk in the pail;
We were off to a not-so-great start.

The season is ending this weekend, we heard;
I guess that explains our dumb luck.
We'll settle for strawberries that, in the store,
We managed, when shopping, to pluck....
