3. Please read the description below regarding writing them.

4. Make them humorous, satirical or dark.

Preparing Your Entry

Submit one copy of your poem online. Format your poem. Please make your entry easy to read — no illustrations or fancy fonts.

English Language

Here are a few guidelines on writing senryu:

  • Three lines with the five-seven-five syllable pattern
  • Subjects tend to be related to human nature (as opposed to natural nature)--so romance, ironic human behavior, various relationships
  • Often, senryu try to spark a laugh or "knowing moment"  - Writer's Digest

Poems should be in English. Poems translated from other languages are not eligible, unless you wrote both the original poem and the translation.
