Faith, Trust and Irony

She's dressed in freshly laundered scrubs,
a floral top and pants pale blue.
There for a moment to hand me a gown,
and tell me what to do.

As I'm getting undressed, she checks on a man,
he's in the room right next to mine.
He's crying in pain and begging for help,
I hear her tell him that he'll be fine.

A few moments later, the crying has stopped,
as she leaves she turns out his light.
Whatever she did, it's done the trick,
he'll be able to sleep tonight.

She's back with me now and with her this time,
she has her tools in tow.
It's 3 in the morning and she must be tired,
but if she is it doesn't show.

Thermometer ready to check my 'temp,
lift my tongue and tuck it under.
As she wraps the black cuff around my arm,
I watch her and I wonder.

Working twelve hour shifts,
three days off then four days on.
Has she a husband or any children,
who miss her when she's gone?

Does she like cooking or singing?
Does she paint or like to read?
The needle, she pricks me, with such precision,
I hardly even bleed.

My IV's in place, my medicine given,
she says goodnight with eyes so kind.
Just as I'm drifting off into sleep,
a thought suddenly enters my mind.

To this woman I leave my health in her hands,
a serious matter, this isn't a game.
It strikes me as crazy just how much I trust her,
when all I know of her is simply her name.

Premium Member Sherlock Holmes and the Mysterious Case of Appundicitis

A double sonnet in which the great detective and his faithful sidekick, Dr. Watson, alternately deduce the cause of Sherlock’s latest malady…

Part the first
Sherlock could not deduce his source of pain
at first. “Try as I might, I cannot find
the cause – is it contusion, or a sprain?
Perchance a mere psychosis of the mind?

“Yet by deduction, I’ve ruled out the plague,
consumption, smallpox, cholera, and mumps.
My symptoms, although serious, are vague –
this lack of answers has me in the dumps!

“Where’s Watson? He would have a quick prognosis –
I’ve never seen him err in all our years”.
Then! Churn of stomach yields its diagnosis
just as his friend, the good doctor, appears:

“What seems to be the problem, troubled one?”
“It’s alimentary, my dear Watson!”

Part the second
But from the learnéd doctor’s point of view,
there yet were tests and readings still to take.
He’d learnt the ill effects of poor review
and on his friend would not make that mistake.

“Stick out your tongue! Now, turn your head and cough!
Say ‘ah’. Hold this thermometer in place,
and while you’re at it, take your trousers off -
we’d better check your prostate, just in case!"

But Sherlock dashes to the water closet
in dire urgency and grave chagrin
to make a loud and liquidy deposit.
“It’s diarrhea!” Doc yells with a grin.

“How did you know?”, shouts Holmes. “How in tarnation?”
“Why, Holmes, mere process of elimination!”

Lollipop Series- What I Love

Mommy deemed the three-year-old me as an honour
Said that I should become a doctor
Stethoscope and thermometer are in her gift bag
To spark the zeal in me, she set to wave a green flag.

Daddy came all running to put a hard-hat on my head
Said that I should become a builder like his dad
I'll be a great architect, he believed, he already knew
He said it's inherited to me and is nothing new.

Aunt wanted me to follow her baking love
Her skills, no doubt, deserve a bow.
Cakes, cookies and all that she bakes
will now be taught to me, with no breaks.

Uncle Tom said I should inspire the world with my words
He weens that they're powerful than the swords.
An Orator or a writer, a counsellor or a life coach
Be it whatever, he says, I should be there for those who approach.

Everyone has their plans for my future
Looks like I don't need school or a teacher.
I'll be home-schooled and trained every day
But should it start right from the 3rd birthday?

I'm afraid they'ld stop talking to each other
As their dreams for me greatly differ.
Keeping their dreams aside for a minute
I thought of what I wanted, for a moment.

I want to smell the soil when it rains
I want to swill down all the snow flakes
I want to ride a horse and tame rabbits
I want to make friends and take new hobbies.

I want to build castles with clay
And play Peekaboo with Jill and Jay
I want to string the stars and crack the clouds to rain
Eat lots of cake and fake a belly pain.

I love dirty feet and dusty hair
Clay and Crayons is what I care
Play, play, play the whole day
I plead you all not to block my way.

Premium Member One Winter's Night

I stood on the balcony one night,
The land was bathed in luminous light,
The air was filled with winter's chill,
Frost had covered the window sill.

I stared into the sky above,
My heart had swelled full of love,
The galaxy glowed with bright stars,
Lights so heavenly, from afar.

The night shone bright on every hill,
Yet, everything was quiet and still,
Through the valley no wind did blow,
The little village blanketed in snow.

What joy the Yule is going to bring,
At the break of dawn, the town will sing,
Making this, one eve to remember,
On one magical night of December.

But, in this fantasy land it is late,
And this seasonable panorama is great,
I want to take this long walk alone,
Through unchanging scenery, I wander from home.

I'll take a candle to light my way,
Upon the ice, I could walk until day,
I made it up a deep, glittering bank,
In the glistening snowflakes, my feet sank.

A million diamonds now covered the land,
I pulled my mittens on, over my hands,
The snow could never melt in this cold,
The Northern degrees of stories once told.

I will enjoy the winter as in days of old,
The still photographs of the past unfold,
A thermometer shows the drop of degrees,
The thaw of the snow I hope not to see.

Mirrored is my reflection along the river,
Quartz crystals of ice, makes me shiver,
Icicles hang from a cabin, near the woods,
Silently, wolves and elk in the forest, stood.

Reindeer and rabbits run through the snow,
A memorable sight in the lovely moon's glow,
An owl calls out from high in a tree,
Imagine all this, as a keepsake to see.

