Contest Description

What to Submit?

This is not a traditional haiku contest.

I have in mind my own design, named for the genus of the 13 and 17 year Periodic Cicada of Eastern North America, 13 or 17 syllables in three lines 5/3/5 or 5/7/5.

Unlike haiku, title is integral to the poem. Emotive verse crammed in to a strict form. Consider a controlled explosion; the piercing pitch of the cicada... after seventeen years in the dark, to at long last sing in the sun, for but only one, too brief a summer. Precious words chosen wisely. Affect me.

For examples see my "woe is the sea", "my religion is dying"

I wrote two in April with this form and contest in mind, "13" and "17".

I do not expect Magicicada to catch on , just having some fun, observing my own flagrant free verse tendencies whilst trying to write haiku true.

I get the impression many do not read all of the contest instructions, so, if you're still reading you get a prize! My oldest joke:

What did one eye say to the other eye?

"There's something in between us that smells."

Have Fun!
