Run, Girl, Run
She was just eleven, small and spry,
Her father said, “You’re due, oh my…”
A spanking, harsh, the kind she knew,
But this time she thought, “Not today, not you.”

He called her brothers, big and loud,
“Go catch your sister—make me proud!”
She took off running, barefoot and wild,
With twenty meters head start, a desperate child.

A Star Shone Bright

A star shone bright in Eastern sky
   two thousand years ago
as angels sang their hymns on high
   to let the whole world know.
They sang their praise, their greeting bring
as bells in heaven start to ring

At eighteen,
  I thought that I could write my way to heaven
  I’d waltz right in, announce my name, and sit

  I sat in jail to rot in isolation
