coffee chilled

a chilly perked coffee tale

cube clinked icy beans prevail

cool refreshing sip

summer fellowship

a brewed journey never fail.

Vicars

There once were two elderly vicars
Who had unreliable tickers
But they perked up no end
When they saw a lass bend
And got a good view of her knickers

Owl's Hoot In the Wind

An owl’s hoot was heard in the wind today
My ears perked up and my blood ran cold
Sounded close but may have been far away
An owl’s spiritual quest never grows old

Not My Exit

Hearing the word “genitalia” on the subway Immediately perked up thinking of love's ballet Cupping my ears Trying hard to hear As they exit, I follow, not my stop to my dismay

Green Thumb

With green fingers the gardener worked
Hence the garden thrived and perked,
Ironically when blueberries collected
Thumbs were stained from fruit selected.

Guess What?

Looking intently at me with lime green eyes
Those ears perked, listening for any tiny sound
Under the rug trying to play innocent

Gray with black markings like a bobcat
Tiny button nose adorned by whiskers
Gracing that smiling mouth, heart capturing

Phoenix Departs

And then, the angel shouted, their ears perked

Those waiting shouted, “We are gathered here ~ hiding.”

"The tales are true, dear majesty, and we doubted."

And, with a wisp, they, and the pheonix departed

Awakened From a Deep Sleep

In the sunshine on the living-room rug
Sparkles was asleep in the sun
How I longed to give her a hug
He ears perked up from her sleep
When she heard a Dove's sing
        Quickly she bounded
         To the glass door
          On the floor
           She sat
            Stared

Wake Up U

Wake up
get out of your house
come get together
come love each other
throw out that bad coffee
that is bubbling and brewing
enough is enough
of what is reasonable
the coffee has perked
the grounds need throwing out
they have become bitter
get out of your house
no more staying home
come let's get together
come let's love each other
wake up

Acrostic Agility Poetry Contest

Paws on the windowsill, waiting for me
Ears perked up at the jingle of keys
Treats disappear with lightning speed

Dirt on the floor, but I don’t mind
Over and over, he’s one of a kind
Goofy grin, tongue out, tail wagging behind

Torn-up bear, stuffing all around
Once his favorite, now battle-worn and brown
You’d think it still squeaked by the way he pounces down

A Pancake Moon

I tossed my pancake
Right into the sky
I looked up and saw
It stuck to the night
A perfect round
Done just right
Glowing with syrup
As it perked me up!
It tempted me alright
Have you ever tried
Tossing your pancake
Into the open sky
It inched closer to me
As it grew very fat
I held out my plate
And it dropped
Just like that!

Conversing with his Puppy Fred

Johnny sat on the tire swing speaking to his pup
He stared at the ground, and he rarely looked up.
No one understood him as well as Fred, of course.
He had a cat, two bunnies, a chicken and a horse.

But Fred was an appreciative audience for sure.
His listening ears were perked, his manner was pure.
He did not miss a word, and he was cuddly too.
Johnny felt much better after this conversation was through.

Enchantress of the Woods

I heard the chanting but thought it was drumming
Was it the trees? My ears perked up a bit higher.
I wanted to know who or what was in the woods.
It was an enchantress, lost in a song of her creation.

She saw me not, as she wandered past, making music.
I am not magical, but I recognize mysticism when I hear it.
Melodic notes amazed me with her cosmic connection.
The woods seemed more alive than ever; she was a keeper.

Courteous Change

Short-term hell
Long-term heaven
I cannot get even
With change ringing bells

I can live
With senses perked
Poised for change and its work
What's there to forgive?

We excel
We stay trying
Let humor seep on in
Good efforts will compel

Short-term hell
Long-term heaven
What's there to believe in?
Good change means us well

All life age
Time is kinder
We move from harsh to fair
Change is kin to stage.

A Square Meal

I had a meal that wasn’t square
Though all the things I’d need were there:
Some crusty bread, some cheese and fruit
And lots of salad spreads, to boot.

A plate of veggies, nicely sliced
And lox and cream cheese, which enticed.
A pot of coffee, freshly perked
And pastries (where the cal’ries lurked).

I lunched with utter pure delight;
The hostess got it all just right.
I wonder how would one prepare
A better meal to make it square.

A Tender Expression

Your irresistible smile
Covered by a dismal visage
Eager to salvage that grin,
Palm in palm, I lay a kiss
Upon your cheek
And whisper terms of attraction in your ear
Awaiting to see those familiar dimples
Form over the peaks of perked lips,
Your most admirable feature.
I wait, I witness- strain from your sulk
Is gently lifted into a tender expression
That I wish to keep spirited,
A tender expression
That only I have the privilege to lay eyes upon.

Night Tastes Like

Night Tastes Like

Night tastes like:

Hot, black coffee
freshly perked.

Dark pumpernickel bread
fresh out of the oven.

Sweet black licorice
stringy kind of course.

A thick slice of
Mississippi mud pie.

A piece of dark chocolate
slightly bitter.

Dark bottom shoefly pie
made with black strap molasses.

The sense of taste can
heighten our sense of
imagination.

*shoefly pie is Pennsylvania Dutch type of pie made with molasses*

Cat Came Unglued

Standing in the doorway, somewhat dishabille,
the neighbor's cat had staked out my grill.
The night before we'd barbecued
some fish and fries and other food.
And now the smells lingering still,
perked up that puss like a pep pill.
At first, I heard disquietude
stalking my deck with attitude.
And in her eyes, a look to kill;
I gave her space with no ill-will.
Out of that grill flew mouse and brood.
What happened next? Cat came unglued.

Cup O' Joe

The coffee perked its way through the house,
blinding my ears with black and dark blue hues.
Bruised, I go for my first cup o’ joe.

The first sip blinds my eyes
causing tears of red and green to form,
then fall,
scattered like starfish
Across the sand.

I set the cup aside and set myself to a task
waiting for it to cool.

Alas, when I return
The hot liquid is cold and
joins my feet in a chilling dirge.

And I’m off to the microwave…

A Dozen Ducklings

A hi-rise building in my nabe,
With fountain out in front,
Was where I saw 12 ducklings
And it wasn’t just a stunt.

For yesterday, I saw a duck
Within the fountain’s pool,
A rare sight in the city,
Where most often pigeons rule.

She must have been preparing
For her brand-new balls of fluff,
Now all lined up by the water,
Not a one quite brave enough.

The city has its wonders
And it perked me up to view,
On my morning walk, 12 ducklings
Huddled on York Avenue.

Tap, Tap, Tap

Tap, Tap, Tap

Tiny scruffy shoes
Awaiting small waiflike feet.
Pining to explore.
Tattered from walking,
Adoring the exploring.
Providing comfort.
Two lonely black shoes
Amusing both days and nights.
Praying for delight.
Tiny shoes now rest.
Anticipating new dreams.
Pretending to sleep.
Tomorrow she comes.
And slips tiny feet inside.
Proudly perked-up souls –
Two happy black shoes
Anxiously begin the day.
Playfully happy –

The Drone Guy

My ears perked up at Bauer
When the radio talked sports.
A player for the Indians,
By all the news reports,

Was set to pitch Game 2
(The Series winding towards the end)
When he had a "pinkie laceration,"
Needing time to mend.

He'll get to start Game 3, they hope,
His hobby left alone,
For Trevor Bauer's injury
Was blamed upon his drone.

When baseball Bauers hit the news,
(I've 2 of them to thank)
I won't claim kinship to the drone guy,
Just to Cousin Hank!*

(not true!)
