Marriage has it's ups and it's downs
But it far exceeds the alternative
A lonely life without love and affection
Love's one of life's true superlatives

Some days we have heated discussions
That's how it was meant to be
Then she does something ever so sweet
And you forget why you disagreed

It isn't always going to be clear sailing
But if the bond is truly strong
It's worth the struggles times over
If you're lucky it will end up lifelong

The male tendency is to play the field
But trust me life's way too short
To become involved at playing the field
Probably means some time in court

Not sure the ladies will like my analogy
It's the lesser of two evils as they say
Oh boy I think I may have done it this time
Must convince Cathie it's just a cliche

You’re a liar and a cheat
Just like a dog on heat

You lurk behind a cobweb thin disguise
and try so hard to fool the guys
But I’ve seen the way you try play the field

You’ve tried your best to manipulate me
Listen up honey, I’m not blind I clearly see
But I’ve got used to your patronising ways
I won’t take any more of your crap
I’m gonna start to answer back!

You’re a liar and a cheat
Just like a dog on heat

You lurk behind a cobweb thin disguise
and try so hard to fool the guys
But I’ve seen the way you try play the field

You tried to treat me like a fool
Broke many hearts, broke every rule
But sugar you can no longer deceive me
I’ve got my eye on you and note everything you do
Hope I’ve got that message clearly through to you

You’re a liar and a cheat
Just like a dog on heat

You lurk behind a thin disguise
and try so hard to fool the guys
But I’ve seen the way you try play the field
If you continue on this way and all the petty games you play
In time the truth about you is gonna be revealed!

Stung

Bob Bills married a lady for her money,
She left because he treated her crummy.
He yearned to play the field
But it had nothing to yield.
Now he has neither money nor a honey.

Later a Poet Laureate

Later A Poet Laureate

One to me you were so sincere
Then one day when you did disappear
My heart was broken and I became sad
And now I knew I just had been had.

Over and over my mind was tormented
After I discovered it was demented
To God started praying while I kneeled
He said it was always best to play the field.

I really appreciated such a suggestion
After my sins were caught in a confession
And slowly together the puzzle was pieced
When I started listening to the Priest.

One thing at a time should attempt and take
And never again will my heart ever break;
From God to me another message was sent
Have you thought running for President.

Should I protest when I heard God's plea?
What in the world has come over me?
By everyone I would receive all the blame;
Bowed out and later Poet Laureate became.

Bird In a Tux

I do not fly but waddle far.
For fun I slide on my tummy.
And if I have my eye on a mate
I'll feed them fishes so yummy!

Singing a love song is common for me.
To attract a mate I'll croon.
And if I leave the colony sometime
I'll surely be back soon.

Under the water I really can't breathe.
But can hold my breath a short while.
I spend my time mostly at sea.
But when on shore I make humans smile.

You'll point at me and giggle out loud.
I know you think I'm cute!
But don't try to capture me I plead.
Just admire my black and white suit.

A little bit like you humans I am.
Sometimes I mate for life.
Yet other times I play the field.
Perhaps even cheat on my "wife"!

So here I go to dive and plunge
where the water is deep and cold.
Just some things you should know about me.
I'm amazing-if I may be so bold!

Next Broken Heart

(2/16/12)

You may not hear the sounds
But they are coming in leaps and bounds.
Hearts being broken in two
And no one knows just what to do.

In this world of uncertainties
No one knows just what they’ll be.
Searching for love - yet wanting to play the field
When true love comes , they won’t know how to feel.

Love is not a physical attraction
But an emotional reaction.
So many explanations for the feelings of love
And all are sent from the heavens above.

Now you may think that you know it all
And on the wayside these words will fall.

But will you be the next heart broken in two ?
THAT MY FRIEND DEPENDS ON YOU !

Rampage

Tennis balls in the court of life
Come back faster than speed of light
Some have anger attached
Having no control over petty thought
Choosing not to play the field
Called negative ream
Lighten up change the tune
As the world turns
Moments do not come back to relive
We only get one chance at events
Entitlements teased
Wasted efforts
Pitty no one

Permissive Path

Permissive Path by Rob Barratt

A permissive path who slept around
Made her bed with common ground

She was quickly impregnated
And subsequently cultivated

She produced a crop of baby corn
But now she’s shacked up …. With a lawn

One day she’ll hit a rocky patch
She’ll go to seed soon, just you watch

Her secret truth will be revealed
Of how she loved to play the field

I guess she knew what “lost the plot” meant
In her failed affair with an allotment

Nobody could ever make her
Settle down with half an acre

It’s she who is the little flirt
It’s me who likes to dish the dirt

Fight

The marriage proposal
like a forced march
through Fort Jackson, a backpack
Full of chert beating on his spine.

He stood his ground with her.
His actions spoke volumes.
Good soldiers die with assurance.
No romance in war.

Refreshingly quiet,
The dutiful tour.
She paced herself sleepy.
She could rest in peace.

Honor the hero.
(He'd saved her once.)
Uniform with purpose.
Fight the good fight.

The battle impressed.
Things escalated.
Orders got shouted.
Ammunition, manufactured.

Grenades for detonating.
Entire minefields laid.
(Dangerous territory:
Don't play the field.)

Tanks roll in now.
She runs for cover.
Still he stands strong.
Warriors don't yield.

Until there is torture.
Torture's illegal.
But you know what gets said
About love, and real war.

They'd die for each other
But living, so different.
They live with surrender:
Embattlement, love.
