FLOTILLA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
her heart, once a crammed attic,
overflowing with yesterday’s dusty relics,
became a barren room.
each secret—a silent, fragile confession,
she scrawled on paper thin as skin,
slipped into the throat of antique glass.
a cardboard ark, ferrying her bottled truths,
down to the shore she walked,
where the sea sighs secrets of its own.
a flotilla of confessions and longing,
a bobbing armada of regret,
pushed by the tide—away, away, away.
she raised her hands in farewell
releasing all her burdens,
their echoes fading on salty winds
The mist is lifting, soon the world
will reveal itself to be just shorelines
between one dream and another.
I need to be away.
my last Autumn will be as my first,
something undefined,
yet always pushing me along,
a moving stream
still ferrying last year's fallen leaf.
This season the foliage is burning brighter,
a deeper hue has caught fire,
and when the trees are bare
will I keep walking between them
or shall I be
a luminous river in flood,
creating shorelines where none before
have ever existed.
Moon shines
between white blinds
Above green pines
Ferrying my mind
On a poetic cruise
Of crimson and blues
For I remember whose
Heart played like a flute
Pied piper of love's lavender
Looking for it like scavenger
White water in dry desert time
What you seek is not easy to find
Medicinal muse come see me
For I need your fuchsia fantasy
To aid my days and shade my peace
To help me wait for denim destiny
No longer meek now I’m bolder
I definitely need a lime love soldier
One who exists on purple passions
Of licorice lips tender soul rations
Until we meet I will patiently wait
For you surely exist just as I was made
To answer your questions as you pray
To be your blessing in every emerald way
As you too will bless my life
Inspiring new peach poetic cries
Hiring new ideas while creating art
Of old and new love with healing heart
With an oar and a long boat
Down river goes the deal maker,
Ferrying another soul afloat
... For I am their taker ...
Black cloak 'round my shoulder
Two coins in my bony hand,
I bring the younger or older
Off to a more distant land
Paddling waters, still and gray
Done a million times or more,
Candle and lantern to light my way
Back and forth to each shore
My fee is due on your funeral day
Not long after a warm body dies,
So your spirit will not have to pay
May someone lay them on your eyes
'Tis no easy, nor grim task ...
For two thin coins of solid gold,
Death wears no ghoulish mask
Draped in peaceful shrouds of olde
Entrust unto me, the so-called reaper
Sent on down here by your maker,
Fear not me ... a gate keeper
This olde ferryman ... the taker.
Aeneid Book 6: The Descent into the Underworld
by Virgil
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch
The Sibyl began to speak to Aeneas:
“God-blooded Trojan, son of Anchises,
descending into the Underworld’s easy
since Death’s dark door stands eternally unbarred.
But to retrace one’s steps and return to the surface:
that’s the conundrum, that’s the catch!
Godsons have done it, the chosen few
whom welcoming Jupiter favored
and whose virtue merited heaven.
However, even the Blessed find headway’s hard:
immense woods barricade boggy bottomland
where the Cocytus glides with its dark coils.
But if you insist on ferrying the Styx twice
and twice traversing Tartarus,
if Love demands you indulge in such madness,
listen closely to how you must proceed...”
You ask me what am I wearing
A heart full of hazel hope
A silver spirit daring and cherry caring
My mind is not blind to green ghosts I’m carrying
For teal time has designs of destiny I’m ferrying
I wear ribbons in my hair
The colors are significantly there
One purple for my lupus flare
Three pink for breast cancer share
One black for the fact Black Lives Matter
Brown for ancestors whose prayers are scattered
To the four winds despite sins of slavery
The brown ribbon given is one most dear to me
Red for ed as education is a neon need
Green as in collards for scholars to feed
Our kids in school all need to eat
Stop playing the fool make meals free
Blue for the souls battling mental illnesses
For many the truth is a battle with brilliance
Yellow for the mellowed heart of the missing
Orange for the natives and the real thanksgiving
White is for the lives of victims of drunk drivers
Lime is for all who serve and what they died for
Peach is for peace I hope the world will know
Clear is for you dear and whatever burdens your soul
I wear these ribbons like sky wears rainbow
I pray that we find our path no matter where we go
In the ocean of lyrical words and mermaid metaphors,
poetic pirates steal the gold that glistens;
floating in eloquence,
flowing with diamond tears,
but within inked skulls and bones
names of those that thieve in paper silence~
are etched across sea-glass with searing blood,
as trinkets I once wore are tainted,
and buried within hermit shores.
