Fledglings
downy puffballs
of yellow-white feathers
sporting beaks of orange-yellow
discover the joy of liquid raindrops
cascading down from trees to leaves
mastering their art fast
precious offspring
fledglings
Chester CatMaster, a nature wizard,
cast a few spells upon some lazy lizards;
chanting “Meow-chi-nik-de-nook-do-kangi”,
he turned them into various fungi.
There were Buttons and ake,
Puffballs, Polypores and maitake;
Hedgehog, Earpiks and Penny Buns,
Old Chester was having so much fun.
Chester had given them legs of their own,
around and around him, they all did roam.
He held onto their roots like little leashes,
this sight left me quite shockingly speechless.
There he stood with the fungi all dancing around,
I believe he considered them to be little clowns.
Then he did something that had me surprised,
he planted them into the ground and fertilized.
Turned their legs into roots that held them in place,
I looked and he had a huge smile on his face.
He said he was planting a yard full of trees,
the fungi helped them to communicate with ease.
Warding off dangerous insects is vital;
fungi are helping trees do it in cycles.
Chester CatMaster is simply the best;
his Fungi will always outdo the rest.
In an Elysian wood,
flitting faeries
among the trees
ponder their
magical seeding,
for a fairy ring
they’ll build,
within the greenwoods
emerald sea.
Moss-laden ferns
feathery light,
help feed faerie magic
late at night growing fungi,
puffballs round,
a faerie ring,
inedible magic.

A STRAND (1074) Poetry Contest
Brian Strand
A countryside walk gives me such delight
yellow dandelions grow in the field
Soon they will transform, changing to pure white
soft puffballs, where minute seeds are concealed -
to a gentle breeze all these seeds will yield
Tiny seeds hang on to white parachutes,
with mother nature they are in cahoots
Scattered by the wind they drift in the air
until they fall to earth and put down roots…
but some gardeners find them a nightmare!

Catapulting puffballs roam
vast stretches of ocean;
skeletal limbs reveal
stories lost to time;
rooted sage
taking in the salty air;
lungs filled to capacity,
give birth to
tenderness beneath
heaven’s breast;
life does not end,
it only renews.
Is snow heavy or light
a dandelion's weightless flight
or a heavy heart sinking tonight
puffballs, snowballs and a patina of gold.
Puffballs ring the forest evergreens;
In the peripheral they dance;
Flickering energy lights
Bobbing magic specters
Woodland fairies work
Their magic with
Delightful
Mystic
Ease.
They stand tall with their yellow coat,
Before they send their saintly seeds afloat…
Spiritual soldiers in silence softly set sail,
Through fields of dreams with a tenuous trail.
Dancing and drifting until the wind has gone,
Bringers of wishes decorating the dawn...
Panoramic puffballs pollinating the view,
Under heavenly skies of bewitching blue.
The sacrificial soldiers will not return,
As their love diminishes we will always yearn…
Dandelions of the seraphical sacred sun,
With beauty unleashed your will, be done.

Placed 2'nd...Thank You
Little Irish dasies
Puffballs
A child's delight
Dandelion wishes
Colors of the sun and the moon
Strong roots
All winter long
Lionstooth leaves
Green quickly
With the coming of spring
Bold florets of yellow
Open to the morning sun
Close to sleep at night
Puffballs
Monet's delight
Some greens
Some wine
Strong roots
All summer long

Tree Art-God's Design
Many puffballs clusters cling to tree
making one want to take a picture
to capture the beauty of God's
handicraft of perfect design
another today
I will fill my hours
chock full of silliness.
paint my face
clown red with big
peering eyes that
see all that is serious
making me delirious.
I walk into the
forest as far as I am able,
my lunch in
a large coffee can.
munch on may apples
and wild strawberries
leeks fried up with morels
and puffballs.
thankful that my mind wanders
to such delicious places. Here
where I am living in the truest
sense of the word living,
not mere existence.
I open my mouth wide and sing
at the top of my lungs
for only me to hear
and waltz in a clearing I had
found on another silly wandering day.
I lose myself by the placid pond
brimming with yellow and iridescent fowl!
Are they held together by filial bond
in that enchanting man-made bowl?
Amorous duo in a trance profound
drift complacently in love's slow ebb
One of them turning its neck full around
to watch the mate following the love web
I see them proud and puffy with their clutch
leading ducklings to the grass-licked edge
Six little puffballs, so furry and tender to touch—
ambling towards two eager kids on the bench.
The curly-haired girl tossing cold pretzel,
the blue-eyed boy throwing chips in pieces-
tantalizing the innocent birds for a morsel
of vile food unfit for their species.
Pronto! the petite mother came running
With a word of warning and advice
“Just wait another 5 minutes darling
While daddy gets corn and lettuce.”
Filled my eyes with respect as I stare
at the young woman, slight as a stick.
Silent applause for the mom who couldn’t bear
Offering coated poison to another one's kid.

SUCCULENT TASTY POPCORN
WHITE CRUNCHY PUFFBALLS
YOU SO COVETABLE WARM
BUT WHEN BUTTERY
I SUCCUMB TO YOU
kING OF CORNS
YUMMMMMM!
Patches of silv'ry dew on young green grass
Catch me smiling back as I do pass;
Catch me, too, do leafy tweets I hear---
Little tings of May that treat my ear.
Day has come up perfect, winds are mild;
Scattered clouds like puffballs pop on by.
Sunlight glances 'round---a wond'ring child---
Fondling swinging wires that wrap the sky.
Drivers start their engines, pick up speed,
Now the street is live with Steel's deed!
Laughing, I exult to stop right here,
Writing down the "ups" that are so dear.
