Never would I have thought I would start writing at 73 years of age. I have thoroughly enjoyed my voyage into the written spirituality of poetry and am thankful for the opportunity.  In my seven years here I have met many new and wonderful persons. Having them accept me as a friend has been a moving experience.

Possum Branch Road

Blog Posted by Charles Henderson: 3/31/2014 11:22:00 PM

I haven't had much time for writing lately.  However, on the way upstate the image of an old homeplace loomed into view.  Cedar whiskers lined the ditch bank along Possum Branch road.  They were such small little fellows it seems mostly useless to call them a tree.  Some say the sand they try to grow in just has no value.  I know different.  I know the truth.  The whole acrage is under the spell.  After Mammie died the haints took over full force, me not believin in all those spells and chants. Ever since then the land just died.  It wont even grow a decent scrub oak, much less a whole full grown tree.  Being mostly swamp, the creepy crawlers infest every hole and hollow on the place.  It wont even grow decent crab grass, much less fruits and veggies.  The old house, typical of all 1820 period homes, still looks stately in its run down condition.  It was a piller of excitement during Reconstruction, and a source of pride and comfort ever since.  The old wood burning cookers were the latest and the best you could find in the south.
The family started dying off one by one.  The old cajun mammie came up with more fixins than you could shake a stick at, but nothing worked.  The last one died back in 1923.   The marker reads "Here lies the last of 300 years worth of Deveroux."  Most of the markers are now unreadable, pitted from mold and the weather.  As long as Mammie lived, folks herebouts would drive their old rattle trap cars around the place.  That's why there is that big curve in Possum Branch followng the path the cars made.  Anyways, you don't want a flat tire on that curve at night.  There is a strange blue green glow coming from the grave yard.  Some say they have even acquired passengers in their back seats when driving around this curve at night.  But I say, there is no good time for a stranger to show up in your car back seat and not have a word to say.  What is worse is, if you look into their eyes you will go blind for twenty four hours and your food tastes rotten for a week.  Its bad because you just have to eat sometime.
So, you had better stay off of Possum Branch road---even in the day time.  There are folks out there that just aren't right.
