Iceberg - Haiku

jagged meringue peaks
etched on steel blue frosted skies
perilous splendor

They look virgin pure
As white as can be
But if you look more closely
The more you see

On the surface they are
What they appear to be
But under the surface
Its what we can not see

They can lure you in
With their beauty and charm
Their surface of hope
But below there's harm

The further you look
And the deeper down
There are so many more
So many more around

The stammer is a complex thing
all of life it's been with me
an ugly monster in wait to pounce
most folk don't understand or agree

Sometimes you can speak ok
but then it strikes your tongue to block
anxiety fills you right to the top
words won't come you're in full lock

It's really like a great big iceberg
above the water that's able to speak
that's what folk see and hear
makes them think you're not a freak!

What lies down beneath the water
there the real problem doesn't surface
all the emotions and built up anxiety
what folk don't see won't show it's face

You're the one left to deal with it
causing low self esteem and frustration
at times you feel like giving up but remember
you're one of a stammering nation

(some thoughts on my lifelong experience of having a stammer)

Tip of the Iceberg

I made a small declutter vow
To get myself unstuck
That every day I’ll toss one thing
And so far, I’m in luck.

My travel guides from years ago
To places I have been
Were easy things for me to trash,
A good place to begin.

Some macramé for hanging plants,
A box of potpourri
And dinnerware with chips or cracks
Were thrown away by me.

Of course, I’m near the very tip
(The iceberg’s down below),
But every day I’ll chip away
And find one thing to throw.

For sentimental fools like me
This takes a lot of thought.
Too bad the empty space will fill
With new stuff I have bought!

Ice Breaker

doomsday glaciers melting rest upon seabed
benign blizzard temps endanger ground zero
turbulence cause a desert
warming waters near frozen lakes I shall fear
Iceland volcano displays her open wounds
magma of our Earth’s crust vomits Her vengeance
blue lagoon shimmers of red blood polar bear
global sea level rises
accelerating where there should be more ice
magic gone shows no mercy
dazzled domain of milky beauty lacks snow
sandstorms in the ice bubble
millennia of the past we inherit
minke whale
blubber made into goulash
expedition boats bulbous bow ice breakers
who will dominate Antarctica's future
consolation prize has awarded no one
my world shall go from snow white to a blue sea
sixty eight percent freshwater flows freely

I set the date
Hope I am not too late
To save some souls
From chilly fate

The year of our Lord
Dial one nine, one two
From my home-based lab
After locking in-situ

A gyro spins
A crackle, a flash
I land on the deck
With a terrible crash

Oh souls that surround me
Running here and around
Never notice my vehicle
Though designed to astound

The floor is now jaunty
My breath like fresh mist
The critical moment I fear
I have missed

Make fast to the lifeboats
Although they are few
I frantically seek out
The captain and crew

"You can double the numbers.."
I cry with a shout
It's too late for they're pushing
The final boat out

I reach for my notepad
Complete these last lines
'Crisp bright morning air
Yet the darkest of times'

A note to myself
Set my machine now to 'home'
So she whirrs and she crackles
Takes instructions, alone

My vain hope is she
Meets me in an earlier state
An inventor incumbent
To change the course of this fate

Now my destiny sealed
By dark ice of the sea
As resigned I join singing;
Nearer My God to Thee

Fast forward to now
Deep-sea divers explore
The old shipwreck is claimed
By the ocean once more

Yet a mystery beckons
Cameras peer through the grime
Uncatalogued cargo
Out of luck, out of time

Iceberg Blues

even though it is cold it is still more fun to drink in the sun and reflect on it's beauty than a grotesque frozen hue pardon any pun making light of blues rather than being bluesy it is the dead of winter time for lifting spirits like an infused skylight a crystal blue fusee to redirect you to seek many enjoyable gifts flowing along like a ship majestically blue from cliffs to dancing on resounding ocean rifts embracing colors in tune and in step with the sky too to chose beautiful thoughts rather than dark ones daughters and sons while you have the light of the sun * * - scientist find blue iceberg A blue iceberg is visible after the ice from above the water melts, causing the smooth portion of ice from below the water to overturn. The rare blue ice is formed from the compression of pure snow, which then develops into glacial ice.

The Iceberg Was There First

I wonder what it looks like from below in the icy liquid gloom
Our legs flying, invisible bicycle spinning, arms turning
Keeping only barely above the water, our ears and chins dripping
Our hearts pounding, perhaps like the creatures below, wondering if this is supper at last?

