Never would I have thought I would start writing at 73 years of age. I have thoroughly enjoyed my voyage into the written spirituality of poetry and am thankful for the opportunity.  In my seven years here I have met many new and wonderful persons. Having them accept me as a friend has been a moving experience.

How to make copyright and other symbols on the computer.

Blog Posted by Charles Henderson: 2/20/2017 1:31:00 AM

You need to carefully investigate to be sure that any work is truly free of copyright restrictions.   Even though a copyright notice is no longer required, there are still some good reasons for attaching one to your copyrighted work. It informs the public that your work is indeed protected by copyright, and the presence of this notice may be an intimidating factor that scares off some potential infringers. It also prevents another party from credibly claiming that they innocently infringed your copyright when they copied your work, thus escaping certain damages under the Copyright Act. The presence of a copyright notice also identifies the copyright owner and the date of first publication, so it makes it easier for someone to reach you and request a license Since neither registration nor a copyright notice is required for copyright to apply, you should usually assume that just about everything you see, hear, or read is copyrighted, even if there is no copyright mark anywhere on it.  Someone probably owns every photograph you see printed in a magazine or posted on the Internet. Somebody probably owns every song that you hear on the radio.  Everything posted on the Internet is probably someone’s intellectual property and should not be taken or used by you without permission. Before you use anything created by someone else in your own work, make sure you have permission in writing to do so.  Sometimes royalties must be paid. If you are in doubt about whether your use of a copyrighted work is legal, ask permission first. To create a symbol on most computer keyboards simply hold down the ‘alt’ key and press the number keys one at a time 0169.( hold alt press 0 then press 1 then 6 then 9 and then release the alt key.)  The code will then show. This is what you will see when you release the alt key. © .  Then add date and under that type your name. There are many other usefull alt codes you can find in the list.  Simply search, computer keyboard alt codes list. Or maybe just search alt code list.  This may have been discussed before but I have never seen on the soup.  If it is redundant I hope it may help some new members.  There are many more codes besides copyrite.  Some of the more usefull ones I have found are:
155 for cent - - -   0177 for + or -  251 for square root     247 for approximate   253 for squared 188 for quarter, 0189 for half, 0174 for registered, 248 for degree 0150 for em dash 0151 for en dash, 9847 for flat note, 9838 for sharp, 9939 for sharp        SYNOPSIS: : for currency, mathmatics, general typing, music, or claiming credit for, or to officially register.           Pretty boring I know unless one is interested, but is a very usefull tool if needed or desired, and is free.

at one time there was a common sense standard for plaigerism, but have not been able to fine lately. Went something 'p' defined as 20 or more consecutive letters or symbols identical to another write, constitutes plaigerisme

Thanks for the information Charles I had no idea how to make that symbol for myself. I am really grateful TPS copyright our poems as one of mine was published recently and won a newspaper contest in the USA but was submitted under someone else's name - I was able to prove it was mine and now the paper have done a little piece saying the poem was actually written by me and provided a link to the poem here on soup:-) hugs Jan xx

Regarding your poems on this site - Poetry Soup puts this symbol under our poems, so why do you repeat it above their notification, please?

Do you know if this applies to Parody? If I write a parody of a work does this amount to a copy of the original and therefore a breach of Copyright?

Thank you, Charles. I thought that might be the case but I was not sure. It's a parody I have written of 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' by Sir Noel Coward.

would not think so, Parody by it's own definition stands on it own merit and is not exact duplication. Exact duplication claimed by others is what you guard against. You just want your work recogized as "yours". You are flatterred for someone to parady unless it is ridicule. If ridicule you have opt to reply if feel need.
