AFCON GRAND FINALE

AFCON GRAND FINALE

In the grand Afcon ring so vast and grand,
The Super Eagle of NIGERIA takes a stand,
In feathers of green and with grace so bold,
Ready to conquer and fierce to behold.4

But lo, the Elephant of COTE D'IVOIRE
Stands with strength, a spirit that'll inspire,
In mighty strides and with an unyielding force,
It trumpets its power, ready for the course.8

In this grand finale, the stage is set,
Two noble beasts with glory to be met,
Eagle and Elephant, in battle, they'll soar,
In a timeless dance like never before.¹²

The crowd roars passionly, tension intense,
As these titans clash in a mighty defence,
For in this Afcon spectacle, we'll see,
The beauty of sports is pure and free.¹6

So let's celebrate this clash of might,
In the vibrant colours of the African night.
Whether it's victory or defeat, passion for all,
They'll inspire us all as the Eagle & Elephant brawl.²°

Leaving

It seems so quiet here since you went.
The dog's more settled, the cat's more content.
My friends seem to visit much more than before
and I can visit the pub without starting a war

Now the dust has settled the house is just fine.
I order my groceries and things online
and the fit widow woman down the road
does my washing and ironing by the load.

Darts league on Wednesdays and the odd game of pool,
footy on Saturday with some old mates from school
all keep me active and stop me feeling bereft
which could so easily happen to me since you left.

I'm managing to cope, with the odd glass of wine,
when I'm feeling depressed, but then I'm just fine.
When you walked out the door I didn't think I could
but now I'm much happier than I ever thought I would.

My ongoing rehab means I have to endure
a fortnight away on the French Cote d'Azure.
But if it will help fill the ache in my heart
I'll just grin and bear it, I suppose it's a start.

So there's no need to worry that I'm not sleeping at night,
you're the last person I think of when I turn out the light.
So I'm holding my end up with great fortitude
and thinking of having my tea in the nude.

The Window

The window is long and narrow,
the casement-sill a brooding lid way over my head.
The glass is dirty, thick and knotted.
It is not a window made to see through.

Upstairs, high above the basement
an old woman lives in an apartment with a high ceiling.
Her windows are tall and wide, you can see out of them,
a sea-green park billows below.
I went there once with a note in my hands.
The sky comes to visit those windows.

People live in rooms too high for my imagining,
but I know they dwell in the light.
Ear to door, I hear them laughing together,
clattering down the staircase.
I listen closely to the first rap of their shoes
on the pavement above my head.
Their strides quickly become ghosts in a settling dark.

Half a century later, I wake up on a cote-bed
covered in night-sweats.
The basement has not changed---it cannot change.
The dark window is dreaming above me.
Once a child lived in the dark
I hear it talking in its sleep.
The window is still too high to see through.

Tantine

And at the Cote d’Azur International,

Rest

There was a little girl in a coat.
Singing in a lonely boat
A bird was attracted to her bread,
And the girl smiled and said,
"I shall build you a little cote."

Ain'T You Demure

Ain't You Demure....Challenge

She rode in on a buckskin mare,
Tied up at Cote D'Zur
She sat down by a young cowboy -
He said "Ain't you demure."

She said,"My husband says 'lissome'-
And I prefer that tone."
He said," You're prob'ly cenosure,
But now you're all alone."

"I know you're tryin' for glamour -
You was an ingenue -
But there ain't no panacea
Just say what you can say."

Well, this went on for 'bout an hour -
Could be sempiternal.
The buckskin mare was gettin' bored
The heat was infernal.

The lather on the horses coat
Changed the buckskin's tone
It was downright chatoyant
As if some rare gemstone

And just then the husband walked in
As angry as he looked
What he did was ineffable
That cowboy's goose was cooked.

Well, she cooed and purred to calm him down
And whispered in his ear.
Her voice was downright mellifluous,
"Please let's get out of here."

Chocolate Indulgences (20150129)

If I really had no choice but to divulge,
In mountains of chocolate I would indulge.
I'm not just taking about Snickers,
Reese's peanut butter cups, Butterfingers,
Or other grocery store sweeties.
I'm talking about the expensive stuff, most from oversea:
Fruit and nut bars from British Cadbury,
Milk molasses chips from local Mrs. See's,
Fudge Easter Eggs from domestic Helen Grace,
Belgian praline Sea Shells from Leonidas,
Belgian Cote D'Or bouche pralines,
And from Germany's Ritter Sport--EVERYTHING!
Wallowing in glorious chocolate, I'd be so pathetic,
If not for the fact, that I'm a diabetic.

Premium Member Rest Your Cheek

Rest your cheek on pillowed down
The softest kiss erase thy little frown
Safe in evenings lovely dream
In your fist, moon's tender beam

Rest you cheek on pillowed down
Dance with fairies in sparkled gown
Hear the language of gentle breeze
Serenading the waltzing willow trees

Rest your cheek on pillowed down
Your silken hair a golden crown
Safe in the arms of mother's love
And the watchful eye of God above

Fox is in his den and the dove his cote
Sail away now in your cloud born boat

Premium Member At Fortunes Fair

Oh sweet, sweet anonymity
Through the pressing crowds you’re calling me
Along the streets in city parks
Your presence waits by day or dark.
Just as the judge is passing law
As in so many times before
On parking offence or minor crime
On occasion a case that makes a national headline
The same hand takes the tea maid’s cup
Or swings a club on the Sunday golf match
As famous singers walk the stage
Of what matter is its matter made?
Plywood sheet or glass laminate
The "greatest moments" are a blip
On lifetimes stage where fortune sits
As greater life is lived unsung
Of no recorded note or age
A bar to life’s great tearing pace.
Yes,, somewhere waits for you and me
That sweet sweet anonymity.
A girl with hair like golden down
Is smiling in a country town
Her eyes are soft, her spirit strong
She knows truth, love and easy songs.
She makes up a house where people meet
And lives are crossed so bitter sweet
From kindergarten to university
She sees continuity
And containment of the life she loves
White picket fence and a cote of turtle doves.

Love On the Beach

Sur la plage in France,
I thought I'd found romance,
My olive skinned beauty with cascading hair,
Smiling so sweetly, I tried not to stare,
Her body was bare but for a peach thong,
I was there naked, she saw nothing wrong,
We spoke in a broken half-French, word by word,
But thoughts unspoken were louder still heard,
I said 'I'm Nick' and she said 'I'm Celeste',
Oh Celeste, as you rubbed sun oil onto my chest,
Your eyes they were burning, they encaptured me,
More sparkling, more blue, than the Cote D'Azur sea,
I longed for your neck to feel my kisses sweet,
So I looked at you not as I massaged your feet,
Our chaste romance ended before it began,
Your boyfriend returned and I cowardly ran.