Tomorrow the snow will make the children sing,
To the hills, a toboggan they will bring,
Soon, we will hear his sleigh bells ring,
And, all the Christmas bells will be jingling!

Premium Member Own Small Comforts

The tropical storm moves closer
Brings wind and choppy seas
From my window it's a gray mass
But ride out the storm with me

Trapped in total isolation
All alone in my pain
Even the joy of the Seagull
Disappears with falling rain

The rain brings it own small comforts
Water to make things green
Clouds to hold sun's thermometer
Time alone to daydream

Weird Physical

Remember Trump's weird physical report
from his doctor.

A doctor have given Trump a physical;
Really awkward, weird and whimsical

Took his temperature using a popsicle.

Premium Member Hearthside On Christmas Eve

I can think of no better contentment that can be had,
Lounging in my robe and slippers comfortably clad,
Than relaxing by the hearth in my favorite chair,
Gazing at the dancing flames, ah, nothing can compare!

A winter storm rages outside piling up drifts of crystal snow.
I checked the thermometer and it read twenty degrees below!
But what care I as we settle in for an evening of respite,
Sipping Berringers White Zinfandel on this Holy winter's night!

We reminisce about the past and things for which we aspire,
Dreamily watching the glowing embers of the dying fire.
With music softly playing and the lights turned down low,
I light my pipe, savoring the aroma and its mellow glow!

I make room for dear old Simba as he curls up on my lap,
Purring contentedly and taking his usual evening nap.
My spouse prepares a bowl of piping hot popcorn for a treat.
I couldn't ask for anything more to make the evening complete!

In the autumn of my life, such simple times I truly treasure.
With my love by my side, I'm satisfied beyond all measure!
The grandfather clock measures time in its inexorable way.
Oh, that time would stand still that I could forever relish this day!

Premium Member Little Johnnie's Ache

Little Johnny came home from school with a bellyache
Naturally Mom feared the most recent local outbreak
Johnnie thankfully had no fever, she suspected it might be a fake
But strange and most bizarre Johnnie had no appetite for steak
Or even for his ultimate favourite strawberry shortcake

The next morning Johnnie barely could awake
Didn’t want to go to school because of a backache
Mom thought the cure might just be a nice big pancake
Or maybe the warm chocolate muffins that she’d bake
But Johnnie just wanted to curl up with his pet rattlesnake

In the afternoon, when Little Johnny mentioned a toothache
Mom reached for the thermometer in case the first time was a mistake
She sent Johnnie for a nap and sat pensive as she took her coffee break
Out the window she saw askew the mounds of leaves to rake
She got up and tiptoed up the stairs to see what was at stake

She found Johnny pouting wide-eyed and awake
As she extended to him a warm loving handshake
In her heart she felt a sudden jolt of earthquake
Poor Little Johnny was growing up at double take
And suffering acutely from his very first heartbreak

Coldest Day In History

The cat bowl has been frooze for a week now and the wind is howling like a banshee in the
window cracks. The thermometer reads eighteen degrees and dropping, granny says the
temperature will keep dropping; she knows the degree of pain in her joints is more severe
than ever before. I hope that the old car starts on time in the morning to get me to work and
back.
The wind was blasting like hurricane forces against the vinyl siding of our home. I hoped
others will have a safe and good night and no frozen pipes or worse. I am glad to have a roof
over my head, my family safe around me and a full belly. Everything else really doesn't
matter. Though I pray that we will have no wind damage to our home tonight on this coldest
night in history.
The night the house was buried in snow; we found a fully frozen buck close to our house and
mounted his head since he didn't need it anymore. The antlers make a good hat rack.
Yes the north wind blew harder than I have ever heard before....causing instant frost bite to
any bare skin exposed. The kind of night for snuggling and chilli or any warm beverage.
This cold night was special in a spiritual way; there was a special visitor to our door that
night and he brought a message like no other. I knew the message was for me and only me
from God Himself....
Yes I had a real awakening that night while fighting off chill bumps and cabin fever.

Secrete Beauty

She was not blessed with comely grace,
spurned and shunned by cupids arrows
because of her displeasing face
and breasts like kneecaps on a sparrow.
Her scrawny frame one could infer
if dressed in red and eyed sideways
she’d mimic a thermometer;
no outward grace to be displayed.
Her real beauty was deep inside
hidden behind two large, brown eyes
where a beautiful soul resides
eternally and undisguised.
Beauty is a skin-deep grace
it’s just a temporary thing:
a short-term asset on a face
that fades away like this years spring.

Morning Breezes 2

When morning breezes bring on the shivers,
and the thermometer is in the teens.
Your head stays buried under the kivers
while the farmer pulls on overall jeans.

When wafts from the kitchen wake your pleasure
with fond smells of bacon and egg victuals;
reflect on what great degree you treasure
a busy farmer's early rituals.

A SEASON'S DANCE

Summer is the season
For gardens and vacation time
Strolls along the seashore
Or in mountains so sublime

Though days are hot beyond belief
We cool off by the pool
With thoughts of Autumn on our mind
'Cause we're nobody's fool

Then lo the Autumn days appear
The temperature goes down
Trees take on a different hue
Gold, crimson, orange, then unsightly brown

Then Winter looms, ready to pounce
The thermometer dips ever so low
We watch in anticipation
Wondering how much lower it may go

Thanksgiving comes, then Christmas
With no relief in sight
The New Year follows closely
Still we shiver in the night

Then April comes so blissfully
Bringing with it lovely flowers
We feel the chill begin to leave
Being replaced by April Showers

And now we check the pollen count
Oh what a dastardly thing
Yet we smile so joyfully
As we greet Spring, beautiful Spring
