“The Ten-Year Drift”
Ten years buried,
Like a cabin under frozen snow.
Surface: A sudden knock at the door.
A return of ten years.
Suspension of consciousness
I am relieved. Twist of fate;
An icy chill on a white blanket
slate, fresh skin; a new life.
As the sound of snow sonic,
pillows over the cabin.
There sits our picture.
Fades to old blue.
Once a shared shadow.
Becomes an instant replay.
We sat looking out of the window
Sharing an age-old bourbon.
Stirring in clouds, inside clouds.
A jewel in this moment,
Old friends together again.
My dear old friends, you’ve gone away
Looks like if some of you had not
Much time to spare, but that’s okay
I’m off as well from your kind spot
We met through game of circumstances
Of place, time, age and interests
Coincidently given chances
To be each other’s welcomed guests
Were taken instantly as if
Towards forever, but not quite
We shared our joys and firm belief
To find a home, and you did right
Now you are distant through and through
We’ve changed a bit, as it was meant
I might be not the one you knew
Same goes to you, to some extent.
Over time old friends
come together back home
to reminisce
To All The Girls in Reitz,
Your light makes black holes blink out of
existence and stars kneel in homage.
Sisters.I was born at Reitz.
I am a Free State boy me
I am the Rose of Reitz, the radiance
that rules,a rapturous revolution.
Billions of bright bodies bow before
my blossoming beauty.
A touch totally transforms time through
sheer tenderness.
I shimmer,shushing eternity,stunningly
strong,a supernova.
Flames falter, freeze, flee from my fierce fire.
The worlds wait,witnessing what wonders
will waltz from me next.

AP: Honorable Mention 2025
When you meet with old friends
After months, even years,
There is comfort in having
No need to switch gears.
For the groundwork’s been set
And the basics are known,
So there’s just catching up –
How the grandkids have grown!
But most likely you’ll talk
About health or its lack
And the surgeries done
On the hips, knees or back.
There’ll be notes to compare
About travel and shows
And each exercise class
And acquaintances’ woes.
Still, it’s lovely to spend
Time together again.
There should be a repeat,
But who knows where or when.
Making new friends
is a very sweet part of life
that ebbs and flows with time
But, old friends, that have
stood the test of time are
a true treasure
Hey old friend
I miss you so much
I have been drinking so much for sober thoughts
I have been reading to stop thinking
I now know too much but I don't know the truth
Hey old friend
Do you still remember me
I am just getting back to my senses
Life has distracted me from you
I have worked so hard to do nothing
Hey old friend
If you have a minute, ring me
Say you forgive me
For just going missing
I really thought it would save me
I believed that I had to lose faith
Hey old friend
if we do not meet
I died remembering your name
I think that's cool in this age
Where all we do is look at mirrors and hate ourselves
Hey Old friend
I miss you
Hey old friend
I love you
Hey old friend
Lets be younger again
I am you
May we all be blessed to have old friends…
who, even after years apart, getting back together is a breeze….
who communicate through friendship
in the language of memories
We grow up bonding
we become inseparable
share dreams and hopes together
waiting to explore life on our own
then in a blink we graduate
go our separate ways
keep in touch every week
then every other
years will pass like clouds
phone calls and numbers change
so do addresses and last names
Life goes on
we find others to bond with
become inseparable with our mates
share new dreams and hopes together
living life as we grow older
than in a blink I'm gone
going our separate ways once again
you visit the cemetery daily
then weekly....
before long my grave becomes overgrown
your address changes
mine stays the same
Life goes on
Rekindled, our bond,
Years lost, now paths interlace,
Laughter blooms anew,
Memories, like stars, align,
Warmth in the cold space between.
The Ghost denied
he was a Ghost,
though clearly
I saw through --
Someone I knew
in life, back then
quite pink, substantial
with lots
and lots to do –
tried and tried
convincing him
all to no avail,
myself even now
more pale
till recognized he
dear friend, himself
who had
read my eulogy….
I hate you a lot.
With a burning passion in my heart.
The way you creep around its weird.
The way you just look, it makes me sick.
The way you twist my words and manipulate me.
The guilt you bring me when you start to blame me.
The way I am stained with the fact that I was fond of you
The way you make me sick, I can’t even explain.
Contest Prompt: "I'm okay, you're okay is a mask in the land of pretend."
Old Friends
"OK?"
"Yes fine" - I lie
over the cold phone line
wishing the plastic receiver
was warm,
like when you held my hand in yours.
Too many years and lies
between us now.
Divorced,
but love you still,
so I have to ask back
"You OK?" - and I hear you lie:
"Yes fine...."
