Lazy Evening on my Porch with My Dogs
the evening is alive with promise
dogs lie on their porch, loving the breeze
chimes are tinkling in a happy manner
there are two sounds – the air conditioner and crickets
the wind picks up strength; leaves rustle
one dog’s head comes up; he gulps some wind
in the distance a dog barks. My two dogs are on their feet.
They run

Porch Light
The porch light comes on
as if to beacon strangers
for friend it lights a path to welcome
for thief it warns stay away in shadow
Attracts moths as they flutter into the brightness
as if the bright moon came to earth.
The porch light comforts as a nightlight for home
easing fears of dark outside, of the unknown.
Sleep well as night

A Porch Swing's Tale
A Porch Swing's Tale
The sun hangs low, a bruised peach in the sky
my old boots are caked with the red dust of a journey I never started
three
This here porch swing rocks on, steady and slow
but my soul feels like it's caught between the back porch and the front gate
somewhere between a hello and a goodbye,

Sitting on the Porch
something small almost imperceptible is crawling across the porch
I have to get closer to see it; it is a tiny bug, so small it has no color
I wonder if my dogs have noticed; but they are asleep, not caring
leaves of my lilac tree capture my attention next; they seem to shimmer.
a different color on the

By the squeaky old gate that tomorrow will find
Why do we call the good old days,
good?
Grandma was always talking,
talking about the days that had passed.
I wonder if they were really that good,
or does our mind play a trick on us?
Grandma loved sitting on her porch,
looking out over her land in her rocking chair.
Now the old rustic white fence,
is falling down

The Trip Back
It was a long way home
I had wandered for many miles
Searching for that pot of gold
That’s said to be at the end
Of every rainbow
I saw a lot of rainbows
That stretched across galaxies
With no end in sight
But no hint of a pot of gold
Did I see
I encountered a lot of well-polished stones
And although there were
Well worn

porch renovation confuses mud dauber
frenzied mud dauber
porch railings are no longer
we are the killers
he bores hole in post
angry about the railings
what will they call home
will he sound alarm
will army wasps come to fight
dejected he leaves

A Lazy day on a Porch
Dog is lying in the shade, his butt under the car’s tire
I bask in the sun, loving the Vitamin D
Wind picks up in a savage way
Shiny coral leaves dance in a macabre way
Dead, they forgot to fall off their branches last fall
Next month the new growth will begin
Will the neonates force the oldsters to the

Porch Lights
Glistening lights across my porch
Giving her a whisper of whimsy
I love having them up there
They are a reflection of me
Fragile, yet showy
Dazzling in a quiet, joyful way
Fantastically decorative and fun!

sitting on my porch in Kansas
It is over sixty degrees today
Unusually warm for pre-March Kansas
I sit on my porch, sunbathing
Wearing corduroy slacks, a jacket and tennis shoes
A swift breeze gives my face a bit of a chill
My fingernails are black, so I do a little grooming
What did I get into? The black comes out as crumbles.
My dogs are overjoyed that

a huge covered porch
born in Canada
in a snowstorm
snowflakes were falling
dad drove carefully
we made it
and I was born
into the world screaming
odd for I am quiet
I recall playing

As It Goes By
when I was a little fellow
sitting on the front porch
waving at the Amish buggy
as it goes by
we weren't much different
as we were farming with horses then
but now there's a machine shed
instead of a barn
huge machinery my grandson uses to farm
I'm ninety now
sitting on the front porch
waving at the Amish buggy
as it goes by

porch has a facelift
The porch looks great
She has had a complete face lift
The old rickety rack stuff is gone
New space opens up to a larger landscape
I am enjoying my yard for the first time
No railings, which always prevented my view.
A costly job, but well worth it.

our porch is a mess
our porch is a mess
falling apart
I do not notice it
until the week before we have company
too late to do anything about it now
when did the three pieces of gingerbread fall off?
Where are the missing wind chimes?
I note that it is rather shabby
Some of the boards are warped,
pieces of the railing are falling in
We are not