There, footprints echo and mirror truth of the unseen,
rippling with stolen sunsets and salt-soaked swords,
while soliloquies of the sky,
kiss the marine armor of sapphires…
I ponder, what would the sun now sing to the moon?
Are we aimless vessels ferrying venom?
Are jewels of sincerity, lost within melted memories?
Perhaps, from lagoons of lies, we learn~
life beneath the bluest of waves,
breathes grotesque rhymes woven in ice-cold green.
Seagulls serenade the salty air,
as serene clusters of dreams~
weave poetry with palm leaves.
There, waves whisper exotic love,
ferrying memories of an island.
If my heart must break, let it bleed seas of kindness,
ferrying forgiveness to rinse away pain,
etched across stained shores,
as I care for slowing pulses, searching for lyrical light….
and If lucky stars do wane, I’ll rhyme, be the healing hymn~
for sailing silhouettes still aching for serenity.
My pearl heart rests
in the chiffon sands
of forsaken memories,
like an open oyster shell,
engrossed in saffron-streaked
serenades,
while embracing. shifting shades
of an
apricot-feathered sunset,
the sky sings for
your magnolia magic~
unraveling clapping
rays of glittery pompoms
celebrating the
rising of champagne crescent.
There, I find secret
keys to the golden
g a t e s of your soul.
I gaze beyond the
sparkling crest of
the honeyed horizon,
as cantaloupe lines
of waning gloaming~
slowly tip-toe
towards the
whistling waves,
ferrying Poseidon’s
souvenirs draped
in sapphire strings,
like scattered
sea-shells singing
songs to rippling
runes of cosmic love.
And this poem shall remain
within porcelain pages;
mermaid memoir of
a mystical romance untold.
When harlequin herbs bask in jeweled forests, do you hear me?
ferrying upon pearl-prayers, seeking warmth in doe's walnut eyes,
I'm the last of seven souls ~ before heaven's hyacinth gates.
When the sunset queen sings,
jinxed Jasmines wither, and~
primrose willows quiver,
unfurling clemency
in ivory sliver.
When the sunset queen sings,
wailing waves pause in awe
sea-fairies waltz through haze,
twirling to tuscan tunes,
flipping turmeric rays.
When the sunset queen sings,
nightingales sigh and trill,
as moon pearls soar above
cinnamon glazed ripples,
ferrying psalms of love.
When the sunset queen sings,
first star of twilight bleeds
flaming lilies of heart~
inking dusky dreamscapes
with mellifluous art.
I kissed the moon tonight, enveloped
with quartz amulets of Luna
as luminous streams of stars
paint my poetic sky
glazed in citrine dust
tracing rain dews
in your eyes
to cleanse
these
scars
I hide
within teal
rivers, swiftly
ferrying lanterns
whilst wishing upon the
Milky Way that your cosmic
rhymes would save my aching soul from
drowning , so take my heart, engrave love
As
I watch
the waves crash
and unfold gems
in neon blue dust
across ivory shores
silky reflections scatter
upon moon glazed tides in cadence
and flaming twin stars whirl in circles
sprinkling magic upon Poseidon’s realm
There's a turquoise song for the healing hearts
ruffling as lyrical melodies
along idyllic crests of hope
where memories float in a
bottle of souvenirs
ferrying sapphire
swells of daydreams
that ebb in
tune to
faith
