The Glen is silent, almost to a deadly halt.
You can hear your own breath and your heart beating in your chest.
It’s eerie and you’re feeling afraid.
You don’t know why?
The haar is closing in and dulling any sound even more.
You start to panic and go to turn on your heel.
As you pace yourself to move you look behind you and hear the most awful noise.
“Mum, I’ve lost my shoe in the bog!”
The Perennial
On an overhang, where the mountain slopes gently towards the lowland and the sea
there is a crooked tree with long roots embracing the mountain
Is the plant an asp or a birch, the leaves are compact and sturdy
It has to be as it is the first who catches the winter wind or the salty haar from the sea.
It is also a tree that catches the first light of the day and the last
To see the disappearing day, the first to see how wonderfully clear our firmament can be.
This tree will not risk the indignity, of being dressed up like a tart
have gifts in the colourful wrapping of favour bought under duress and be thrown
on the waste heap when the party is over
This tree will not be an elegant mast on a clipper sailing to China and Ceylon and
one day run aground on the hardy coast of Norway and be sold off as planks.,
This tree is art because someone looked up and said, look
at this, its true art and has a natural beauty and emotion only great art can provoke.
Yasu panju haar kabotar doli
Khuda kay liye na maro goli..
Ye zindagi bhi bekhauf si thi,
Befikr har lamha tha
Na ranjish ka ilm
Na justaju ka zikr
Har khata mukarrar thi
Na koi tasauf,
Na haar jeet ka fikr
Har hasrat mukamal thi
Ye befikri us cigar ki dhuye si kahin kho si gyi,
Jis pal ye befikr nafs begairat ban gyi.
Waqt ki chahat me ye befikr nafs bhi zinda lash ban gyi.

Pandemic Morning
It has been raining in the night
the haar lingers in the bay, but I can see
clouds breaking up,
the sky hides the nascent sun.
Morning coffee is a must.
The air is chilly
he leaves the terrace.
He looks out of the window
in his study and looks at a subdued street
suffering under the pandemic.
It is a sad moment of the day
like it was hesitant to begin.
Then he sees green shoots on a tree
and knows he will live
and love a bit longer.
After a storm
There was a storm in the bay,
blue waves crashing ashore
and flooded the coastal road-
Today the bay is calm but look
at sea, it is grey anger
doesn’t becomes it.
The Haar is coming in a shawl of mist covers
the cargo ships
that moves lazily on a temporary tranquillity.
Die reptiel vrou
Het my alweer geflous
Met my gedeel, haarself ontbloot,
en toe
Die bitter gif gespoeg
Dit vloei uit my bors uit, deur my are
Verander my bloed - haar bloed
Word swart, taai, en koud
Soos haar hart
***
The reptile woman
Has fooled me again
Shared with me, exposed herself
and then
Spat out the bitter venom
It flows out of my chest, through my veins
Changes my blood - her blood
Becomes black, sticky, and cold
Like her heart
Thoughts Gachalard emeralds forms one's inner precious
Giving a unique sense of glamour an sight
chisel'd sculpture call;
showing inner skills devious
varnished tints on canvas;
grasp one's own tenacious light
smoke mist haze an haar;
cuddle thou scarfs textured delight
immortality aspects bravery;
overcomes all bounds an matches
roaring thunder and cracks in clouds;
inspire th' giant fire inside
how thou art a poets thought
to hide yet remain in thy lot
Look it's there, posing haar,
quite lofty an fair, nerve taking air;
hushed breeze only by you;
how wonderful thou care.
To spin an fin in vines bin,
an let thy heart pulse in hin;
To speak an write an start a fight
chug upon what puzzle i am in,
an flurr like air to fins mine gold;
from about to finish and hold
skips away from my bold air
how lucky a-holic air
i fear of e're.
Innocent you are
truth tho' only by you
for where i leave and hug you
and forget once i left thee
much i see remain haar
for when i dive and bear
sought respect not any nor none
you expect more than any
more than I

Pappa, my pappa – Het jy my mamma lief?
Hoekom bly jy hierso nou?
Vertel my asseblief?
Hoekom het my mamma nou
‘n ander man gekry? Is hy iets van my?
Sal hy haar nou vashou?
Ek wil nie meer by mamma bly –
dis lekker hier by jou
Het jy iemand anders? Dalk ‘n ander vrou?
Watter huis is dan my plek?
Waar pas ek die prentjie in?
Is ek jou kind, is ek? Is ek?
Ek wil jou hê -
Hoe gaan ons mamma sê?
Son
Die son by my het reeds gesak
Die duisternis was dik en koud
‘n Kaartjie maak my bene swak
Vir daardie nuwe oponthoud
Maar die kaartjie het alreeds verval
Toe het dit effens lig geword
Die nag was eintlik baie kort
Lewe in ‘n Spieël