The sea is cold and numbs the pain, and slows the blood, a curdle
Hurdy gurdy roundabout dance, circles and whirlpools so many
As one by one, faces we know so well, vanish quick
As the water gets even colder, and the friends we once had, disappear.

The ship is almost gone now, I can just see the stern, tilted
Bubbles and pieces of the dance floor fight to the surface
While we, the few remaining very few, do the same, but only some with success
As shapes, dark as the water below, circle and rise and kill,
Before the water can.

Ice blocks rattled in glasses not so log ago, crystals and gin
There were various reasons for the celebration, but the end is all the same
We had eaten well, and danced even more, and better
It is now time for others to feed, on our chilling bodies and bones.

I see the ship is gone now,
And bubbles rise with fragments of flesh,
A memory lingers on in the minds of those who so frozen survive
Any wreckage is a lifeboat secure, a few more moments, an hour
As we see the sun rise on the ice block in pink gin
So white, so cold, so blue.

( Long before the Titanic was popular in print and movies, I wrote this in 1986, after reading a book about the event... )

Chubby cream grubby against white ice
Hungry somewhat clumsy polar bear heist
Hopefully loping over to an asylum of seals
Tusked beasts bound to become tasty meals

Damp nose oscillates, catch tongue anticipates
Hook claws extend, jagging his cumbersome gait
Ungainly angle rotates blundering bear ballerina
Jaws roar frustrated, mishap sadly signals dinner

Jolly bodied, barrel stocky well insulated brood
Swivel protruding chests to avoid being food
Fear pulls polar threat away, phew! - Relax
Pack pacify, raft drifts after cold cracks

Snowy blows his nose with hankie huge paws
Lucky that chubby has arms strong as oars
Iceberg dips, whiskers twitch while wishing
Imminent swim success - in frigid fishing

The Iceberg

in the chill of an iceberg, out on the sea
bright in it's gleaming
a herd of old walrus asleep in the breeze
peacefully dreaming

a company of penguins dance on her slopes
there on the ocean
slippin' and slidin' like a bar of wet soap
with a rockinghorse motion

just then a polar bear, off on a tear-
his sudden intrusion
abruptly the world of the penguins is hurled
into utter confusion

their situation increasingly grave
by the menacing stranger
taking no chances they make for the waves
escaping the danger

aseagull is circling high up above
chanting his mantra
singing as ever so higher he flies
shepherding clouds in a wide open sky
and i capture it all with a critical eye-
for i am a camera!

Iceberg Theory

I wanna start fresh
Ditch the folks who used to know me
The ones who watched me plow the fields
Of mediocrity

I want another guess
Elevate me from what’s below me
A crack at the ring, a shot at the shield
A sterling opportunity

There ain’t no way around it
When a theory is unfounded
And people believe they know you
But they can’t glimpse what’s below
They can talk but they don’t know
Yes they talk but they really don’t know

On high alert,
The captain grips the situation
While the passengers grip the railing
Faced with certain doom

Mistakes can hurt
Some courses bring annihilation
You count the lifeboats of your failing
But you don’t check if there’s room

There ain’t no way around it
When a theory is unfounded
And people believe they know you
But they can’t glimpse what’s below
They can talk but they don’t know
Yes they talk but they really don’t know

Like the hero under the scar tissue
Like the ghost behind the glory
You're struck by the frozen headline
But you don’t see the rest of the story

There ain’t no way around it
When a theory is unfounded
And people believe they know you
But they can’t glimpse what’s below
They can talk but they don’t know
Yes they talk but they really don’t know.

Iceberg

Condensed drops of stray emotions
Piece by piece build the iceberg
In years of isolated solitude
A singleton rain at 'dusk'
Bent upon breaking this ice
Open your heart
Let the lava flow
Help me melt this mount of snow
For the barrier should shed now
Pronouncing the US and WE now
@ 'dusk,....

You were the iceberg and I the Titanic
You were a sparkling gem on the water
Waiting to turn everything tragic
I flirted with you, awestruck by your charm
Little did I know my lust would do me harm
You were the iceberg and I the Titanic

You were the iceberg and I the Titanic
I was all confidence on my maiden voyage
But it soon all turned to sheer panic
You gouged a fatal wound in my heart
The pain flooded to every part
You were the iceberg and I the Titanic

You were the iceberg and I the Titanic
Unmoved, you watched my death throes
The tear in my side ghastly... horrific
You watched me sink down to the abyss
When you could’ve patched me with a kiss
You were the iceberg and I the Titanic.
